    It appears that the MODEL 12 was designed first and foremost to be used in conjunction with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The unit has 2 distinct MIDI implementations. One MIDI Implementation covers the stand-alone hardware unit only. The other MIDI Implementation covers the unit’s MIDI functionality when connected to a DAW. I wanted to share this information with anyone interested. I hope it serves useful.

    Thanks your helpful in-depth videos. Can you help me out a bit more? how do you get the Roland TR8S and an SH4D when connected to the Model 12 to sync and play together?

    I know it was geared towards a certain target audience... But, I really wished they put this on the model 16. I bought the 16 not knowing this feature was omitted🤦🏾‍♂️

    Is it possible to do additional MIDI mapping to an existing preset? In my case, I have Logic Pro and it's using the MCU protocol. I'd like to map a few additional MCU parameters. Thanks!

    Stand-alone MIDI is almost useless on this unit, sadly, unless you're restricting yourself to pieces where the time signature and/or tempo will stay unchanged for the entire duration 😢. There's no way to either define signature/tempo changes NOR sync to an external device! This demonstrates TASCAM designed this device first and foremost to be used with an external DAW, rather than as a stand-alone portastudio. Good for most of their customer base, I guess, but terrible for those of us who work exclusively OTB. As a possible workaround, I'm going to experiment with recording an FSK tape sync signal from an old hardware sequencer, and then feeding that into the sequencer by routing the sync track to an aux output, but that, of course, will bypass the built-in MIDI functionality entirely. In that regard, the Model 12 offers no advantage over the 16 for my needs or workflow, other than a somewhat lower price.

    Has anyone had the problem where the stereo inputs are not balanced equally in volume between 7/8 and 9/10?

    • @kareljanda3399

      Yes,I experienced the same issue. It might happen when gain knob is cranked towards its limit. 1.41 firmware could help as it provides
      optional digital gain boost per channel. Haven't tried it yet tho.

    Hello sir
    I am extremely new to this. Last one I had and still have the Porta 4 cassette. I want get back into.
    I'm desperately trying to decide between the model 12 or 32. Midi may or may not be important to me. Like u suggested I found midi dp24 and was ready to pull the trigger on, but thinking that only 8 simultaneous recording and I just don't think will work. Also tacam will not support version 1 anymore.
    I do want to get into Floyd style old school synths but with 1/4 I can record w/o issue. And it appears that the 12 midi is pretty limited. Tho, midi could be helpful for backing tracks live.
    Thoughts? I like the 12 but after stereo there is no tracks left. And if the midi is not needed then will go more simultaneous.

      The Model 12's MIDI implementation is actually not bad for it's price point. The key here is to discover and understand what you really need. Then you can a make more tailored decision toward what's best for you. For more on how to do this, watch my presentation "Home Studio Builds & Updates: How to Discover Exactly What You Need", on this channel. I hope this helps and thanks for watching. 👍🏿

      @Powercoat Music thank you for your reply but what I guess I'm asking is what is gonna end up being more important at the end of the day - most available channels (which I'm sure is prob the most important usually) or midi with a few lesser available channels?

    • @brianploss8372
      @brianploss8372 Год назад

      @Powercoat Music ok please answer this as didn't the other knowing ur busy.
      I would like midi but don't know when or if even will eventually use.
      But what is more important is number of tracks I can record and/or get to a DAW if needed which assuming is yes. I'm planning on using reaper.
      Now the 2 questions. 1) If I start a recording say on a midel 12 or 24 AM I LIMITED to same number of tracks once imported into DAW? And 2) can I connect a 12 to a 24 understanding I can't control the extra tracks on the 12, BUT us as import to DAW & use midi for time control for other devices?

    • @PowercoatMusic
      @PowercoatMusic  Год назад

      @@brianploss8372 To answer your 1st question, once you export your tracks from any hardware multitrack recorder and import them into a DAW software system, you are now only limited to the number of tracks available with that DAW. If I’m understating the 2nd question, the answer is “Yes”. Wishing you all the best.

    So can you go to for instance bar 17? I only see a time, not bars and beats on the display? It would be nice to record bar 1-16, then pause and record bar 17-32. But you would be able to actually go to bar 17 and do a count in and then it start recording and sending clock to your midi devices.

    hello, I ask you for information: I have 2 external effects, each has the classic line in and out (double jack for both input and output), how can I integrate it into the mixer? how many AUX are there in the Tascam? and SEND / RETURN? On the other hand, can the internal effects be managed independently?
    For the rest, I need at least 12 free channels, including a voice channel.
    Many thanks!

    • @PowercoatMusic
      @PowercoatMusic  2 года назад +1

      If I'm understanding your question correctly, yes the internal effects can be managed independently of external effects that you connect to the unit. MODEL 12 has 2 AUX sends (AUX 1/AUX 2), so you should be good to go. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

    I am using ableton and want to use the tascam model 12 only as a midi controller.
    Can the knobs be assigned/mapped to whatever value you want?
    just like you would be able to do on a standard midi controller?
