Absolutely I have said the exact same thing many times. GM should of dropped Buick or GMC and kept Pontiac being it was their performance division. GMC is just a higher trim level Chevy and Cadillac could of replaced Buick.
Not a chance They had the stage three 455 Buick and was extremely fast and guessing probably faster then any Pontiac but not sure because they was both nice brands of performance cars my opinion
I remember seeing the ad for this when they were new but I have never seen one ln real life, and I'll bet this is as close as I'll ever get. I love these GP's but every time I see one I'm reminded of the loaded '69 low milage 'little old lady' owned 400/4-speed GP that I had pass on (FOR $2,800!!!!) in the early '90's. Nice to see Mr. Vrabec again with another fantastic Pontiac! This one looks gorgeous in the Hurst livery and all of the other goodies that make this car unique, and certainly a head turner whenever it arrives on the scene. Thanks, Lou!
Yeah Lou, I'm glad John DeLorean redesigned the Grand Prix for 1969-1972. The '68 design didn't do much for me anyway. This style always was my favorite for this period in time. Great in depth video on this - Thanks Lou!

Wow….. I worked in the body shop of a large Pontiac dealership throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Loved the Grand Prix!! I noticed how meticulous the owner handled his amazing car. When he shut the trunk lid and drivers door, he very carefully put his finger on the trunk lock and door handle. And, when opening the hood, he was very careful to only touch the very edge of the hood as needed. The owner “gets it”! My compliments to the owner!
Hi Don, Happy to read this car brings back memories of when you worked at the Pontiac Dealership :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing that you like how the Owner appreciates his car, Lou
I have a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix model J. I've added the SJ badges and have a 455 engine to put in it at some point when I retire in a few years. I added factory guages, power windows, power locks, tilt wheel , power seat and power trunk release. It was green, now it's black with red pinstripes, dual exhaust and repainted Rally 2 wheels. One of the best driving and handling cars I've ever driven!
The engine was not set back, DeLorean back in the day and another exc, wanted gm to have the longest hood, they did. So the shroud on 69 thru 72 have elongated shrouds. I have the twin to that car, honeycomb, tilt, power-trunk. They are fantastic cars. Great job as always Lou. I need to get ahold of you ,do some segments on my toys. Thx again for doing the black 72 stage 1 car with Bill so I could buy it. It drives great. Too bad weather is bad tho.. cheers sir..✌
Pontiac realized shortly after its introduction that the Grand Prix was not going to be successful on a full sized platform. The decision was reached to give it its own unique platform for the 1969 model year. Bill Mitchell was very impressed with Duesenberg automobiles, especially the styling of the boattail roadsters, thus the front and rear styling you pointed out, Lou. It also influenced, actually Pontiac outright copied model designations, Model J, etc. The results were quite striking, and successfully rescued the Grand Prix, as sales more than doubled in 1969. This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare car. Thanks for capturing it.
One of my work rides when I worked building Chevrolets bought one of these new and we always hoped he'd use that as our ride-to-work. And his was a 4-speed, too.
Another example of an already fine car turning to "gold" when granted the Midas Touch of Hurst. (White Gold or Black Gold in this instance.) I recall reading that the GP hood of this era was one of the longest, or the longest, single stamped pieces in the entire auto industry. Thanks Lou, this Grand Prix rocks!
I had a great 73' white GP with the 400cu turbo 400 trans i was only the 2nd owner it was ordered brand new from the factory in Detroit ...beast car i have ever had and i out run some SS Chevells with it it had way more horses under the hood than advertised...
My 73 SJ was triple green, British Racing Green Imron paint, green interior, and green landau vinyl top, with the 455 and positrac. The lady that sold it to me said, "It will scoot!".
Lou, another gr8 Pontiac! Its interesting that [I believe] AMC was the only other car company to adopt [copy?] the wrap-around style drivers cockpit-dash for the '71-'74 Javelins. Quite similar to the Grand Prix front interior.

My first car was a 1972 SJ-455. Picked it up at a dealer in Galt Ontario in 1973 as a theft recovery. It was at the back of the lot and the dealer helped with getting it from the insurer and as it had some damage and an engine issue it was pretty cheap. However by the time I got my licence in 1974 she and new paint and the engine was rebuilt and ready to go. It was the coolest car in the lot at high school for sure. I resent years I've been thinking I should get one again, maybe one day. I do know one thing & that is while these have great style and lines ETC. They are a body mans nightmare... It's also to bad the the SSJ's never actually had a Hurst shifter - would have looked so cool with a set of Lightning Rods....

1972 is the beginning of the end of Vintage Muscle cars. Chrysler put a few big blocks but car manufactures started detuning engines to meet new Federal emission standards and pressures from the insurance industry. To replace the horsepower, some manufacturers started dressing up cars. This one here is a beauty.

Hey Lou U are the man... This is one sexy machine... The GP of this generation were the hottest muscle cars in the game... Tell me that things doesn't look like it's gonna fly or like it's hovering like a B52 or something... Did DeLorean have any influence in this design because I see hints of genius...

Super nice car. One question I had about the car was “Did it have an 8 track player and if it did, where was it located?” I have seen brochures of the ‘72 Pontiacs and they showed the player at the back of the console over the transmission hump in the rear seat. Just curious. Thanks.
Yes, if you had the center console, the 8-track was placed behind the console. If you had a bench seat, it was placed in front below the center of the dash.
A very rare and beautiful car. This was the last year before bumpers grew and the last year for this body. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this car off of the midsized Tempest/Lemans/GTO platform and NOT THE full size Catalina/Bonneville platform? It appears to have only the bare minimum speedometer and fuel gage with a clock. There are no other instruments or tachometer, which is a poor decision by Pontiac and Hurst.
Yes, the '68 GP was the last one based on their full-size chassis. The original buyer or dealer didn't ask for the gauges. Back then, most options were a la carte, and most everything was optional.
I'm pretty sure that the '71 Hurst GP was the first car to have a factory landau or half vinyl roof. The Eldorado's followed in '72; in '73, the Colonnade formal-roof coupes got them, and then they were everywhere. The black exterior is much better than the white. I had a plastic GP model in brown--so 70s. To me, these are Peak Pontiac.
Stunning car but I prefer the 73 Olds in white. Im thinking the white would be nice on the GP SJ as well. The rotating bucket seats and dule-gate shifter were a couple differences on the Oldsmobile. Maybe its due to Shelby using the blk/gold combo on the hertz Mustang abd Olds doing the white/gold combk since 68.

Little bit of work you be surprised how fast these cars can be. My uncle had one in the late 70s while in the Military and spent tons of his officer pay on it and man what a fast all black ride It actually did seem possessed by something evil especially at about 150 and screaming 😱 like a banshee. Actually scared me plenty of times
Lou, I owned a 1970 SSJ with the 455. That was the last year of the high compression and it was rated 370hp. What is this particular GP rated? It would have the lower power due to the need to run on regular gas as mandated for all GM engines. I am somewhat of a Grand Prix fan and always thought the 71 and 72 were the best style with the upright grille, etc. But the 63 is still my all time best design. Did the Hurst variants have a higher output?
Alan, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Hmmm, not sure if there was a "higher output" for the 455. Maybe a Viewer with knowledge can share. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare car. Thanks for capturing it.
Hi Cadillac Guy, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You're welcome, Lou
One of my work rides when I worked building Chevrolets bought one of these new and we always hoped he'd use that as our ride-to-work. And his was a 4-speed, too.
Hi caribman10, Sounds like a great car :-)
Beautiful car.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Another example of an already fine car turning to "gold" when granted the Midas Touch of Hurst. (White Gold or Black Gold in this instance.) I recall reading that the GP hood of this era was one of the longest, or the longest, single stamped pieces in the entire auto industry. Thanks Lou, this Grand Prix rocks!
Happy to read this one "rocks!" :-) You're welcome AMCmachine!
I like this color better than the other one.
Happy to read you prefer this car :-)
I had a great 73' white GP with the 400cu turbo 400 trans i was only the 2nd owner it was ordered brand new from the factory in Detroit ...beast car i have ever had and i out run some SS Chevells with it it had way more horses under the hood than advertised...
Hi Tim, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I really like the 1970s Pontiacs especially ones with Rally II wheels.
Happy to read you "really like the 1970's Pontiacs" :-)
My 73 SJ was triple green, British Racing Green Imron paint, green interior, and green landau vinyl top, with the 455 and positrac. The lady that sold it to me said, "It will scoot!".

Lou, another gr8 Pontiac! Its interesting that [I believe] AMC was the only other car company to adopt [copy?] the wrap-around style drivers cockpit-dash for the '71-'74 Javelins. Quite similar to the Grand Prix front interior.
Audie, Happy to read you enjoy this Pontiac. Thanks for sharing the details of the interior you notice.
Absolutely beautiful and rare GP,and in black with a 455. I wonder if any Hurst GPs had manual transmission?
Hi Duane, Happy to read you appreciate the looks of this car :-) I'm not sure about if any of them had manual transmissions. Maybe a Viewer has knowledge and can share. Fantastic car !!!!! Ihada'72 I model w/400 auto. I added the #16 cast heads.candy green w/white interior. Although I recently purchased a '74 I still find myself grieving over that car. I wrapped it around a guard rail......sad day...

Hi Bradydog, Happy to read "This one here is a beauty." :-) Lou
Nice 😊
:-)
Had a 71. Best car ever. Should of kept it.

If they brought this car back to production, it would easily resurrect the Pontiac brand...and the matching 72 style Firebird and Trans Am too...plus that 455 is the ultimate ❤
Happy to read you enjoy this car :-)
I had a Canary yellow 72 a real eye catcher .

Hi Larry, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great car" :-) I think he did. If a Viewer has knowledge, feel free to share, Lou
I’m not really a Ford guy but this T Burd is pretty! Love the color and the name Goldie

Those GP's were influenced by the Duesenbergs of the 30's

Hey Lou U are the man... This is one sexy machine... The GP of this generation were the hottest muscle cars in the game... Tell me that things doesn't look like it's gonna fly or like it's hovering like a B52 or something... Did DeLorean have any influence in this design because I see hints of genius...
Hey Adolph, Happy to read you appreciate this "sexy machine" :-) I think DeLorean did, however if a Viewer has knowledge feel free to share. Super nice car. One question I had about the car was “Did it have an 8 track player and if it did, where was it located?” I have seen brochures of the ‘72 Pontiacs and they showed the player at the back of the console over the transmission hump in the rear seat. Just curious. Thanks.
Hi Denaalb, Hmmm, I didn't see one so not sure. Lou
Yes, if you had the center console, the 8-track was placed behind the console. If you had a bench seat, it was placed in front below the center of the dash.
@@gbaber63 Thanks for the info.
Hi Bert, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hmmm, not sure about the platform, and hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share, Lou
Yes, the '68 GP was the last one based on their full-size chassis. The original buyer or dealer didn't ask for the gauges. Back then, most options were a la carte, and most everything was optional.
LC finds exceptional classics, and this is one fine example - wonder if that paint is original? . . :>/
Happy to share the car with you :-)
I'm pretty sure that the '71 Hurst GP was the first car to have a factory landau or half vinyl roof. The Eldorado's followed in '72; in '73, the Colonnade formal-roof coupes got them, and then they were everywhere. The black exterior is much better than the white. I had a plastic GP model in brown--so 70s. To me, these are Peak Pontiac.
Sorry, the '70 GP was the first Hurst.
Hi Ralph L, Happy to share this "Peak Pontiac" with you :-) Lou
Stunning car but I prefer the 73 Olds in white. Im thinking the white would be nice on the GP SJ as well. The rotating bucket seats and dule-gate shifter were a couple differences on the Oldsmobile. Maybe its due to Shelby using the blk/gold combo on the hertz Mustang abd Olds doing the white/gold combk since 68.

Little bit of work you be surprised how fast these cars can be. My uncle had one in the late 70s while in the
Military and spent tons of his officer pay on it and man what a fast all black ride It actually did seem possessed by something evil especially at about 150 and screaming 😱 like a banshee. Actually scared me plenty of times
Hi Old scool cool die cast, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Uncles car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Really surprised me when you showed the gauges and it has the idiot lights. My Dad's 72 SJ had all gauges
Hi Tony, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
MY DAD WOULDENT CO SIGN FOR ME. WOULD HAVE LOVED RIDEING TO HIGH SCHOOL IN ONE! 👍
This would be a fun car in High School....or anywhere :-)
That a black and gold Pontiac not as famous but a lot sharper than one that is can't blame him for keeping Dad's car
Hi Larry, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Super Rare this 72 is worth almost 6 figures real deal personal luruxy sports 455/ with a 400 transmission

Was that bought in Harrisburg, PA area? I knew a guy that had both a white one and a black one in the mid-seventies to early eighties. I wanted the black one, but he wasn't selling it and I didn't have the money at that time, even if he was.
Hi Jay, I'm not sure if this one came from PA area. Lou
wow!
:-)
