OMG! Seeing the land of Enroth again feels like going back to visit your primary school or something :D it's so nostalgic. So familiar and yet strange.
I've been a fan of the M&M and HoMM franchise since I was a kid of 10. It brought a big smile to my face when I just discovered there's an active community speedrunning and still playing M&M VI, my heart-favorite of the M&Ms, haha! Great work guys, love the commentary and the run!
I've loved this game since I was 10 as well. It was so hard, I'd get to level 40 and not know how to continue, haha. It wasn't so easy to find help online back then, and I got bored of all the reading.. so I kinda just skimmed it. Also, just liked playing with fighters, so no spells... haha. I didn't understand how necessary all the reading, and having spellcasters were.
Great run and commentary! Wished for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 as a kid but got Might and Magic 6 & 7 instead, was not disappointed, both games felt like a real adventure!
I've been playing this game series for almost 20 years, but it still amazes me when I see people do stuff like this. I could never figure out how to pull something like this off.
I'm curious how fast a glitchless speedrun of this game would take. I've played the game numerous times and my personal best is about 28 hours. Then again, I don't have an optimal traveling schedule or optimal dungeon route planned. This was very interesting to watch. I wasn't aware of the 1 pixel glitch. That really breaks the game, haha. Hopefully we can see M&M 7, 8 (and maybe 9?) at some point in Awesome Games Done Quick as well!
i doubt that we would ever see a 9, it wasn't a popular game and it has serious stability problems on newer pc's (i.e anything newer than win XP ) idk if there is a GOG version or not though I would like to see either of the other two however.
The following is some rough guesswork, might try it out myself in the near-future: A glitchless run's party composition would be similar, maybe go with a second Sorceror instead of the Druid (which is only done to start with Water Magic, whereas a glitchless run has to be more practical with casters). You'd also want Day of the Gods/Day of Protection for survivability, which means someone should get Light Magic at Expert and a decent skill level on top. The fastest means of money collection for the extra spells would unfortunately be to use NWC's 10K box and accumulate the gold in a bank, much like the run used to be. And, of course, grab all the horseshoes you can while doing the Loretta council quest so you hit Water Magic mastery (this run uses 5th slot glitch to get a bunch of free skill points). You might also be considering glitchless to ignore the Fly scroll and Dragonsand/NWC teleports, in which case the start is a lot more unknown to me. Ultimately it's the same thing except for needing the gold (Wind/Gate Masters can eventually be found after enough map reloads). I would recommend finding the fastest means to get enough gold for masters, doing the Loretta/Humpfrey quests, then working to get Fly/Jump/TP/LB spells with that money and using those to accumulate more gold for the rest (Merchant/Duper take far fewer profits during this step). If you're averse to using Fly to avoid chest traps, Telekinesis is the legit way to do the same thing. After the prep work, you could probably blow through a lot of the progression with Shrapmetal and extreme usage of Lloyd's Beacon to replenish spell points (and to hit up Kriegspire well for the extra max limit) using much of the route given here. Of course a few dungeons will take a lot longer like Castle Alamos (I don't think you can make that jump as a normal-sized party?), with Castle Darkmoor being far and away the most problematic for a caster-heavy party and should be done as late as possible. As for Blaster/Haste, it'd hard to imagine that as a glitch when it's so obvious to do, but Shrapmetal makes really short work of the Demon Queen regardless. If you're using Dragonsand/NWC, I bet something around 2 hours is doable if you can keep a fast pace throughout, probably more like 3-4 if you're going more leisurely (and both those estimates assuming you're properly familiarized). If not, I'd add 30-60 minutes: it shouldn't be THAT hard to pick up another 3-4k gold early on, but it might take a while to simply walk where it is.
Thank you for the massive reply :O It's really amazing to have a game this old still show up in an event like this. It's still one of my favorite games ever. That being said, I'm using more or less the same party set-up. I'm not sure if there is a 'all dungeons cleared' category as well. That would take a lot more planning, and a bit of RNG luck. Shrapmetal is so good, not even funny. I remember using it the first few times I played the game and thinking it was crap. Distance does matter :P Over time I dropped a lot of skills just so I could spend skill points on something else. Stuff like Perception, Spirit Magic and even Disarm isn't required if you know all the in's and out's of this game. A glitchless 2 hour speedrun for a game this massive is truely impressive! I'm not an official speedrunner (at all), so that seems like a goal far beyond my skills. My current goal is to beat my personal best (roughly 28 hours) and go for a sub 20. I really need to write down / memorize the travelling schedule. That can save a lot of time...
The following is some accurate inference, might try to route it out myself in the near-future: there is a segmented run of this game on speed demos archive that is what I would consider glitchless. this game is exploitable by nature but they aren't ants so meh. they take extra precautions for safety like doing the cleric upgrade quest because it's "fast". they also save and load a ton and only count the time for when they got it right, so no telling how long that route would take. most things done in the run are possible as not ants, the only exceptions are things like the castle darkmor jump and those have work arounds. pretty much every enemy can be ignored/killed with blades with no major changes to the route, there is just more risk. at one point I was working on routing an all awards speedrun where you do everything on this list imgur.com/g92PnS2 and that "clears" most of the dungeons. the only ones missed are some thieves guilds, agar's lab, and the dragon rider's place. I just got sidetracked during routing and lost my notes so I would have to start over. I also would need capnclever to actually want to run it
I feel like the trope from these old CRPGs where late in the game there's a big sci-fi twist after what had previously been a pretty standard Tolkien-esque fantasy plot needs to come back. Wizardry, Ultima, Might and Magic and other games of the era would incorporate spaceships, aliens and AI technology into the plot in a way I haven't really seen outside of those games and the Drakenguard/Neir franchise and it's just a fun idea that makes the games that bit more memorable than they would be otherwise.
The Darkmoor jump through the ceiling glitch is interesting. You use it to your advantage, but in a normal game it makes this dungeon a nightmare, because it means the Maddening Eyes that are on floors above/under you can cast Dispel Magic and remove all of your buffs continuously, and you can't do anything about it since you can't see them. By the time you're in Darkmoor in a regular game, you're used to relying on buffs to hugely increase your damage output, so it's a real pain in the ass to have your spells removed (they dispel even Wizard Eye)
God so many hours on this game, killing dragons, saving, looting until I get a double loot with a relic or artifact, saving, looting until I get another double loot artifact or relic, and so on until I was completely geared
This game looks amazing. It's like a really janky old school Elder Scrolls game and I have no idea how knowledge of its existence has just now come to my attention. Great run and commentary too.
Great run, although I didn't really have any clue what was happening. I've only casually played through the game couple of times and it was tons of fun. Will probably check a glitchless run of this sometimes. This, MMVII and MMVIII are so great games IMO.
Amazing run! I've owned this game for almost 20 years now, but have never beaten it. I've gotten pretty far, but lost my saves or got stuck, once due to hardware failure and one time there was some kind of bug that made the circus not accessible, so I couldn't find Nicolai D^:
There are multiple circuses, only one open at a time, during certain dates. You can only find Nikolai if it’s during the right dates for the right circus.
First of all, both king and queen are still alive but absent, only prince nicolai, the circus boy shows up so you can't become kings, also the creepy dude at the end is the king's brother who was turned into a statue because he's evil but for some reason likes to help the good guys(the heroes in this game, his brother in the sequel)so he would rise to power in abcense of everyone else because of heirloom instead of four random dudes even if they saved the world second, clearly even in this speedrun shows some hermit magic guy stopped winter, not the heroes third, you don't throw 60 nukes per second with a blaster, you throw small plasma bolts without splash damage, blasters+haste= ridiculous dps but not enough, you still need an entire party with blasters at high level proficiency + hour of power spell (grants all buff spells including haste and extra damage overcharged 2-5 times normal)to clear out a room with endgame enemies in less than a minute without dying ... so, yeah i've played this fcuking game a lot
You don't need to deposit the four memory crystals before getting the control cube (though you still need all four crystals to enable Melian) - one thing I like to do in causal is get the CC and the crystals before exposing Silvertongue. Tomb of VARN is always a pain in the butt but with 5th Member Glitch it's easily broken since then you don't need to get all the Kert Rats passcode scrolls. It's hypothetically possible to get the Control Cube in the first trip to Dragonsand as a result.
Cool to know this game can be even more non-linear than it already is! For the purposes of time optimization, however, the gain by taking one less trip to Dragonsand is offset greatly by backtracking due to lack of Lloyd's Beacon (and the first Dragonsand visit has to be done ASAP for both the gold and the guaranteed Wind/Gate Masters). I reckon it'd additionally be way too reset-heavy to get through Temple of VARN without any levelups (the anubis-head dudes' melee will wreck even a party at the level I'm at in the video).
additionally, we want to level up before varn and we want the experience from placing the memory crystals. if leveling up gets cut from the run then that would save a use of lyoids beacon by not placing them before.
we get naomi in dragonsand and then we have the spell town portal very quickly. lyoids beacon is a very different spell though and is necessary to place the memory crystals and clear varn quickly

One of the best games ever. Can't really appreciate it by just looking at the super glitched speed-run.
Cyan Light the whole series is amazing, though my personal favorites are 7 and 8
8:10 - It's not code, it's data and it has nothing to do with the stack. It grabs out-of-bounds array index -1 and swaps it with a valid array index.
But does it actually add erroneously and 5th member to the group ?
Also do you know how he kills his characters in the beginning ?
