The great state of New Mexico! I was supposed to hike the Grand Enchantment Trail this spring, about 770 miles in AZ and NM, but I canceled the trip. Hoping for the fall now, can't wait to go back, especially the Gila
Another awesome video to watch! I had mentioned in another video about you capturing a different perspective of the trail. I have never seen the wood structure at 0:21. Plus the varied other scenery! 👍⛺️🏔
Me neither! I was curious what the structure was used for too. Maybe someone who knows will jump in and comment? Either way, I loved the Ghost Ranch area!
These are spectacular. Thank you for taking the time to post these, particularly the Winds. I’ve hiked there quite a bit and that high route looks rugged and beautiful. Inspiring, thank you.
I'm thru-viewing your thru hike! Gotta say, I love your taste in music, particularly the instrumental prog metal stuff. Great choice with Modern Day Babylon!!! Fits the footage and emotion perfectly. Things are starting to look really beautiful this episode. And I do think that first section in New Mexico was as awful as most people say it is. Good thing you were excited to be out there!
All those aspens probably look awesome in the fall. The main downside of thru hiking is that you can't hit spots when they're peaking, just kinda when you're scheduled to go through.
SOBOs might hit some aspens in the fall, maybe? Not really sure when they hit which sections. But I agree, thru hiking rarely places one in the right spot at the right time for peak enjoyment. Biggest thing for me is never being able to stop and enjoy most of the beautiful spots you find because you need to cover x more miles today. I was surprised at how few nice campsites I had on the CDT. Most days, I would walk by some awesome campsite halfway through the day, and be stuck with a lumpy field with no view at night. Thru hiker problems
Re: comments around 12:45 about nobo v sobo: I've hiked most of the CDT (I keep finding more alternates, and I did the PCT in the middle), and did both a NOBO start from the south and a SOBO start from the north. There are advantages to both, a big factor is what kind of snow year you face. If the San Juans have a big spring snowpack, a traditional NOBO is tough, but the same goes for Montana in those years that Glacier doesn't fully melt until August. The flip-flop has advantages -- a lot of people hike NOBO to the San Juans and then jump up to Glacier and go south.
Love re-watching these since I have to wait til 2022 to hike it! I feel like I've already planned and researched everything I could, but I can't imagine what it's like waiting for six years. Also, what are the other songs you use? I saw the one by Modern Day Babylon but couldn't find any of the other ones.
Hey that's great your going to do the CDT! Not quite 6 years but you still have some time to marinate a bit yourself. I must have watched my favorite CDT video a hundred times over those 6 years! Most of the songs I used throughout the series are royalty free tracks from envato elements and soundstripe. However, as in the case with Modern Day Babylon, I was able to contact a few artists directly and ask permission to use their music. Almost all of them said yes. Were you wanting the name of the tracks from just this video or the others too? Let me know which songs you are interested in (which video(s) and what time they start/stop in the video) and I will post them for you.
@@SeekingLost if you can manage to get all of them for the whole series that'd be great, but it's not a big deal if you can't find every single one. The ones in this episode are solid, and I love listening to instrumental music while I'm in the outdoors.
@@justin7645 Fortunately I have a list handy. The generic named tracks (like "epic strings" or "dirty rock blues") are from envato elements. Tracks from soundstripe are labeled as such. If I were doing a bounce box again, I think I would have something like a zester in the box. But when on trail, all I have is the knife, I use it... kinda scares me at times but the callouses are THICK!
I know this is in the past but I still felt adrenaline when you hit Colorado. How did the hitches go so far? Have you been getting food resupplies shipped in or shopping in the towns? Sweet ending with the callus flap!
Haha callus cutting became a town ritual for me :) I think it really helped alleviate some of the rubbing that I would get otherwise, when feet are wet mostly. Up until this point, I had only hitched once in New Mexico. That was into Silver City. Normally people would hike in to Silver City, but I was trying to catch trail days, so I hitched in when I got to HWY 90. It took about 20 minutes to get picked, so not too bad. When the lady dropped me off at the Silver City RV park, she drove away with my backpack still in the back of her truck. So I had to run down the street after her to get her to stop so I could get my pack! I was sweating that one hard!! The campground host at the Silver City RV park gave me a ride back to the spot I left off at to resume my hike to Doc Campbell's, so that was easy. As far as resupply goes, Doc Campbells, Pie Town and Ghost Ranch were places I sent a food resupply box to. I was also using walmart.com (free shipping over $35) to send some items I knew I wouldn't be able to get at local stores, even to towns that had decent grocery stores. Because it's free to ship, so why not? The box would be waiting for me at the hotel or wherever I was staying. Towards the end of the hike I stopped using walmart.com, probably more out of laziness than it not being something useful. I would totally recommend using walmart.com to supplement your food resupply strategy.
@@SeekingLost haha damn so you already had to run down the mail man earlier and then the lady with your pack. Awesome after hiking 20+ miles. Thanks for the detailed reply and the tip on Walmart and how you've been doing the food. Having one less chore while in town does sound efficient. I'll definitely look into it when I get the chance for a long trail.
I hear it's really nice through that area. That's the thing with the CDT... it's goal is to follow the Continental Divide as closely as possible, not to be as scenic as possible. It just so happens that the Continental Divide is usually pretty scenic too :)
@@SeekingLost I count my blessings that I live in a mountain state on the CDT. I love that you hike in the moment and get the most out of your experiences on the trail. Great videos and good luck in your hiking adventures wherever they may take you.
You're not missing them, I did not add dates in the video. I could/should add them to the video description at least. If there's any supplemental info you're looking for, best bet is to check out my blog... I have linked to each section in the video description. Here you will find dates, daily mileages, and more info on the section. I never meant to imply that by going nobo you miss snow. I'm just saying, to me, I can't imagine starting at Glacier... seems like you're jumping right into great scenery, tough hiking, potentially snowy conditions on day one. Not to mention ending your hike at a shitty barbed wire fence at Mexico. Nobo was more appealing to me in every way. It's funny, I saw a lot of southbounders in the trail registers who'd sign and say "sobo or go home". I always chuckled. To me, it was "nobo or nothing"!
I liked it. I had a Tarptent Moment before the Notch so I was already a tarptent fan. I don't really have any complaints about it's performance to be honest!
Those dang cows, yeah they pretty much ruin the environment & the land, but people will never stop eating meat, so the destruction continues. Its this series of videos that inspired me to hike the CDT. Really nice to watch them again and recognize every vista.
I vote this video The Best. Love the background music, the rhythm, the views. Very well done.
One thing for sure...as you/we enter Colorado I now have a new appreciation of New Mexico.

The ranchers develop the water for the cows. If there were no cows there would be no water.
