My Grandfather was a fire fighter and said that even if your fire alarm system is hardwired, you still have to test it. They usually have a battery backup.
That is why I think houses should come built with stuff like an Edwards EST KIDDE EG1F-HDVM Genesis horn strobe. At least they flash and are loud. (Btw no smoke alarms are located in bedrooms)
Fire drill should also be done using your actual smoke alarms set them off with with something thay thay will sound without having to hold in the button in schools that will use the actual fire alarm system it techs them the sound and what to do even more what we did set the alarm off with in the evening and then time how long it takes to get everybody at front do when upstairs if it’s under 2 minutes that’s good any longer than you should do it again
I live with my parents. I’m 21 so it’s obvious to me how to get out of there’s a fire. We don’t practice drills because we don’t feel it’s that hard to understand.

Never assume that the alarm is fake always assume that it’s real.
