Eddie Murphy said he got to live out his dream in this movie and that was to have his 2 favorite comedians with (Richard Pryor and Red Foxx) him. At the same time he was helping Red out after his tax situation. He had Red Foxx and Dela Reese starring in a sitcom called the Royal Family that was a hit and was about to get picked up, but Red suffered a heart attack on the set and later died. That was Jasmine Giy from a Different World playing Dominique LaRue. She and Eddie briefly dated before shooting this movie, which wasn't uncommon for Eddie. He dated Robin Givens and Halle Berry before shooting Boomerang with them. You should check out Vampire In Brooklyn if you haven't already.
Those 2 cops who said RELAX BOY, they were actually in on the scam working with Sugar Ray to help steal Calhoun's money. Later at the end, those same cops were in plain clothes and Sugar Ray tells them, DON'T SPEND IT ALL IN ONE PLACE.
REST PEACEFULLY: Bennie/Redd Foxx (1922-1991), Sugar Ray/Richard Pryor (1940-2005), Vera/Della Reese (1931-2017), Jimmy/Charlie Murphy (1959-2017), Detective Phil Cantone/Danny Aiello (1933-2019), One of the men flirting with Sunshine/Rick Aiello (1955-2021), Willie/Ray Murphy, Sr. (1938-2013), One of the gamblers at the beginning of the film/Reynaldo Rey (1940-2015), Tommy Smalls/Thomas Mikal Ford (1964-2016), and Bugsy Calhoune/Michael Lerner (1941-2023)
This movie is so underrated. It’s so great! Occasionally if I have to call my husband while I’m at work and he happens to be at home I’ll say, “Hey. I ain’t ever comin’ home no more. Take it easy.” Hahaha!
That actress was JASMINE GUY who played Whitley Gilbert on A DIFFERENT WORLD. With her is TOMMY FORD from the MARTIN show, and MIGUEL A. NUNEZ who worked with Eddie Murphy again in the movie LIFE.
Classic movie...very underrated..alot of movie critics gave this bad reviews because they didn't like the idea smart well off black ppl during that time getting the best of mobsters.
This movie is black classic. It was kind of a tribute to Pryor and Redd Foxx. The reason it received mediocre reviews was because it wasn't made for white people pers'e. It's audience was common middle and working class blacks. We know there are know critics for this audience. So we accept and understand we promote ours favorites by word of mouth. A lot of great works never received critical acclaim. Edyy an the Cruisers, It's a wonderful Life, A Christmas story, House Party, Friday. These are just some examples of how critics don't often understand the taste and appetite of the common man. Every now and then 1 will get it and explain while the movie is not their cup of tea. It's really found and audience that seamed to really enjoy it. This was Red and Richard's swan song.
Glad you liked this movie I've loved harlem nights have you seen 48 hrs another 48 hrs and I like Eddie in best defense coming to America and the golden child and of course Beverly hills cop movie's trading places all great movie's
Bruv its a comedy with some of the best black comedians in the country at that time.. nothing in this movie was meant to be taken seriously 😂 Eddie Murphy created and directed it with the intent to make the black folks look and sound better than their counterparts and to outsmart them when its all said and done. Films prior to this rarely depicted black people as intelligent human beings. It was definitely an outright comedy in the black community and deemed one of the greatest comedies of all time 😂
It's a shame you said those things about Jasmine Guy. She's got an impressive career beyond A Different World and in her interviews is very down to earth & funny. Otherwise I enjoyed your review. Did you recognize Redd Foxx from Sanford and Son.
Lol wow...only commonality between MJ and Jasmine Guy was similar complexion and hair, they look nothing alike. Jasmine didn't have any cosmetic surgery. Mj was infatuated with Elizabeth Taylor and his appearance was altered to seemingly resemble her which i doubt was coincidence.
Eddie Murphy's brother CHARLIE MURPHY, and their uncle RAY MURPHY Sr were also in this movie, along with ROBIN HARRIS from HOUSE PARTY.
House Party is one of the best ever. I done the first one on here already and need to do 2-3 and Class Act

Harlem Nights was the only movie Eddie Murphy directed a year after doing COMING TO AMERICA.
Eddie came up with the idea for the sitcom "The Royal Family" after watching Della Reese and Redd Foxx act together.
Where did they get those bread slices from? They looked at least 3 inches thick. It would take 30 minutes just to eat one sandwich. Lol.
One of my favorite comedies of all time. Thanks for the review.
100% comedy. One of the funniest, star laden movies ever.

You definitely gotta give props to Redd Foxx and Della Reese. They’re also legends and icons.
