      Elon knows how to rally fans behind a vision -- but Gwynne, besides being a great engineer, has the social skills required to convince sceptics. In my opinion, he should utilize that for both companies: let her handle the tough interviews and shareholder meetings, so he can focus on the factory floors and the tech talks.

      She was trained from an engineering background. You can't manage operations or sell anything to your customer without having a lot of technical understanding. I think even the people sweeping the floor at SpaceX (especially the factory floor) are trained engineers. You can't do anything in there with jeopardizing operations without having some understanding what's going on.

      Sad, but that is how corporate news seems to work. Tesla spends no money on advertising which is huge for these businesses. On the other hand, oil and old auto represents huge chunks of their revenues. In the early 1990s in Social Studies we talked about how companies that did not advertise on TV often faced unfair news stories... That stuff is just openly done these days and aggressively so... Gotta do some research these days to know reality. And, go walk among the people, as they say...

      Was the Moon a challenge? Yes. Did we meet it? Yes. Was it necessary, ehhhh maybe... Curiosity was sated. We stopped going. We built nothing there. We went back to LEO which is exactly what the USAF and The Soviet Air Force wanted all along.
      If we as a species NEED to go to Mars, let's have a worldwide vote on the matter. If anyone goes it will cost the Earth a great deal of resources as $$$ equal resource. Also THE WORLD should all pay for it, contribute and share in the accomplishments. I think it is quite arrogant that we in the US or Russian Republic or China declare that we are doing these things for the world, without first checking with,,, THE WORLD.

      It's not in the best interest of the super powers to ask permission from the rest of the world every time we use massive amounts of resources. US/China/Russia already use way more energy without asking. Going to mars is but a drop in the ocean given our current rates of consumption. We should really be asking permission if its okay to continue burning oil and eating steak.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 6 лет назад +1

      For Goodness Ache. Then we should ask. There is a UN. Maybe a UN resolution supporting such an effort would be as close as we get to "asking everyone". I know the UN is the national elites, but it is closer to "everyone" than asking hipsters, American industrialists and Sci Fi nerds. Heck we could have a simple pew poll just in the US/Canada/Mexico and Western Europe and you may be surprised by the lack of interest.
      I've recently been following weekly what NASA publishes about actual experiments on the ISS. It costs about $7,000,000 USD for each productive crew manhour. Now I know they're not always super busy, but in the last few weeks that is a lot of resources to: water some space plants, do a school video field trip and check their own vitals. I know they got some new experiments delivered this week. I'll keep watching, but in the last two months, I've not been impressed.

    The more news about the most important things in our species future the better. I've been astounded at how little play space gets. In 1000 years there is not a celebrity today that will be worth remembering, but the companies and ideas that helped us become interplanetary will have dates that are taught and names that are remembered. And no one will remember if they were on time or 18 months late, but that we cared enough to dream and make things happen for the species.

    This was very interesting to watch. I look forward to seeing how SpaceX and Tesla Motors continue to advance. There is an interest in colonizing Mars, but that peak of interest in the common people will likely only come when they are made aware of it being a possibility. Right now, many in my area have no idea what SpaceX is, that there is a second space race happening, or that Mars could become a colony in the next century.

      Vaughn Melson You don't have to lie when talking to your kids about SpaceX's BFR Mars-colonization architecture.
      Yes, BFR stands for "Big F---ing Rocket." But there's also a family-friendly variant of the acronym, and it's coming into wider and wider use - as evidenced by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell's remarks Thursday (Oct. 5) at the first meeting of the newly resurrected National Space Council.

      Koppakzz Unless there are extreme winds or a storm, it should be able to launch.

    • @loganhumphries4851
      @loganhumphries4851 6 лет назад

      falcon 9 is VERY long and not very wide (70m x 3.7m)almost noodle like, this makes it more susceptible to strong winds bending it, BFR on the other hand will be much fatter (106m x 9m roughly) so it will not be influenced by the same weather conditions as it is going to be stronger and less bendy.

    • @kosmique

      the answer is actually both.
      Elon used to love video games and in Doom there was a BigFuckingGun. the BFR is a reference to BFG. how much truth is behind this ? idk but its extremely easy to believe and kinda fits him if you ask me ... his favorite game was deus ex by the way..
      to the public= big falcon
      for elon and spacex = big effing

      Hmm, let's see, average temperature on Mars -70 below zero, no water, no rivers or oceans, no breathable atmosphere, no plants animals or life. 60 mph dust storms that last for weeks. Yup, sounds like a really good time.

    • @VerisimilitudeDude
      @VerisimilitudeDude 5 лет назад +1

      @Les Morgan Hmm, let's see... underground bases with advanced plastics and transparent aluminum for windows in their above ground facilities that are vacuum sealed and has their own air supply (think bio dome). It's got enough materials to create the rocket fuel back to earth. It also has tons of resources and a lot of water frozen in the ice caps. A sizeable magnetic shield positioned in the L2 part of Mars would be sufficient to deflect the solar wind and is possible with current technology. The first steps would be small, yes, but with time it could become much more sustainable and habitable to human life.

      -Yah, and ALL those materials will be delivered via chemical rockets that have a 9 to 1 fuel to payload ratio, on a 7 month, one way journey, with absolutely no profit motive for investors. Ok then....
