  • Should you choose to do an MBA or a PhD after your engineering degree? This is a choice that I had to make so I’m just going to speak from experience.
This is part of my thesis help series where I provide helpful advice to anybody that’s interested in doing a doctorate in business administration, or those that are thinking about a PhD after an MBA.
The choice that I had to make was deciding whether to do an MBA or a PhD after my engineering degree. This was a bit decision to make, but ultimately I chose to do the PhD in Business administration.
Here are some of the factors that helped me to decide, and things that I know now.
    1. An MBA is a degree that is geared towards execution. It is focused on getting things done. A PhD is very much a competitive degree, however it is focused on the creation of ideas.
    2. The MBA salary and a PhD in Business Administration salary is similar, however the guarantees are a little bit more certain with an MBA. The return on investment is much faster with an MBA.
    3. An MBA will not allow you to do research and to continuously explore new areas. This is also a downside for the PhD because you are forced to continuously explore and push the boundaries of what you now your whole career.
    4. Talented engineers are valued in a PhD in Business Administration. They are also valued in the business world. We are always looking for people that understand how to get things done.
    5. A PhD allows you to teach students new insights. You can teach with an MBA in a community college as well.
The key distinction between an MBA or PhD after an engineering degree is really just your preference for solving for new ideas, and the kind of ideas that you will solve for. Many of the stuff that I would have done with my engineering degree, I do now in a PhD in Business Administration.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

Hi sir. Thank you for the wonderful lectures you're constantly putting out there for us. Actually I want to know which is more lucrative for an engineer who has been in the Oil and Gas Industry for 18 years: MBA or PhD? is it better to get an MBA or a PhD in the relevant engineering field?
