    It's so nice to receive unexpected fruit tree's, purchased earlier in the year. You've got a really great selection there. I'm looking forward to following the progress of these. 👍🏽

      Thanks, Dom! Yeah, it was good when I received a notification that they were coming as I had almost completely forgotten I even ordered them lol 😂. I'm hoping they do well next year, especially the Flavor King pluot, I really hope I don't lose that one like my last one 🤞

    What a great plant haul! I remember when you got that Flavour King last year; I was so tempted to get one - the fruit sounded so good! I didn't realise it had died. Hopefully this one will settle in well and we'll get a lovely hot Summer.

      Thanks, Dani! Yeah, I was so excited to try this variety last year. I think there could have been a few reasons the last one struggled. I think I left it in the original pot too long so it kept drying out in early spring, then when I repotted it, the mix I used seemed to hold onto too much moisture, so I think it ended up getting root rot 😢. I'm going to be much more careful with this one as it's one I've been very keen to try and grow.

    Thank goodness you got some more fruit trees, i was getting worried your garden was looking a bit empty 😂. Jokes aside i understand your reason for replacing failed plants, I've done it myself. I'm delighted with my Carmen, nice flavour fruits 👍

      Haha 😂. Well, at least I don't need to overwinter these indoors lol 😂. Yeah, I hope these ones do well this time. Yeah, I remember your tasting of the Carman mulberry, that's one of the reasons I chose this one when I was looking at which one to get 👍

      Thanks! Yeah, I'm hoping they do well next year 🤞. I don't mind if they don't flower and fruit in the first few years as long as they grow well 🤞

    An interesting selection Peter. I look forward to seeing your progress. I have fruits on my Cooltropics hybrids P. incarnata and P. Snowstar that I bought from Thompson & Morgan in July 2024 and will soon be moving the containers to my greenhouse for overwintering.

      Thanks, Mike! I got my Cooltropics around the same time from T&M, but they didn't grow much as they kept getting eaten by slugs or snails 😢. I wasn't sure if I should move them under cover for winter, I know they are extremely cold-hardy, but maybe the excess rain could be a problem for them 🤔

    Flavor King pluot is a great piece of fruit. Flavor Grenade is also an excellent variety if you're looking to add another.

      Thanks, Josh! Yeah, I occasionally find Flavor King at the supermarket (usually imported from South Africa) and it's by far my favourite plum-like fruit I've ever tried. I'm hoping this plant will prove to be more successful than the one I got last year 🤞. I haven't come across that other variety over here yet, but I will keep my eye out for it 👍

    Flavor king is tremendous!

      @PeterEntwistle  2 дня назад +1

      Yeah, it's absolutely delicious! The trees are quite hard to find over here, but sometimes the supermarket imports some of the fruits from overseas, and the taste is absolutely incredible! I don't know how well it will do here though as I think they need warmer summers than we typically get for the fruit to properly develop, but we'll see 🤞

      @ interesting. It’s common to find here and probably my favorite stone fruit. You will love it if you get a perfectly ripened one. Hope it does well in your area!

    Looks like the P. incarnata was grown from seed. In the warmth of your greenhouse it will respond almost immediately with a profusion of new leaf growth.
    I once had a P. ligularis vining all over my window. Then all of a sudden it died of root rot. I was still growing in compost or fine coco peat at the time, so that might explain it (roots not getting enough oxygen due to air displacement by water, which is problematic over the winter, when roots are not taking up much water, and so the compost or fine coir remains wet for long periods).

      No the boss at agroforestry previously told me they propagate them from root cuttings Gary. Even in the greenhouse it will die back to the ground very soon, genetically their dieback appears to be triggered both by cold and shorter hours. That's why I only bought one plant from them, they need genetic diversity to produce fruit so its definitely worth sourcing another plant from elsewhere like Peter has or indeed grow one from seed

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  2 дня назад +1

      Haha, well I never checked if it was grown from seed or from a cutting, but it looks like Brett has answered that question for me lol 😂. Yeah, this species always dies back to the ground and then should pop back up in May (hence its common name maypop). I have a few different passiflora species now, including the regular P. edulis, which I had to bring indoors. It might have survived in the greenhouse with the heater, but I wouldn't have had space in there anyway lol 😂
      I'm thinking the pluot I got last year died as a result of the compost mix I used when I repotted it. The mix was holding onto way too much moisture and the stems started dying back. The roots were none existent when I pulled it out of the pot earlier in summer.

      @PeterEntwistle valid reason!

    For some reason stone fruits (Prunus) don't really appeal to me. I don't consider them to be 'tropical enough' 😂.
    It might also having something to do with unpleasant childhood experience with plums: at my dad's allottment, there was a greengage tree laden with fruit. I picked one off and took a bite...........I recoiled in disgust at the sight of larvae, and my mouthful of plum flesh (and larvae!) was instantaneously projected onto the ground.

    • @lyonheart84
      @lyonheart84 2 дня назад +2

      Lol that sounds like a good enough reason 🤢

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  2 дня назад +1

      Haha, well 'Flavor King' is about as tropical tasting as a plum can get, well I wouldn't really compare the flavour to a plum at all. It's by far my favourite plum-like fruit I've ever had. I think it's actually a cross between a Japanese plum and an apricot, so not like a standard European plum.
      Oh wow, I can see how that experience would put you off them 😱

    How do you spell the name of that first fig?

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  3 часа назад

      Hey, the fig is 'Bourjasotte Grise', it may go by other names too, I have also seen slight variations in the spelling.
