    The Martin PBM Mariner was an American patrol bomber flying boat of World War II. It was heavily armed for a flying boat as it had multiple gun positions at midship at the tail, nose and dorsal turrets They were mostly used for long range aerial search and rescue missions during WWII.

      My understanding was always that a "flying boat" has a fuselage designed for flotation, compared to a "float plane" with a conventional fuselage but equipped with pontoons.

    • @peterresetz1960
      @peterresetz1960 7 месяцев назад +4

      @elektro3000, you are correct with the terminology for each of aircraft.
      Some float planes have wheels mounted on the floats to taxi out of the water onto dry land, and a few types can have the float removed, and regular wheeled landing gear install.

    • @TheIndianalain
      @TheIndianalain 7 месяцев назад +7

      There's a clear distinction between a flying boat and an amphibian. The amphibian has a retractable landing gear, a flying boat doesn't. For the Mariner, only the PBM-5A version can be classified as amphibious aircraft, the rest were flying boats. Same can be said for the Catalinas, that became amphibs starting with the PBY-5A.

    • @aardque
      @aardque 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheIndianalain Sorry, you're referring to a "seaplane." Go on over the Kenmore Air or Tropic Ocean Tours and tell them you want to take a tour in a "flying boat" and they will look at you sideways for a second before replying, "right away pops." The terms "flying boat" and "all water navy" had been mutually dependant on each other, as neither makes sense alone and they should be referred to in the past tense. To this day there remain quite a few airplanes without landing gear, it's quite practical in places like the Florida Keys and Puget Sound, to the point operators have developed amazing articulated trucks to reach under and snatch them by the floats for winter hangaring. While it is likely that many are referred to as "boats," no one calls any of them that anymore.
      Martin Marlin was the very last flying boat retired in '67, the last commercial flying boat in service was the Short Solent until 1949.

PBYs were air sea rescue at first then the navy took a bunch of them , put 50cal in the side blisters , 30cal up front , added 500lb bomb under each wing. Painted them black. Night missions , 6hrs out , 6hrs back. Targets were troop transports and barges anchored near small islands in the Pacific.

      The target should try to move on a course perpendicular to the firing aircraft. The target's movement will force the gun/bomb aimer into a maximum deflection shot - the hardest kind. It also minimizes the length of a machine gun's beaten zone since the bullets will typically be "walked into" the target using splashes or fountains of dirt flying up from the surface around the target.
      The attacking aircraft pilot was trained to approach at roughly a 45 degree angle as it maximized the chances of scoring at least some hits. If the pilot tried to fly on a path parallel to the target, such as a long railroad train or a ship, they would generally miss to one side, or perhaps put nearly all their ammunition into the target.
      As far as time in the beaten zone, I don't think 10 km per hour for a sampan is going to matter, even against a flying boat moving at 150 km per hour much less a fighter-bomber moving at 450 km per hour.

    The location of the first footage is probably the lake Hamana in Shizuoka pref. where there are a lot of auto factories now such as Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda. The railway caught on camera should be the Tokaido line, which connects Tokyo and Osaka, two major cities in Japan. The line was of course a vital for Japan's wartime produciton then and as a result the U.S. attacked the facility.

      American pilots in the Normandy Invasion were literally told to shoot anything on the ground that moves. The same thing applied in Japan - Allied aircraft (especially bomber escort fighters after completing their escort duties) would strafe the hell out of literally anything that moved on the ground - trains, vehicles, ships, and even commercial shipping and fishing vessels - Allied pilots were instructed by their superiors to do this. I'm not saying it's OK, but this isn't some rogue pilot - all of them did this.

    No surprise there, the targeting of civilians have a utility of force, no one gives a shit about any Jus in bello crap. What irritates me is how anyone can be so stupid to think there are 'good guys' in a war. Every human depravity and wickedness is normal in war, and turns young people into evil monsters from which they can never come back from.
    I'd rather be trapped in a cell with a rapist than any animal who kills, especially like the gunner in this film. By any measure killing is more wicked than a the monstrous crime of rape, which is also something soldiers do... Less medals for that though, I suppose.
