I've been checking my phone all day for this! I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but this is one of my favourite subjects, of late. Locksport- tut! Whilst I aspire to a Panavise and a Multipick holder, a free Stanley one is doing me just fine right now. Great information, as always- thank you😁
Haha thanks Pete - I completely agree - a basic vise will do the trick. I got mine mainly for filming purposes and because I don’t have a dedicated space for picking (one day, I dream that I might have my own little picking paradise!)
I bought a small Stanley hobby vice a year or so ago for my dremel carvings that seems to sit right between the two you mentioned, it clamps onto most work surfaces and can be adjusted to sit at whatever angle suits the user. I figured it's worth a mention, because I've only seen one other locksporter using the same and at £20 it's a lot of usefulness at a really reasonable price. I don't use it much, as ordinarily I pick padlocks in my hand, but it's proved invaluable for my euro cylinders and also holding my dremel whenever I tweak my tools (finishing picks, modifying tensioners etc). Iirc the jaws open to around 3 inches, so there are very few locks that won't fit, and I wholeheartedly agree with what you say about audible feedback, both the vice and whatever I have it clamped to amplify the vibrations from what would otherwise be unnoticeable clicks. The price was my main factor when purchasing, but I was also adamant I wouldn't buy anything that just sits on a table, it had to clamp in place solidly. It's main use at the moment is for holding knives as I polish and sharpen them, but it's also been used to make tensioners, hold targets I shoot at, been a makeshift tripod for my phone, and to keep awkwardly shaped work in place as I carve or etch (anyone want a personalised glass jar or vase? My family will soon become sick of getting them as birthday and Christmas gifts)
@@fishpicks4531 I think I average out at about one new hobby every year 🤣 Can't wait for this lockdown to be over with so I can go magnet fishing, unfortunately dragging shopping trolleys out of canals isn't classed as exercise under the current restrictions 🙃
@@robertbates3737 I have one of those too but used it for part of the Night Mission event I ran which got me into locksport in the first place - episode 9 if you haven’t seen it yet 😉
I bought a similar bench vice on Amazon for around £25.00. No maker to it but doing what I need. Didn't want to faff with a clamp on one as these suction base are much handier to just pick up and place then put away again. Can't see me needing the hand held vice you used in the near future but will certainly keep that one in mind, you never know. Nice vid again mate, always looking forward to your next. 👍
Thanks Jeff - next one should be quite interesting I think. I compare an unpolished and mirror polished pick to see if it makes a difference to performance, and also cover how to polish for newbs like me 😉
Well made video as always. What a usefull hint! I ordered this SmallRig. For 13€ I got a convenience hack for hand picking and a cam mount as well. Big thank you, Mr. Fish.
There you go - up cycling at it’s finest! I ride too btw - my last bike was a Suzuki GSX750 which was a great all round commuter. Gave it up at the start of lockdown but I hope to pick it back up again soon 😉
Cheers Andy good video. Yes getting comfortable with a vise is a good investment. For us left handed folks a vise is nice. Less strain and sore hands on long practice sessions. I like both options. Take care.
Thanks Derrick - will have to tell you my oddities with handedness some time - dad was a lefty and mum is a righty - I write with my right, eat with a knife in my left, shoot with the butt in by left shoulder and kick left footed! A right mixed up profile!
Hahaa. Same I shoot right handed. Can shoot left, but favored right for accuracy. In school the teachers superiors favored right handed, because it is a right handed world. So I got comfortable being able to use either hand.
I started off with a cheap vice ($15 USD) and then upgraded to the Panavice 397 with weighted base and really like it a lot. As far as mobile picking, I have a friend in lock sport that made me some 3d printed lock holders that work with most locks. Thanks for the video.
Just purchased a similar vise and I’m excited for it to arrive. I don’t practice much with my challenge lock because my hands cramps after a few minutes of trying to both hold it and tension it with the same hand. Can’t wait to be able to practice more.
I'm handicapped and have been using a regular table vice for 2 months. just recently got the table panavice along with the super clamp. Would love to find a way to mount it to my powerchair. Currently I have to sit at a table to pick.
Thanks for that video! Just ordered a 2 pack of the super clamps for 15 bucks and shipping. Also hit 3D lock sport for a gutting station. Will eventually get his holder and inserts as well. But for the price, the clamps are the way to go! Thanks again!! I'm new to the lock sport thing and had to have the pana vice 350. Also got a couple of the cheap one's at harbor freight which work just fine. Have raked a number of locks but am now trying to learn SPP. Just have to work on picking skills now, the nicest vice can't teach that😂.
i have the 3d locksport, with many of the inserts. i would recommend getting 1 or 2 extra sfic inserts. the sargent sfic is larger than the best sfic and due to the different sizes between the cores you would have to make minor modifications. i would have liked to known about the super clamp, will definitely have to get one of those. good info sir! cheers!!
I am glad you rate the 3D Locksport model - I think it looks well made, just a bit pricey and less portable than the Smallrig clamp 😉 I appreciate you taking the time to watch/comment as ever 🙌
Canny intresting use of a camera mount. Iv been using a cheap vice. Its beginning to fail me now. But for about a tenner and its had 6 month of hard use. (Made lever lock tensioners and stuff in there too) I cant grumble. Likeing your vice 👍. Thanks for pointing out some stuff I didnt know about Fish👍
Agreed - I guess it’s a trade off because some of the lock bodies are made from softer metals which could be damaged without the rubber. Would be interesting to compare the two.
Nice video Andy. I grabbed a Panavise 8107 for around £78 off Amazon last year, which is basically the Panavise 350, great bit of kit. Definitely going to grab one of those super clamps though.
To be fair I haven’t got much experience with cylinder locks (I have a few coming from the States as it happens) but I tend to just go with my Law Locks Short hook or Peterson’s Gem. 😉
bro i got my clamp on ebay for less than a tenner a little smaller and less well known it is fine though i picked up a trimas 007 the otherday it is great and like you said perfect for progressive pinningnice one for the advise

Interesting solution for a portable vise. I may need to pick one of those up and give it a try. Thanks Fish!

I think the vise would give a lot more amplification effect if the lock is not padded by rubber or such... that acts like a hand. Go Fish!
