I absolutely love my Commander Limited 4x4. Taken it into the mountain and beach dunes with absolutely no issues; especially with the offroad wheels, tires and front leveling kit.
2006 limited 4x4 Hemi here! Short story. Family drove it home 3 hrs from the lakehouse in dead of summer with a locked down cooling fan. Ran hot the whole way. They of course just kept driving Never hurt that engine. Took it in for new cooling fans, thermostat, radiator and wAter pump. I don’t think it needed all of it but It was done. No issues and she has about 120k on her today. Serving child #3
Just bought an 07 and took it hunting in the Northern Maine woods. It's not going to go where the wrangler can take you, but it is totally offroad capable. Not to mention a much better ride on pavement than the wrangler. I have to say, driving this big ole box his actually alot of fun. I hope it keeps living up to my expectations.
This is amazing, why did it fail? Good features , good options , good power , looks sexy and the interior is classy Sure it doesn't have a manual transmission and mpg aren't wow but still ._.
I'm looking to buy one, I want to get rid of my WK Grand Cherokee but one thing I want to know how has life been with it and have you figured how to remove the rear seats?
Motorweek's right that the chassis is incredibly solid and it remarkably compliant, however that's about the only good thing we can say about the Commander we used to own. It spent as much time in the shop as it did on the road. And when it was on the road, you wouldn't want to drive it unless you were on a long road trip.
Mine now has over 214,000 miles. LOVE IT, BEST CAR EVER! If I could go back in time to when the last ones rolled off the line I would buy 2 more and park them until needed. At 46 I figure that 2 would be more than enough to last me the rest of my life. Hell, the way mine runs at 10 years old 2 extra might be enough if I live to be 100.....
Shawn Denty yes! I have the 4.7 limited, lifted with bigger tires! I get about 12mpg when I do a tune up, but about a month and a half later it drops to 10mpg lol. I have 144 thousand miles on it. I’ve had to replace the transmission under warranty, the radiator, water pump and fan clutch, “all new” front and back suspension, 4 hubs/wheel bearings, and the starter(pain in the butt)! I have to tackle the leaking front main seal and two inner tie rods this spring, I don’t have a garage so I have to do it all in my driveway. The computer is a bit sketchy, every now and then I get the transmission overtemp light, I pull over shut it off and start it again and it’s gone, until I open and shut my hood, I think it shakes something loose in the computer when I shut the hood! 👍🏻👍🏻
@Explicitboss91 and we used to have an 05 grand charokee before we bought the commander, but we ended up rolling it. my entire family was in the car, and we all walked away unharmed. the newer jeeps handle fine. i will admit that the old ones were bad, but jeep fixed the handling issues. i live in the city and both were very good for every day use. i dont want to get in a fight, i just want to say that they have been the best cars i have owned in my life and i will always have a jeep
@Laurence Johnson You're forgetting that the 4.7 will go probably 300k miles more at least than a 5.7 hemi. It may have more power, but it won't last near as long. 4.7 is one of the few engines to hit 1,000,000 miles without major issues
i bought the 3.0 v6 engine, you can tell it lacks power, but its not "slow" 0-60 in 9 seconds isnt to bad for a heavy SUV, and offroad isnt as bad as you would expect either and i do a lot off it, because i live in the english country, you know it rains all day everyday here so its been through its paces, i was very suprised actually, but am pleased i made the purchase, so you will love the 3.7 i only wish they were available in right hand drive in the UK
Had to replace the engine at 90000 because with the hemi 5w20 isn't recommended it's required but a bulletin didn't come out until 2013 and the shop was using 10w30 that Dodge said would be fine. Well it wasn't, I put in a Jasper engine that had all the problems fixed plus a few upgrades that gave me 455hp and 430 ft/lbs of tourqe. It has a 100000 mile warranty and now it will absolutely set the 38 nitto mud tires ablaze. The sun roof leaks horrible and to fix it right a 3000 replacement needs to be installed. The back up sensor module goes out and in turn all other engine and body control modules malfunction. The module costs 800 and labor to install. And the million other things that go wrong but now it has power, lol. Oh yeah the new engine was 15000 installed.
Absolutely love my 2009 commander limited 4x4 things way better than any wrangler I love the passing power for the high way and the low end torque for the farm
@ethandmcwilliams the commander to me is just chrysler saying "we didnt get rid of the xj(cherokee) we just updated it and change the name to commander" cause it heavily resembles the xj.
Love my 06 commander limited with 4.7 they need to get rid of the Durango and bring it back and keep the box military look and this is coming from a Ford guy I never liked jeeps until I bought it for ohio winters but can also tow decently and go trailing
Still have my 06 limited lifted 2.25” with 144 thousand miles. It’s great for the winters in Maine! Where I am we get about 1-2 feet of snow every 1-2 weeks! My neighbors with new pickups are very jealous when I drive by and have to pull them out, because they are stuck. I have driven through 2 feet of snow without any issues! With 144 thousand miles I am starting to take it a bit easier with it! 👍🏻👍🏻
The review mentions the stutter in lateral suspension movements which was they play off as a Jeep "quirk" when in reality it was unnerving when encountering bumps in corners as the stutter would upset the suspension and exacerbate the already prodigious lean angle. Our Commander was smooth, quiet and comfortable which are the only good things to be said. Fuel economy is almost as bad as the abysmal reliability.
It’s typical for a Jeep if I’m on the highway doing 55 coasting she’ll touch 28 to 11 to 8 mpg but it vetoes how I drive if my foot is stuck in the gas it sucks on gas if I’m lite on the gas it’s not to bad considering it’s a jeep
I drive a 3.7 liter v6, very underpowered. Solid car, but aged pretty poorly, sunroof leaks, windshield leaks, coolant leaks, but the engine itself has never given me a problem in 220,000 miles.
Im looking to buy a jeep and ive been watching lots of videos im thinking of getting a commander or a grand. the only vehicle i seen able to keep up with jeep is a hummer and going threw the course the hummer did good but the jeep was able to do it at higher speeds. All of those who dis jeep, thats why the army pick what car for the troops jeep.
Our Commander's climate system/blower failed four times, the rear parking sensor's glue gets brittle and the sensors fall out if you live in the northeast. The interior door handles surround will crack over time and eventually our driver side font handle eventually fell into the door cavity for which Jeep said the entire door panel needed to be replaced. If all the lights on the dash went off you didn't worry because you know that replacing the wiring harness didn't solve the problem last time.
Our 4x4 V6's the lack of power combined with the slow and idiotic transmission (our first and second transmission behaved the same. The first transmission failed at 33k miles) made this immensely clumsy to drive and we averaged 13mpg because of how hard the engine constantly had to work. We expected the check engine light would come on every 50k miles which signified that one of the oxygen sensors needed to be replaced. It took fewer miles to burn through a set of spark plugs.
Thats something non-truck people usually don't understand. With a full size truck or SUV, the V8s usually get comparable or better real world MPGs because they don't have to work as hard. I used to drive an OBS Ford 460 for work, and in well sorted condition running premium gas for landscape duty, I could average 17 on the highway pretty easy.
@@nicholasthomas4382 You don’t need to be a truck person to understand unstressed engines can get moderately decent gas mileage. My dad’s 5.7L C4 corvette get 30+mpg on the highway with a light foot. And for not being truck people our F150 coyote sure feels like a truck. The Chrysler 3.7l had more displacement but less power than Ford or GM at the same time. And not by a little but usually a 50+hp deficit. But it wasn’t just the engine that was at a deficit to competitors. While others were using a six speed auto, Jeep was using a five speed which was maybe more suited to the 4.7l or 5.7l V8. With the five speed the 3.7L was never in it’s power band and the shifts were awful. This powertrain was disappointing in all the Chrysler products it was in at the time but it was made more apparent in the Commander. While the Commander wasn’t a body on frame truck its bloated unibody was still too much for the powertrain. The 4.7L V8 was also underpowered. Like most Chrysler products of the time the Commander was poorly built and unreliable so even if we had the Hemi it wouldn’t have redeemed the Commander.
@@jasonwilliams7665 well I guess a "car person" is a better label. I always know the difference when I ask someone "What size engine does it have?" I've made that argument about the Corvette many times. If you stay out of the throttle, just cruising or commuting, you can get 27+mpg from the C4 and newer. 6 speed transmission with OD, super small frontal area and VERY understressed engine. A C4 ZR1 will prob be my first.

The stock tires were also poor as the reviewer mentioned. Our Audi that replaced this is more capable in deep snow than the Jeep was on OEM tires. If you think these problems are uncommon, head over to jeepcommander com to prove it to yourself. The 4x4 Hemi Commander might be a capable and luxurious SUV off road, but Jeep should have been ashamed for selling the the V6 in a vehicle this heavy and the poor reliability has no excuse no matter the model.

We actually liked the interior dash and easy to use controls, and three rows of seats were all very comfortable just as the review says. Just as other Chrysler products during this time suffered from poor interior quality, we had a horrible time with the cloth seats which faded and stained over time. Very much so correct, they have a lot of problems and their quality is questionable. They have a high price tag and you're buying less than you would get in a ford explorer. Corinthian leather doesnt mean your vehicle should cost 65k. Back when they worried more about offroad the ride quality they were good
@shookwood What other reviews? The other ones that I've read found this to be a horrible car, although the best for off-road. Like this one, they don't seem to manage that it's cramped, and very plasticy.
if this was made by jeep i'd want one but unfortunately jeep is long since dead and nothing remains but the jeep badge on the front of an over priced p.o.s dodge.
Yeah, the V6 model was underpowered for this type of SUV. I definitely agree that an Audi would smoke a non-Limited V6 Commander in just about every category. This is why I don't buy American carns =\
I absolutely love my Commander Limited 4x4. Taken it into the mountain and beach dunes with absolutely no issues; especially with the offroad wheels, tires and front leveling kit.

Six thousand pounds of electrical problems.
@shookwood What other reviews? The other ones that I've read found this to be a horrible car, although the best for off-road. Like this one, they don't seem to manage that it's cramped, and very plasticy.
@johnherrera305 Thats great!
@BOOMERBMW13 and jeep cherokee is better than both of them
CANYONERO!
jeep patriot on steroids
2024
POS!!!!!
Pos
if this was made by jeep i'd want one but unfortunately jeep is long since dead and nothing remains but the jeep badge on the front of an over priced p.o.s dodge.
empty pockets I think you meant FIAT. ;-)
Then go buy some other P.O.S.
wow this thing is basiclly a glorified jeep cherokee. why couldnt they just call it that???
Yeah, the V6 model was underpowered for this type of SUV. I definitely agree that an Audi would smoke a non-Limited V6 Commander in just about every category. This is why I don't buy American carns =\
POS. I have one. typical chrysler junk. horrible engineering, build quality, gas mileage etc
mine has a blown 3.7L engine at 104k and it was well maintained
