Literally I go back to this performance over and over. The entire show is just so genuis in it's layout and incorporation of all sorts of art forms including ballet, tap, set dressing, and puppetry. This particular scene is such a testament to the ability to portray a charecter through dance.

During the 2020 world shutdown, I tried to learn the Mad Hatter's tap dance 'cause why not. For me, the hardest part was around 2:00 minutes where the Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Dormouse are circling Alice. The Mad Hatter does what I can only describe as "glissade jeté with beats" and it took me so long to figure out how to not trip over my feet.

    • @balletreign

He is a very underrated world class very superior Premier Danseur. That man is so talented and such an actor. On 2nd thought maybe Juliet was played beautifully by Francesca Hayward. Who ever was Juliet was brilliant but Steven's portrayal left such an impact on me.

Thank you for your review of this unique and loveable scene. A word of explanation….l have explained in the past, to American citizens some details of the illustrations in the book by Tenniel.. The tag in the band of the top hat, 10/6,is the price of ten shillings and six pence or half a Guinea. In the Victorian era the skilled professional classes felt that it was beneath their dignity to deal in pounds shillings and pence if they could take a profit of five percent by working in guineas.(One Guinea being equal to one pound and one shilling.) This practice continued until 1971 when the United Kingdom began to use the decimal currency and the Guinea became obsolete.

I suggest "La Sylphide" in the different choreographies. Start of a new era in ballet and the first ballet danced en pointe. Also with strong male roles.
Unfortunately the first choreography by Taglioni has not been preserved, We have only got fragmented descriptions. But Bournovilles is one of the oldest ballets which are still performed as originated. It would be interesting to compare the performances by different companies. There has been several spin-offs and newer versions on the basis of Bournonvilles choreography. That to show that ballet can be developed on previous versions and adapted for the audience of today. Creativity and not simple reproductions.
That keeps ballet from being boring and gives new expreinces to older ballet nerds who have not yet seen it all.

    • @LeeBeeDeeTree51
      @LeeBeeDeeTree51 Месяц назад +1

@@curzonproduct It's easier to pretend that towering ballet creatives like Sir Kenneth MacMillan never existed.
An excessively self-regarding American dance cabal led by New York Times dance critics and former New York City Ballet dancers had sprung up around pretending that Balanchine was not only everything, he was the ONLY thing. For many of these folks, even William Forsythe is a hack.
One of the biggest critical dust-ups to ever happen on this side of the pond, was when former Washington Post Dance critic Sarah Kaufman dared to suggest that Artistic Directors were lazily programming so much Balanchine that they were neglecting other important works.
All hell broke loose. Them's fightin' words. But here's the thing, some A D's sheepishly agreed that programming the same Balanchine works by too many companies can be just as mind-numbing as performing the same Petipa works over and over and over. Also, who wants to live in a museum?

THIS SCENE is SUCH A GOLD and it NEVER gets old! (To be fair, all of Alice in Wonderland ballet was carefully and meticulously executed - I think the more you know about the story, the more you get out of the ballet) Thank you for reviewing this scene! 😍 Also I noticed that even though everyone was doing something different, somehow there's overall correlation to make it seem still like one piece all together, which put me in an awe because that means that choreographer meticulously calculated which dance moves are located where so what may "SEEM RANDOM" could acutally mean they overall form a big harmonious structure. 😮 Thanks again for reviewing! ❤
Also if it's in your interest, would you girls try reviewing Shostakovich's "The Nose" ballet? I came across random tap dancing giant noses from youtube few years ago but never understood the context of that ballet 😂😂😂😂 It would be wonderful if you girls could review the history of this ballet and how it came to be and explain what's going on because the setting of the ballet looks so serious..until GIANT NOSES come out and tap dancing 😂😂😂😂😂

That's because the Mad Hatter IS the music. There's a video of Christopher Wheeldon working on the choreography with Stephen McCrae in which he says to Stephen "You are the music here, so it has to be crisp, precise, full of dynamics." I love this ballet and especially this scene. I can't imagine how it could be done with anyone other than Stephen McCrae playing the Mad Hatter. Who else has the versatility and virtuosity to do it?
Watching this sent me off to find video of McCrae winning the Prix de Lausanne. He did the Corsaire, then for his free form, he did such an AMAZING tap number. It brought the house down. He was just 17. Was offered a place on the Royal Ballet School on the spot. He said he went with just his one suitcase, no adult from home with him, and never went back to Australia (which is where he's from).
It would be interesting if you did "where are they now" for winners of the Prix de Lausanne, also if you showed their classical performance and their modern/jazz/whatever performance. I'd love to see how their careers went. And to do one exclusively on Stephen McCrae would be great, too.
      Thanks, ladies!

Ever since watching your ballet protagonist video, I’ve been dreaming of choreographing a ballet about Psyche and Eros someday.

I have a thing for male ballet dancers dancing together. I think there is suddenly so much energy and a shift in the room. I especially became aware of it in Mayerling, when Prince Rudolf (again brillantly performed by Mr Steven Icandoeverything McRae) dances with a group of male dancers.

    Wonderful and delightful, as always.
This isn't related, but in this comparison video, the way Marianela Nunez does this (see timestamp 4:29) is the most exquisite

Because it is? It’s one scene from a ballet that happens to have some tap dancing.

@user-ld6hp2fm3r Ballet can be fun in many different ways and if you cannot see the brilliant ballet technique of all the dancers you are not looking very hard. ALICE is a wonderful leave the biggest smile on your face ballet ever. Not all ballets have dancers wearing pointer shoes or ballet flats . As those who watch or dance we need to have flexible minds too.

Long time fan of your channel, thank you for featuring this sterling work. Just an FYI, when proclaiming BRAVO to more than one person it’s more grammatically correct to say BRAVI! Bravo = masculine, Brava = feminine, Bravi = plural. Thanks again.
