Poor flying from the Spit. As soon as the first cannon burst went over the right wing, he should have pulled the tightest turn to port he'd ever done, coz the K-4 was closing fast and would overshoot.
@@augustiner3821Yes and No. I had a late relative who flew 485 combat missions over Europe in WW2. He flew Spitfire II’s, Vb’s, IX’s and XIV’s, during his RAF career, before finishing the war flying Gloster Meteor’s. After hostilities ended, he had the opportunity to fly captured ME109 G’s and K’s. and FW190’s, both the D9 version and also the A8 and A9. He found that the FW190 D9 was the best all round, of the Luftwaffe aircraft he flew, and he said that it was a close match for the Spitfire XIV. His observation was that the ME109K had a superior climb rate, but was not as manouverable. He said it was heavy, compared to the G model, when turning. He never got a chance to fly the ME262, but did sit in one. He had no doubt that the German jet , in the hands of an experienced combat pilot, would have mastered the Meteor. But the main difference was not only the aircraft, but the person flying it. An experienced pilot in an inferior plane, like a Spitfire V against an FW190, if the latter was flown by an inexperienced pilot, would usually even the odds. That was demonstrated in Vietnam , when 2nd generation MIG 17’s, flown by pilots who had been well trained in close in combat, proved very competitive against 3rd generation McDonnell Phantom’s of the USAF, flown by pilots trained to use missiles from long range.

Engagements occurred in pairs, fours or more. One on one, the Spit XIV was superior.
