I highly recommend the shortwave ebook. It was made available around the time I was really getting interested in tube radio repair and restoring and was one of my first books. Later when I purchased the other book you have on radio, it helped make more sense of what was going on. Admittedly it was a little complex to understand at first but as I learned it gave me a great reference to go to and really did help. I would also recommend to anyone interested in this hobby to buy a copy of the other book, "All American Five Radio", as it lays out the basic radio format we all enjoy. Thanks Rick. Carl
I downloaded your book today and have been reviewing it. An excellent resource with a remarkable amount of detail. Thank you for making it available to everyone. Godspeed on your future endeavors!
Thanks. I'm glad that you like my free eBook and you find it useful. It was a three year project and I tried put in as must useful information as I could. Please tell your friends about this publication. Rick
Hi Richard. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and putting in the time to teach others. I can understand how much time you must have invested into this. It is very much appreciated and it's great that others will become interested in saving some of these beautiful radios. You're keeping the spirit alive sir!!
I watch you channel every time you post new video. Although I don't know tubes I certainly "dabble" in transistor circuitry as a hobby. I downloaded your book and hope to read it soon. Thank you so much for taking time to make videos and book. Much respect , Micheal
Thanks a lot for doing this video. There's lots of good basic information that really helped me. Thanks also for the E book. There's lots of good information that applies to other radios as well. Regards, Tom
Richard, I found this video very informative and wanted to download your "ebook" The Vacuum Tube Shortwave Radio and when I connected the link I received a message that wouldn't allow me to get to the download. Is there another way to get to the download? Keep up the goodwork
Quick question: What level of sensitivity should I expect for an All American Five radio? For a GE model 400 radio that I am restoring, the signal at the antenna needs to be above about -40 dBm (3 mV RMS into 50 Ohms) in order to hear the station clearly. This seems high.
So I guess your volume and sensitivity are low. Have you tested all the tubes? I’ll be glad to help in troubleshooting your radio. I would need te voltage at each plate of each Tube. My email is allamericanfiveradio@yahoo.com make the subject GE400. The specification for the 12SA7 is below. 12SA7 frank.pocnet.net/sheets/127/1/12SA7.pdf
Appreciate the videos that you have on your channel and the sharing of your knowledge on working with these vintage radios. I am working on my first restoration of a 1955 Arvin 842T radio that my father had kept away in his storage and was wondering what gauge of antenna wire were used on these sets? I would like to try and replace it since a lot of the cloth insulation is almost gone from it. Thanks for your time.
+AllAmericanFiveRadio I JUST down loaded the eBook . It so great and ez to understand how the tubes work in the different sections of the shortwave receiver .thank you Ashley. PS I got your channel on Paul's channel from the comments.
Hi, another great tutorial. As a very green learner, I tried to download the ebook as it would be a great resource but the download wouldn't work. If its no longer downloadable, id still love to be abe to purchase it, if this is an option. Again, thankyou for all the time you put in to teaching us that are very keen to keep learning. Can you hook an oscilloscope directly to the plates on a tube radio?? I might have ask you this before, I cant remember...excellent video..I did ask you..sorry about that..but my scope say's it can handle 300 volts DC and I believe the plate voltage is around 250 volts.
I downloaded your e-book but it requires a password. I think I used to have the password but I can't remember. What can I use? Thanks for your videos. I have been watching you since around 2010 and I have enjoyed each one that I have seen.

Usually under the cloth cover the wire is insulated with lacquer, if this is the case I would just leave it alone.
As always an excellent video. Thank You!

Shouldn't the power switch be in series with the hot lead, and a polarized plug?
This was made before polarized power plugs, and other safety rules. That why I ALWAYS use an isolation transformer.
Thank you very much, just exactly what I would like to do with my new (chinese) oscilloscope. What a great video to offer the public
Thank you, and your welcome.
The link to the book is not working. Can you please provide an updated link. Thanks.
Thanks I updated the video also.

Sir. I have 60hz hum on a 5 tube acdc national nc33 even after recapping. The 60hz is all over my B+. Any idea what it could be?
I need the manufacturer and model number.

How would you define a n AA5 radio? There seems to be differing opinions on that .
