    When I was a child, Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry had a series of small exhibits of gears like the ones in this video. The gears were behind glass with a crank for turning the gears extending through the glass. It was a lot of fun turning the cranks to see how the gears operated. Most of the interesting old exhibits of the museum have been replaced with fancy uninteresting, but artistic, exhibits that operate with the push of a button. The old exhibits got me interested in engineering, which became my profession. I doubt that the modern exhibits create the same degree of interest.

      I agree, it seems like a lot of the really fun and interesting displays have been dumbed down, and you learn very little from them any more.

      The Newark Museum (NJ) also had a display when I was a kid. Marvelous. I used to head straight for the display.

      @@mpetersen6 I remember my shop teacher in high school, many, many years ago, had miniature mechanical models for numerous things: 4 stroke and 2 stroke piston engines, transaxles, transmissions, etc. Nothing as complex as what you've described, but great learning tools, nonetheless, to actually put your hands on them and watch the motion.

    At 1:20 that's a Geneva Indexing Mechanism. Commonly used on older machine tools that had multiple work station on a rotating table. It allowed controlled acceleration and deceleration of the table. Actual positioning maintained by a sliding fit pin in precision bushings

      What is not shown on the animation (or not well) is that there is a smaller pin and bearing inside the driving pin which allows the driving pin to stay stationary when it is driving the Geneva Wheel. Otherwise, there would be too much wear on the Geneva Wheel and driving pin external surface.

      Yes I know there are. Did repair work on a number of machines that used Geneva Type indexing systems over the years. The worst were Bullards. Pull the bottom covers of. Laying on your back with oil dropping down. I dont know if any body really build this type of equipment any more. Easy enough to do the same thing with a motor controller now. Companies do still build indexing table machine tools. For high volume parts that you are producing for a number of years they're a more cost effective solution than CNC. Even though the slides may be equipped with ball screws and controllers. Some machine tools are even foregoing the ball screws and using linear motors built right in the ways. Saw a demonstration of some Horizontal Machining Centers at Ingersoll once. Rapid speeds of 500 or more inches a minute iirc.

      Also used in film projectors/cameras to bring each frame of the film to a halt in front of the lens. A rotating shutter would blank out the film while it was in motion, otherwise all you would get is motion blur. Was also used in some clock mechanisms -eg would give the second hand a steady forwards click into each position. Without it there would be a bit of discernible retrograde motion caused by the escapement.

      @@jeffeloso And I came across them in the old translate/rotate CAt scanners. The Geneva wheels were responsible for the rotate part of the translate/rotate mechanism.

    The gear reduction and torque of 0:22 is incredible for a single stage. The top system is a 16:1 ratio and using the spiral to create rotational torque like that is such an insane mechanical advantage so long as your system can eliminate the friction between that ridge and gear tooth

      It's because most of them would break really, really quickly, or just flat out won't work. They look cool, but they have too much margin for error.

      yeah that is something as to think about cause why are gears all round if different shapes can be used is the round gear more durable against wear over time then the other shaped gears is that why round ones are preferred?

      square gears have intermittent motion while round ones have constant motion, there are other gear combinations that get constant motion but its also easier to produce precision made circles than other shapes

    I'm not a gear person, but it seems like these gear have high friction and not much room for error, and that seems like it could be problematic the longer they're in use for.

      Sometimes you don't need a perfect gear.
      For example for an electric lock, you need to slow down the rotation of the motor and know exactly the position of the bolt.
      Durability and torque are not important, because a lock is made to be opened ten times a day.
      But the torque of the toothed wheels will keep the lock closed in a break-in attempt.
      High security locks with several bolts have very beautiful mechanisms.

      You do realise that these have only been created in the vid as renders and any manufacture will counter in tolerances, tension and spacing whenever they make geared products so the gears don't bind

      And you would be correct. A number of these gears would be..unacceptable in practice as there is a simpler solution. But like everyone else has said, they have been mainly rendered for aesthetics. :-)

    Gear systems are art, machinery, and mathematics!
    This is almost too overwhelming for me to watch because it is so beautiful. I watch it with the same fascination I did with Lego Technic gears 40 years ago.

    The Hog Rider card is unlocked from the Spell Valley (Arena 5). He is a very fast building-targeting, melee troop with moderately high hitpoints and damage. He appears just like his Clash of Clans counterpart; a man with brown eyebrows, a beard, a mohawk, and a golden body piercing in his left ear who is riding a hog. A Hog Rider card costs 4 Elixir to deploy. Strategy His fast move speed can boost forward mini tanks like an Ice Golem in a push. At the same time, he can also function as a tank for lower hitpoint troops such as Goblins as he still has a fair amount of health. Most cheap swarms complement the Hog Rider well, as they are nearly as fast as him and usually force more than one card out of the opponent’s hand. The Hog Rider struggles with swarms, as they can damage him down and defeat him quickly while obstructing his path. Barbarians in particular can fully counter him without very strict timing on the defender’s part, though be wary of spells. A Hunter can kill the Hog Rider in 2 hits if placed right on top of it. However, if you place something in front of the Hog Rider, the Hunter’s splash will damage the Hog Rider and hit the card in front of it more. The Hog Rider in conjunction with the Freeze can surprise the opponent and allow the Hog Rider to deal much more damage than anticipated, especially if the opponent’s go-to counter is a swarm, or swarms are their only effective counter to him. Skeletons and Bats will immediately be defeated by the spell, while Spear Goblins, Goblins, and Minions will be at low enough health to be defeated by a follow up Zap or Giant Snowball. However, this strategy isn’t very effective against buildings as the Hog Rider will take a while to destroy the building, giving the opponent ample time to articulate another counter. Against non-swarm troops, it can deal a lot of damage during the freeze time, but this can allow the opponent to set up a massive counterpush. For this reason, players should either only go for a Hog Rider + Freeze when they have other units backing it up from a counterattack, or if the match is about to end and they need to deal as much damage as possible. It is not a good idea to send in a Hog Rider simply to destroy a building, especially if it is the only building targeting unit available, as defeating Crown Towers becomes substantially more difficult. Spells or simply waiting out the lifetime of the building are more effective. The exception to this is an Elixir Collector placed in front of the King’s Tower. If a Hog Rider placed at the bridge, he can destroy the Collector for a positive Elixir trade, though the damage from both Princess Towers will usually mean he does not survive to deal any damage to them. However, if the opponent sends in defending troops, it can be an opportunity to gain spell damage value. In a deck with several low-cost cards, it might be worth it to simply send the Hog Rider against one building. These decks shuffle their card rotation quick enough, that they will arrive to their next Hog Rider before the next building arrives in the opponent’s card rotation. Long-ranged troops like Musketeer and Flying Machine can snipe those buildings, preserving some of the Hog Rider’s health, possibly allowing it to get some Tower damage. When there are buildings placed in the middle to counter the Hog Rider, understanding the placement of the Hog Rider and the type of building placed can help the Hog Rider to bypass certain buildings. Passive buildings such as spawners and Elixir Collector have a larger hitbox than defensive buildings; which means that if a passive building was placed 3 tiles away from the river in the middle of the opponent’s side, then it is impossible for the Hog Rider to bypass that placement as the Hog Rider will get pulled to that building. Defensive buildings have a smaller hitbox than a passive building, which means if that if a defensive building was placed three tiles away from the river in the middle of the opponent’s side, a Hog Rider placed at the very left or right side of the Arena may be able to bypass it due to its smaller hitbox. If the player has a building already placed down in the center of the arena, and the opponent tries to bypass it with a Hog Rider at the edge of the arena, they can use certain air troops to push the Hog Rider towards the building as it jumps over the river, effectively denying the bypass attempt. They must be already hovering over the correct placement, as very quick reflexes are required to correctly perform this technique. For Bats, Skeleton Dragons, and Minion Horde, they should be placed right in front of the Hog Rider as soon as it is deployed. For Minions, Skeleton Barrel, Mega Minion, Flying Machine, Electro Dragon, Baby Dragon, Inferno Dragon, Balloon, and Lava Hound, stagger the above placement one tile to the right if the Hog Rider is placed on the left side of the arena, and vice versa. They can also use ground troops to achieve the same result.

      Or it wouldn't last long because it's practically to metal surfaces grinding against eatch other. And it's not like with gears that they touch brieftly. They are contact the whole revolution. But yes, it would be interesting to see someone make real life version of that and how it really behaves.

      torque will be (T3)(T2)/T1 times initial torque T3=tooth on last gear T1=pinion tooth T2=tooth of gear connected to pinion

      @@JayFude that's the easiest part. Mostly if the tooth sustain load gear's body will definitely sustain it. Here it is.. ( sigma)=6M/(bt²) b=width of tooth t=thickness of tooth M=torque sigma=bending strength of materials. So now you can set b,t according to your demand and tooth will not have even a crack or it 👍🏻.

    The gears that are based on the surfaces of the gears sliding against each other may look nice, but I think in practice they would wear out really quickly.

    I do have a layperson's interest in gears after studying epicyclic gears as part of a robotic arm I was building. Now when I see gears I take an interest, so thanks. I've seen them while diving ship wrecks or while at old mining museums. Gears are like magic.

    2years ago, the Wellcome Foundation (outside Euston Station, London, UK, free entry, always worth a visit for inspiration) did an exhibition on play. It included a section on Froebel’s gifts. I copied them down in my notebook, recreated some and gave them to my Cub pack. It was the second most successful indoor evening and they begged for a repeat the next week. I added gears and a marble run the next week, for the most successful evening. 2 hours over time I finally threw out the last parent (!) playing with the gear set borrowed from the school Physics dept. Very satisfying. Cubs still talk of the legend of those evenings.

    When designing gears it's also good to not have any metal surfaces push at each other, but not slide while at pressure - esp. not in such a way that the contact patch is small - that will wear them down very quickly. The last couple mechanisms would wear down the cog surfaces much quicker than any conventional gear.
    If you must have sliding surfaces - they must be as large as possible, and designed such that lubrication tends to stay inside.

    Yes, in Chicago, separated by many years, the cranked high quality gear exhibits were an attraction for me. Later the attractions had to be found , hanging in stairwells. Now, with grandsons, who knows if a visit will turn them up at all? Some complicated linkages.

    You might find this in your Kitchen. Many microwaves with mechanical timer use nonlinear gearing, switching speeds at 10 minutes to allow controlling both short and long times with just one dial.

    1:03 might be useful for a rotary valve setup in an engine. A less extreme version could make the valve open fast, stay open longer and then close fast for more flow than standard rotary valves

      Look closely. When long one's pitch is in connection with other one's small pitch. Just about to disconnect, one is hitting to other. This impact doesn't look good for gear life

    In all fairness, folks, the goal of this exercise wasn't to redesign the (worm) wheel, but to practice modeling and animation in a way that might look neat. Grading on the goal, I'd give this a 10/10.

    Very cool. I can see the first one being very useful in the real world converting circular movement into linear. I see this in several industrial applications.

      @@tim..indeed When I thought about it I realized we use something similar called a Linear actuator. It uses hydraulic cylinders to provide the linear motion and the gears change it to circular.

    The most interesting one I have seen is the interuptor gear on the old ww1 planes that allowed the machine guns to shoot past the propellor blades

    The config. at 1:20 is found in mechanical speedometers. A stack of several is used for the thousand miles, hundred miles, miles & tenths.

      Work towards it to become better. You where not the only one with this problem. Look for the people that already have solved your problem. Opportunity is where luck meets preperation. Chances are low finding someone here in the comments section.

      There are multiple plug-ins for gear generation in Fusion 360. There's even one built in.

    Sadly, gears are going away.... motors that can run at any speed are here. They will still have some uses. Entertainment is one.

    This was a lot of fun watching. But as a racer, all I could do was think about the friction involved and the lubrication required. Especially the second one demonstrated. That is a LOT of friction being created with that slip gear, especially if there is any kind of load on that top gear.
