My Trangia 27 was bought for me as an 18th present = I'm 56 this year and still use it! Ive had other stoves, some cheaper and some more expensive, but I keep going back to my Trangia. I do however use it with a gas conversion most of the time now.
Andy, you can pick up the simmer ring using the pot handle to grip the tab of metal that sticks out of the adjusting disc. But the magnet is a great solution!
great video, I personally use glue to stick the smaller magnet "into" the hole on the pot handle , so it becomes part of the pot handle. Then when I want to pick up/ put down the simmer ring, I just stick the magnetic handle portion into the burning alcohol stove and it will pick up the plate. This way the magnet will not be de-magnetized due to the heat.
Top tip: I use dental mouthwash bottles to keep my meths in, both 250ml and 500ml sizes. Advantages are, apart from them being free as you're recycling, the lids lock, they don't leak, and they're flat so don't take up a lot of space. I use a Trangia burner together inside a small Lixada-type folding twig stove, works a treat, and I have the option to use twigs, or solid fuel tablets as well as the Trangia. My cookware is pretty basic but fine for 1 person, a Dutch army GI type canteen cup with a lid purchased separately, and Dutch army mess tin. All are stainless steel. Also the Swedish foldacup like you have, and a folding cheapo stainless spork similar to the titanium cutlery you showed.
Having used a Trangia for over 30 years, I honestly don't know why trangias arent more popular than they are. So compact and work anywhere. I learnt something new today though - the magnet hack is great! I actually enjoyed watching what you put in your trangia more - that cup and folding spatula look great! Ringo
Made a diy Caldera cone out of aluminum flashing. Like the Stormin Norman stove that was made in the UK. A light burner made from the bottom of a drink can, the cone unrolled has ends that slide together. The pot from my 27 fits tightly in the cone. Very light. Saved an early spring trip when the isobutane burner wouldn’t vaporize because of the cold.
Had my trangia about twenty years now, replaced the frying pans with non stick ones, I have coffee sachets in the kettle too. A couple of ketchup sachets are hidden in there too 😁👍
Loved the video. Have been a Trangia fan for over 50yrs. For safety and efficiency, can't be beaten. I found a pot that fitted on top of one of my standard pots, drilled some holes in it and made my own steamer which is great for cooking entire meal in one go. Like you, i customisd my set but will never go for anything but the best every time - Trangia.
Nice set up! A couple of upgrades i will be adding to mine (magnet, No.7knife, Plate on top of cookset). I also use a disposal jay cloth wrapped around the bottom of the kettle to avoid scratching the pots in storage.
That magnet is a great idea, I'll be stealing that for the Scouts! I usually smear the bottom of everything in fairy liquid which helps get the soot off a lot easier. I've went for the petrol multi fuel setup, which was expensive, but a really good setup I find. You can always find a petrol station. Great video, keep them coming. cheers
I have always wanted a proper Trangia kit but only have something that I made up 30 odd years ago that is similar but not quite as good as the real thing. I couldn't afford the real thing, now I could afford it but am used to the setup I made now. I love that you like to use real cutlery, I often watch people with horrible plastic ones or sporks etc. that look so, so awkward to use. I have always used real cutlery it doesn't take up that much space.
New subscriber here from Indiana, USA. I have the 27 with the kettle and like it. I also have the 28 for solo weight saving adventures. Thank you for sharing. I'll see you on your other channel soon.
I have the Trangia 25 set and all the pieces are made in the ultralight hard anodized including the pot stand and wind base but not the kettle. It did not come that way but I added it so it all matched. I also added the the gas burner and pan stand for the smaller cook pots. I use the Keith Titanium folding utensils and I love this set up. It easily cooks for 3-4 people. 👍🏻
Thanks for this fantastic overview. Your videos helped me decide to get one of these kits. A few things I've found that work for me: I've seasoned the pan and pots, so there's zero sticking now. I was looking around for one of those sugar cube tongs but realized a simple set of disposable chop sticks work great as well. The MSR folding spatula fits inside the kit with the pot grabber. I've found nesting the towel between the bowls and wind screen reduces rattling a little better, and the extra towel material keeps the kettle snug without needing the rubber band. Looking forward to more great content!
I got a dirt cheap used 27 set with kettle to clean up during lockdown (apparently it's 30+ years old) but it was so old it needed a new burner and after I started using it I've upgraded with a billy pot, a duossal 2.0 small pot and frying pan seasoned for everlasting nonstick and so I can have acidic foods without any issues. A multi fuel burner and a snazzy HA base for the control/hose hole would be nice too
Gonna try some of your additions, good inspiration! Always nice to have a set ready to go, for those last-minute adventures... Thanks! (And when I say 'some', I basically mean the lot. Except the lighter, I like the smaller ones)
Trangia are a fantastic piece of kit and last forever. The weight and bulk aren't too bad considering you get two pans a kettle and a frying pan. Another benefit which few people mention is how quite meth burners are when compared to gas.
I had one in a shopping basket for ages until I saw your review. Really came in handy over last year and gave my partner and I an excuse to search out a bit of green in London. I upgraded to a non-stick pan after a scrambled omelette and got another set of pot grippers with some rubber stoppers but in hind sight the original grippers are fine. I was just worried they'd crimp the pots!
I bought a Trangia 27K about 30 years ago, doesn't have a hole for the gas adapter, the windshield simply rests on the base and non-stick wasn't an option, apart from that it's identical. I added the strainer lid and a non-stick pan and like you eventually gave in and bought the Trangia fuel bottle, expensive but probably worth it. The long reach lighter is a help but I tend to use the twig trick and a regular lighter. The only thing I addded was a alufoil bubble wrap pot cozy, keeps things warm while you're cooking something else. They've fallen out of favour a bit and I switched to an MSR Whisperlite soon after getting the Trangia but they do work, they're very stable and can be left to do their own thing while you attend to other tasks so speed isn't really an issue. There's nothing to break and they're a nice combined unit if a bit bulky but ideal for canoe camping. I personally don't mind sporks but hate the feel/taste of titanium and dislike folding cutlery, I prefer stainless steel regular cutlery. I like your idea of keeping the cup in the kettle although I use the larger folding cup so I'll have to see if it fits. I like your plate but personally if I carried the plate I wouldn't take the strainer but that's an individual thing. I used to use Opinel but prefer my Spyderco as it slices equally well and I'm carrying it anyway, of course if you're buying a knife specifically for food prep the Opinel is excellent value and has a trad appearance. Surprisingly I find that my recently purchased Gerber Strongarm slices extremely well, (sub 5mm slices off a raw potato) which for a thick bladed knife was unexpected, could be due to having a sabre grind.
The magnet hack for positioning the simmer cover over the burner is great. You and Simon, for example, each have the experience and the know-how to select and package equipment for each type of adventure. YOU MAKE A FINE POINT about your flatware choices, which I would generalize to apply throughout the kit selection. I never made the lightest weight my guiding principle. There is a happy balance between taking what one likes to use and what one needs, tempered by how much one can carry.
Have Trangia 27... But older without the cutting board Love it. Took my gas setup out last camp, but cooked real food, and should have taken the extra weight matching in with what I took to cook ... Learning experience
Great wee video, love the trangia set, one of my go to sets, there two bits you can also add, the Tundra lid mini which fits the pots and nests beneath them and the pan stand which nests above the kettle and below the chopping board. The MSR large stowaway pot sits on top like the fry pan perfect if you want a stew pot. Also the 27 kettle nests inside a MSR stowaway pot 775 ml and great with the trangia triangle if you want a walking set up, atb Chiefy
I still have my old red T27 kit, I bought it in I think 1984. The magnet idea is genius, I will do that too. I really like Snowpeak stuff like the folding pancake flipper and wabaki chopsticks. Snowpeak makes great stuff. I also bought a steel pot support that fits inside the windscreen so I can make coffee in a mokka pot, you can see the pot supports on ebay.
Love this gear, going to get a set for this years adventures. Those little nalgene bottles I currently use a few for a 21 year old Oban single malt. Black coffee when the Sun is up. Got a Kelly kettle for crimbo with the pots and stuff but I think I'd prefer this set. We'll see. Best wishes for 2022.
I love my Trangia! I don't have the stove but I have the kettle and some of the nesting pieces. I actually bought them because I saw you use them and thought they would be perfect for me, and they are, so thank you! I love your pieces of kit too. My favorite piece of kit is a "spice rack" that I have from GSI Outdoors. I cook a lot of Indian/Ayurvedic food so this holds 6 spices and I have two of them. I will go get some Nalgene bottles for oils for my May camping trip. I always get great tips from your gear reviews and general videos as well. Thanks!
I use this set all the time and Love it. So easy and safe. Really like your set up to. Makes packing a lot easier. Also, have you seen people cook bread in this? You should try it sometime on your channel
I added one of those little folding tin openers the ones that used to be standard in the 24 hour ration packs. I know these days most tins are ring pull but firstly not all and secondly the ring pull sometimes breaks off.
Great video Andy. I got back into Trangia during lockdown 1 and dug out my 24 year old no.25. I now have a Duossal 27 and a 28. Also three different kettles. Stay away from the Trangia Stove Facebook page. A great bunch of people but it ends up costing more money 😁 As an aside, I wonder if you could do more cooking vlogs with the Trangia? Your love of cooking, great recipes and a Trangia would make for good watching. Paul Visseker used to do some cracking ones, but sadly he hasn't been around for a while. Finally, I'm looking forward to your canoe trip with Simon 😊👍
I like the trangia 27, i use it with other things like a camping art set to. Has 2 litre casserole pan and other things like frying pan cups and plates.. Addexd a gass burnetr with it and 1.5 litere kettle not trangia has a whistle with it £2.00 from asda. And a coffee pot and gas ring reducer. Depends what i am doing. I may take it all or just bits. All works well witb this system.
Almost exactly the same setup as mine. The only real difference is I have the Black zippered carry case, a wire rack for different pots, with Titanium Plate instead of the plastic one and I use the Gerber ComplEats Utensils, which provide me with a spatula, spoon, fork, vegetable peeler, tongs and can opener, all-in-one. Check the Gerber out.
Hi Andy! Sorry I’m a bit late! Have had my 27 a couple of months now so haven’t really had time to put it through it’s paces yet. I’m thinking of ditching the kettle as it wastes fuel ( although I love seeing it boiling away on the pot stand😂👍) I boiled approximately 300ml of water in the kettle which took a little over 7 minutes then boiled the same amount in one of the pots covered with fry pan which only took a few seconds over 3 minutes! Whereas there are a multitude of ways to fire one of these up, following Trangias own guide makes life so much easier! Set up the lower windshield, put in burner and light then place pot stand on top! No more scorched hands😂 to extinguish the burner take off pot stand use simmer ring to put it out replace pot stand, in my experience the pot stand doesn’t get to hot to remove. Hope that helps. Now just waiting for my non-stick frying pan later today 🤞😂 As always thanks for all your hard work bringing us these videos, much appreciated. Kind regards from deepest Dorset 👍
If the pot stand does got too hot, you can use the pot gripper to lift it off; it has the same sized rolled edge as the pans. If you're careful, you can actually pick up the entire cooker this way, in case you have to move it when it's still hot.
"Good God man! All that weight! You'll never get that load out of your car much less the parking lot!" (That's blatant sarcasm for all the light weight backpackers that cut their shoe laces in half and tear the tags out of their underwear to cut down on weight.) I think you have a great setup and I think it would be more fun to try out in use rather than try to get by with something minimal just because of weight. Thanks for your video.
Iv had my eye on the trianga for years an for Xmas treated myself to the 27..used for 4 hours a day almost every day no joke fell in love just got the 25.. I use a roofers small tool works absolute magic for me 👍👌😏 #trowelonthetrail
I’m afraid Ive not got any life-changing revolutionary improvisations to share. I love that magnet idea though. I’ve got right into using the trangia mini thanks to one of your vids Andy and my daughter ended up getting me one for crimbo. I’ve been using a large foldacup for soups and the diddy one for hot drinks. I’ve been using the trangia mini on day hikes and even tried it with swapping out the brass burner for one of those cheap generic titanium versions to save weight (prefer the brass if I’m honest). I’ve a trangia 25 - the big one that I want to take out to do a big lunch, but still not got round to it.
Where do you find that cup? Really like the additions. For that matter, where you found all of the extras would be appreciated by some viewer. Great work.
Nice kit you have there👍 but one tip at a good kitchen knife, take a look at Victorinox 11cm tomato knife, it’s so versatile. It’s so sharp that am sure I can use it as a saw as well and it only cost around 5£. I promise you, you want be disipointet😉
You are absolutely right, they are fantastic knives. We have six in our house cutlery set as they work better than anything else no matter what the food! Bargain.
Thanks Andy a great video of my go to cook set. Will check out one of the folding mugs to go with mine, good idea! I was wondering whether your plate would fit better if it was attached to the bottom of the kit, rather than the top?
Whilst I have a trangia fuel bottle, when space is at a premium I often take 250ml nalgene bottles of fuel as they are easier to find a space to put them, particularly when taking the Trangia 28.
Opinel knives are illegal to carry on the UK due to the locking mechanism so it's advised you get a non locking knife. I use a simple Swiss army with the aluminium handle .
I like them too but if you camp in the desert is hard to find twigs, I carry my Firebox too and it accommodates the Trangia as well, best of both worlds.
It’s funny how Trangia have been around for 100 years, and still people haven’t figured out how to turn it off and not getting burned. Just pull off the top windshield and put on the lit - gosh.
Yes, I've used mine over fires. But wood fires will cover your pots in soot and tar. If you don't clean it all off before you stack them back together you will mess up the inside surface too. I bought an extra Trangia kettle so I can use it over wood fires and just leave it sooted up and wrap it in a wax canvas bag.
Over but not on. If you place it directly onto the fire you'll be looking for things to do with melted aluminium on google next. Aluminium has a relatively low melting point and some camp fires easily exceed this in the fire itself. Suspended above it though, you'll be fine
@@tonyanddeb1012 not sure how you've managed to mess up so badly but I've been using my kettle on wood and charcoal fires for years with no problem. Did you forget to put the water in first?
@@jonfisher9214 I don't put my aluminium kettle on hot coals - I put a stainless steel one on them. Just know that aluminium has a much lower melting point than steel and I have seen plenty of evidence of melted aluminium on various bushcrafting type groups I'm on.
@@tonyanddeb1012 that didn't really answer my question. But I've been using aluminium stoves since the 90's with no problem. So maybe all this evidence of melted aluminium is evidence of stupid people who don't know how to cook properly?
My Trangia 27 was bought for me as an 18th present = I'm 56 this year and still use it! Ive had other stoves, some cheaper and some more expensive, but I keep going back to my Trangia. I do however use it with a gas conversion most of the time now.
Sounds like you and I have led pretty much the same life buddy !
My Trangia 27 was purchased in 1987 so it's about 36 years old and still functionally perfect. Not quite as old as yours.
Mine was bought in 86, still use it.
Do u use gas or alcohol?
Impressive.
The magnet's a brilliant idea, thanks for passing it on.
I love the Trangia. It's the Russian Doll of camp cooks sets!
@jibrhan khan why have you said that? What’s wrong with you?
@jibrhan khan You Dip stick
😂😭😆
The magnet on the simmer ring is a genius idea!!!! Great video
I've got my Trangia stove 5 hours a go from Canada from my brother as a gift I'm well pleased for my gift .
Good idea.
Love the magnet idea. So much better than throwing it on and flipping it off.
Cmon, it builds character, specially when you miss and burn your fingers. 🤣
Having used a Trangia for over 30 years, I honestly don't know why trangias arent more popular than they are. So compact and work anywhere. I learnt something new today though - the magnet hack is great! I actually enjoyed watching what you put in your trangia more - that cup and folding spatula look great! Ringo
If you are just boiling water for Mt House type meals they are overkill but perfect if you are cooking proper meals or out in stormy weather.
Oxxnarr D'flame Yes I must admit I am tempted to buy the jetboil
Made a diy Caldera cone out of aluminum flashing. Like the Stormin Norman stove that was made in the UK. A light burner made from the bottom of a drink can, the cone unrolled has ends that slide together. The pot from my 27 fits tightly in the cone. Very light. I think you should get an opinel knife depending on your hand size I got a #9 and you can get them in carbon steel. Which is nicer than stainless. 😁
Thanks for the magnet idea! 👍👍👍
Love the magnet on the simmer ring / snuff plate 👍
I too have the trangia 27. I find your stacking method much better than the usual way. Mine is now packed the "Andy" style. Thanks
I lift the upper windshield off to light, adjust the simmer ring and extinguish.
I started using Trangia stoves in the 70's as part of my D of E days. I love them and have three different types, perhaps I should do a video.
Thanks for making and sharing this, Andy. Love the magnet tip. What a blinder, and so simple!
Yes I agree !
Nice set up! A couple of upgrades i will be adding to mine (magnet, No.7knife, Plate on top of cookset).
I also use a disposal jay cloth wrapped around the bottom of the kettle to avoid scratching the pots in storage.

brilliant idea with the magnit

Awesome lil kit, and get review Sir Andy 👊🏼😎
Nice one pal looks like you have some good little additions to your set. All the best
Very nice set up I need something similar for atv camping

Hello from the Middle Range of the Rockies.
The magnet idea is perfect, pure genius. Nice setup and great video
From South Africa like the plate and the microfiber cloth.... gonna add that to my latest 25
Ive just got my 1st one. Only because I waited for a free one to appear. I'm looking forward to some fun and games in the woods 😊
Absolutely right except when there’s a fire ban you have to use canisters only. I’m in California.
Great video 👍🏻 the large MSR deepdish plate fits exactly over the top of the 25 trangia pan. So it Is a Great Package👍🏻
Great video thank you
I had one in a shopping basket for ages until I saw your review.

Trangia also sell a preheater attachment which is great for getting it going in cold weather. I've had my Trangia for a few decades now and I love it.
Awesome!! Learning about camping gear! Thank you for sharing. I do enjoy your videos!😊😊😊
Very nice kit.

Love the magnet idea. That summer ring can be problematic.
Not the lightest or most compact, but so much fun to use. I love mine!

Trangia 2.5l billy can but you'll need the 25 series bag to put it in.
I forgot, the trangia triangle with an additional burner is a great add-on.
Hi Andy! LOVE that kit ❤️Great review👍🏼
Nice kit.
The Trangier definitely has a place in the hall of fame for brilliant design.
I used Trangia in the Sea Scouts, great kit for long bimble's and backpack camping or on the boat. Great review Andy. Hope you are well mate.
I love my Trangia! I don't have the stove but I have the kettle and some of the nesting pieces. Anodized set
Very nice indeed
I wish I had
I really like the ability to cook real food like lentils and rice
The draw back is the bulk of the set
Nice setup, my kfs kit is chopsticks and a penknife, hi from hull UK,
I use this set all the time and Love it. So easy and safe. Really like your set up to. Makes packing a lot easier. Also, have you seen people cook bread in this? You should try it sometime on your channel

@@bonpecheur4565 thanks mate - appreciate the heads up. Don't know why that didn't show on my feed. Will watch it this morning 👍
Like the magnet
Nice bit of kit am considering getting one :)
Just be aware of the two sizes and if you get non stick etc
Magnet! Brilliant
It's on my list, and yes the price was a pause. I'm going to have to bite the bullet one day and shell out. Nice one Andy.
Love my Trangia burner, but have paired it with items from Firebox for a bit more flexibility in packing size.
Magnet great idea!
Wish videos like this had amazon links or something for the stuff shown.
Wish i had that a few years back. ..
Iv had my eye on the trianga for years an for Xmas treated myself to the 27..used for 4 hours a day almost every day no joke fell in love just got the 25.. I use a roofers small tool works absolute magic for me 👍👌😏 #trowelonthetrail
Trangia fuel bottle is good but beware pressing the button in hot weather as it can squirt fuel up as well as down.
Even if you pump it beforehand? I haven’t had that experience but I’ll be more careful. Thanks for the info.
Bargain.
They even sell a folding one … it keeps that super-sharp blade out of the way
Thanks Andy a great video of my go to cook set. Will check out one of the folding mugs to go with mine, good idea!
I was wondering whether your plate would fit better if it was attached to the bottom of the kit, rather than the top?
The trangier, GB 🇬🇧 army hexi burner and the BCB army mug cooker. Great items. What more do you need?👍
I'm so glad to see some one else useing a magnet on there stove to. I think thay should have came with one.
Whilst I have a trangia fuel bottle, when space is at a premium I often take 250ml nalgene bottles of fuel as they are easier to find a space to put them, particularly when taking the Trangia 28.
STILL longing for a Titanium 27 kettle ! Even a Ti burner with a tread to upstage Evernews no threaded offering .
Opinel knives are illegal to carry on the UK due to the locking mechanism so it's advised you get a non locking knife.
I use a simple Swiss army with the aluminium handle .
@KD quick tip: the locking mechanism on opinel knives can easily be popped on and off.
Hi, great video. Where do you got that spoon and fork cover.
Thanks
Ken
Great set up Andy. I love my Trangia. I often use two in @Richardoutdoors fire trough. So versatile! Atb. Paul.
Does nobody get the big billy can that the whole set nests in? you can cook for more then two people with that, it's a brilliant bit of kit
Tip for washing. Silicone spatula is good for that. Your little bottle is evil. If you leave it in gears, detergent smell leaking out of it.
I haven’t used my Trangia in some time, I’ve become addicted to trig stoves.
I like them too but if you camp in the desert is hard to find twigs, I carry my Firebox too and it accommodates the Trangia as well, best of both worlds.
your setup but i got a steel frying pan and cut the handle off. ( used pot gripper ). Fry salt in steel pan and is almost non-stick.
Great looking kit, about how much does the whole thing wiegh when all packed up thanks and another great video
Will depend on which type of set you chose as deferent metals to chose from, also some do not come with the kettle etc , all on the trangia website 😁👍
@@andyrr30 very cool and thanks have a good 1
Is the magnet attached to the Trangia? Just curious. 👍
Thought now occurs to me about the kettle - boiling water for drinking if it’s doubtful.
It’s funny how Trangia have been around for 100 years, and still people haven’t figured out how to turn it off and not getting burned. Just pull off the top windshield and put on the lit - gosh.
Only think hi would serjest to your setup is add a gas burner and maybe the billeypot for family cooking for 4 people
Nice kit setup. can the frypan and pot be used over an open fire?
