- A discussion with directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin follows a screening of "Free Solo." How high would you climb to fulfill your destiny? If you are celebrated professional rock-climber Alex Honnold, the answer would be "the tallest rock-face on earth" (Yosemite’s El Capitan). That challenge in and of itself is a remarkable feat of human determination. What sets Alex apart is his obsession to do it without safety ropes. Experienced mountain-doc filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Meru) take on the dual challenge of capturing the record-breaking free climb, and capturing the peripatetic life of their subject (who lives in his van). Great interview. It's very hard to get at the essence of the whole film in 30 minutes, but that guy did it, very impressive.
Their sacred tenderness and sensitivity towards Alex is exquisitely beautiful.

Alex just says he didn’t think much about it and he didn’t even know it was a unicorn cause he passed them quickly but everyone else thought it was an incredibly fitting metaphor for Alex’s unicornness lol

jesus christ you two, grow the fuck up. Elizabeth Chai and Jimmy are both directors of this amazing film, maybe listen to what she actually have to say, she's a intelligent woman who brings this film out not only for professional climbers but people from all over the world who never even climbed before, to find that commonality and briging the gap between Honnold and the rest of us. One of the reason this film is so incredibly pure, it speaks to rest of us because the whole film making team dynamic, it goes from two different perspectives to tell the story. Who the fuck care's who put who title first, how old are you, like fucking 5??

It’s cause she is the director with more experience. Their relationship started because he asked her for help on a film. A film that wouldn’t have been half as good without chai since she was the one who convinced him to be in it in the first place. It’s wild people make these comments on these interviews when she is literally his wife.
