  • Leave the deserts and mesas of New Mexico for the wet and snowy high country. In this video I pass the last remaining towns in NM and break into Colorado!

    New Mexico may be my favorite state. Been through the Gila, Ghost Ranch, Silver City, Cuba, etc. Insanely beautiful! So may different climates in such a relatively small area. It's been fun reliving my 2013 memories through your trip. Already look forward to your next episode.

    Last year I was right there where you were on that auto bridge over the Chama River. (Rio Chama)... My friend has a cattle ranch further up in Galina Canyon. Ghost Ranch is where they filmed "Cowboys And Aliens"... Great movie if you haven't seen it.

      mobiltec That is Skull Bridge, part of the Ojitos Trail and CDT. The climb north on CDT from Skull Bridge is strenuous, with a climb of about 17,000 feet. There is a "gap" in the rim rock one must aim for.
      A few days ago I was an "extra" for the next season of Longmire. 60+ of us packed Pink Pony (the bar in Longmire).

      mobiltec Time stamp 5:50, that's Ojitos. There is a fresh water spring (Ojitos Spring) in the area.

      Desertphile Oh how neat! You will have to send me a clip of you in the film as an extra.

    Also found you channel a few months back and have really enjoyed your videos and tips on gear. Without getting too personal, I can't help but wonder how you're able to afford to do all these hikes (all the time off, not working a 9-5, purchasing gear, travel and supply money, etc.). You just a young dude who lives at home, goes to college, and is taking advantage of that time in your life, or do you have extra support other ways by not having to work a regular job and so on? I ask simply because I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, but it's logistically impossible for me, lol.

    Hey Joe. Thanks for the great videos. I have a request. Can you add more cowbell? Sorry, I mean can you add more footage of some of your stops in towns, hostels, and resupplies. I enjoy scenes like at Ghost Ranch from the PCT and Blueberry Patch on the AT. Best of luck to you out there.

    Joe what is the best way that ppl can support you? Buying a shirt on thruhikes? Sending food boxes? Paypal money to an account? This was a great video. Looking forward to seeing the Colorado conditions.

    Very nice! You boys be careful. Colorado has been getting some wild weather, especially in the mid-portion.

    Seems sometimes that information gets to you after conditions have already changed. I backpacked within the San Juans this summer and was told before heading out about the snow pack in the area I was backpacking. We went anyway, turned out there was no snowpack at all. Or just very little in one area. But better play it safe. Sounds like a difficult decision to make. I'd have a really hard time about changing my route. But by the looks of your recent vids sounds like you are doing great.

    Is it a myth that snakes might try to curl up with a warm body at night or are you doing something to prevent that? You seem way more comfortable with them that I'd be.

    Not sure if the trail takes you that way but if you get a chance to go to Pagosa Springs it's a cool town with nice hot springs that will sooth your aching feet and legs.

    Bodie's store is east of Ghost Ranch and a place to provision if you can arrange the hitch there and back.

    It's so amazing to watch you and the guys (and Carrot) on the trail, on here and Instagram. You do a great job of conveying what it *might* be like and it's interesting seeing the resupply box stuff as well as camp and on trail walking...
    Loved the skipping - looks like you all have loads of fun :D. Good luck through the snow!

    I must say I'm really looking forward to the next video (through the south san juans). I consider that area my second home. Especially the Conejos (three forks), Adams Fork and Treasure Creek valleys/drainages. Wave hello to Summit Peak for me as you pass by. (I hope it has cleared enough to where yall don't have to bypass this area).

    I am curious why you decided to go back to Chama after you went 60 miles forward into Colorado. Was it a designated resupply for you or is that the way the trail goes?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  9 лет назад

      It's the closest viable town from Cumbres Pass in CO. It is only about a 12 mile hitch however.

    • @leslieedmiston6587

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  8 лет назад

      After hiking for so long, you just get used to it. I always have a general idea of where I'm headed and what to look for.

    • @lynnb2562
      @lynnb2562 8 лет назад

      I don't think I could ever get used to that. I need a trail that I can see either visually or with blazes or I need a full map and compass to navigate with. I have a horrid sense of direction. I've always wondered about whether I could do the CDT because I've heard it isn't really marked. I guess that answers it for me.
