I bought a 71 sw433, how do i adjust the belt, I might be blind but i dont see where i can do it. Or is it so old it uses some other method of doing it? Hope you can help me.
I have a question. I bought a 2007 mxz 600 renegade takes off great but when letting off the gas it does like a engine braking type of thing that’s ridiculous.. could that be a clutch issue?
@@MyOldSled I checked that and they are fine. You can wiggle them when the brake is off. I even drained all the old fluid out cause the previous owner didn’t do that it was brown. I lifted the rear and turned the secondary to see is there is a lot of resistance but that seemed fine as well. Starting to think something is up with one of the clutches. 🤷♂️
I came across your videos randomly and now I'm hooked. Been riding 20 years and it's nice to see someone explaining how do this stuff the right way. Keep em coming!!!
It's a shame you only get 4k views on videos like this. You explain things in much better detail than the "how to" videos put out by others. Great job and wishing you much success!
A buddy of mine when his belt blew, It was also an Ultimax ! It blew so hard it punched a hole right through the panel near the footwell and smacked his foot ! 4 of his toes got broken and it shattered the bone in his foot ! He was on crutches for nearly a month or so ! Now when I get heavy on the gas I think about him and I always back my foot out of the footwell ! =)
The newer belts for higher HP sleds are very very hard compared to the rubber type belts of old. Also there is 3 different Ultimax lines depending on your sleds HP. Match up the right one.
I love my 1997 mach z 809 Triple I keep her running like a Top I also started watching your videos 3 years back when I got into sledding? I find it's a passion for me I do my own maintenance to my sleds thank you for once again making awesome videos
Super helpful I’m getting into doing more on my own with these old sleds instead of sending it out for service each time I need something and these videos are a wonderful tool. Thank you for the content.
Hi David. Sorry for the delayed response. You can definitely save a few bucks, and I'm finding it fun to tinker., especially in winter when I have the time. I'm not above sending it to the shop if there's something too tough to tackle.
Very informative video! Appreciate your time and effort on showing how to change yours. Never hurts to have a brush up on how and what to look for. Thanks!
I am new to the sport, enjoy tinkering and so glad I found your channel!!! I think you have the heart of a teacher and you seem very genuine!! Thank you for the wonderful content!
Late to this party (channel)!! Great video. I’m not the most mechanically inclined person, but this was very understandable! Will check out the current deflection and condition of my belt and clean my sheaves when I finally get out to the cottage this winter. There is a mild knocking sound from the front end on my 2009 Polaris FST IQ Touring when driving at low speed. Disappears at higher speed (or maybe gets drowned out by the engine noise). Not sure if it is related to the belt though. No such noise when I run the machine with the track jacked up off the ground. Will check the belt anyway. Great, helpful video! Subscribed!!
Excellent video. Great explanation. Now I understand why I have to rev a ways before it lunges forward... my belt is waaaaay to loose... my belt deflection was horrible. Thank you for Sharing! 👊😎
This was great! I am just getting into snowmobiling this year and while I'm mechanically inclined sleds are pretty new to me so this was a great primer on the drive system and adjustments.
I’ve officially just watched every single uploaded video by you! hey Dave I watch a lot of video on youtube, must say very I don't comment much on them but you have the best videos on here then most guys lot of info about everything!!great work!!!!!
THIS VIDEO CAME IN CLUTCH!!!! I was riding on the other side of the lake and the belt exploded and seemingly disintegrated. I had no idea how to fix a snowmobile at all and this video saved me!
Morning David! That was a super, super helpful episode. Learned a few things I never knew after all these years. Which of course, now begs a question. (1) I always thought that the belt could only go on one way - the way the arrow pointed (the one printed on the belt). So not true? I wasn't aware that there was a need to adjust the width of the secondary. Always just simply put the new belt on and unscrewed the tool and away I go. I didn't realize I needed to check to make sure the belt was sitting at a specific height relative to the secondary clutch plate. Didn't know there was a need to break-in the new belt. Thanks kindly - great episode!! Thanks again for your attention to detail! Cheers!
Also Gord, if your secondary has never been adjusted, the belt height in the secondary may be right. You can adjust it in as your belt wears and get more life. Of course always check for your particular sled
A couple of other key points to ensure long belt life: make sure the clutch offset and the clutch parallelism are both set to spec. My apologies if you are covering this in your clutch video.
Alright so I have a 2003 skidoo rotax ho and when it’s at 6000 rpm it makes a pshhhh sound and anywhere past that it goes away. There isn’t any power loss but I just want to know what the kind is just in case.
About that hour glass thing, I had that happen to me. Thought the chain tensioner had come off or something, the noise at low speeds was horrible. I guess the change in belt thickness makes the driven clutch vary a lot in speed, and thus the slack in the chaincase and drivetrain makes horrible noises. Changed the belt, and everything was fine again. Definitely do not try to rip the track off frozen ground using just the engine, you'll probably ruin your drivebelt. Try to lift the skis and track off the ground by hand first.
I go through a belt every other year. About every 5000km. But it's a commute vehicle so I mostly drive like a grandma. I use the OEM belt from Yamaha cause it's the cheapest.
I needed some help, and your help was great. I have an arcticat 440 panther. It has electric start, but battery kept draining. Would that be the starter. Can't get new one for 800.o0. Would you suggest a starter aftermarket for 185.00 do you think that should cure it p.s. got machine for free friend passed and family gave to me. But has not been run in 3 years . also. has electric start. Robert Nichols
So I have a 1999 mxz600 I changed the belt on it ran it afterwards with no problem for 5 mins then parked it, I went to ride two days later and now the sled wont move. When I hit the throttle it bogs down but doesn't move, do you know what I could of done wrong?
I have an 03 yamaha viper 700. last week I managed to go through some ice in a deep puddle. It wasn't a safety issue, but I was stuck, thankfully close to home. It was deep enough in water where the belt was getting wet. As you might suspect, the belt did not have enough friction to get the sled out. I wore into the sides of the belt as i was getting pulled out. I rode it home with a bumpy belt. I parked it in front of the cabin on the lake and I man-handled the belt off. I managed to force the new belt on and I went for a ride without thinking about it. How wrong was this? Do I need to go back and adjust anything? Any comments/advise would be greatly appreciated!!
Well, you should have broken it in, but if your over 20 miles, too late now. A lot of guys dont and then wonder why they blow belts. Check where its sitting in the clutch. Glad your adventure ended ok. Sounds like it still put a damper on your ride.
My Old Sled thanks for the reply! Yea I did a 50 mile trip which was cut short by a lack of snow. I had to pack the rads with snow every few minutes. If I have any issues I’ll buy myself a good belt and break it in nicely. Have a nice night!
Hi David, I have the same snowmobile although a renegade. The last 2 years I have been having issues every time a installed a new belt I’d set the ajuster towards the 0 and my belt would always be to high and too tight. Last week end I removed the 3 bolts from the ajuster to find out that the bolts appeared to have been cut. Got 3 news ones, which were a few mm longer. Now I have some play and can adjust my deflection properly. I guess my question is have you ever seen someone cutting those bolts to possibly use a belt that wasn’t made for the snowmobile.
Hi Kovalev, No, I'm sorry I can't say I have. Feels good when you figure out a weird problem like that though doesn't it!? I had a weird issue with a fuse that was a one in a million shot I'd find. Glad you sorted it out. Thats an expensive issue. Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your experience.
Any plans on doing a video on the brakes for this sled? I've never done sled brakes trying to find all the info I can because I've heard they're a common issue
Hi Naved. Thanks for the suggestion. Yes brakes should be maintained and inspected routinely, and brake fluid should be changed routinely. Next time I do it I’ll put something together.
I agree , it’s weird , I always ran ngk plugs in my two strokes and 4 strokes , Yamaha , Polaris , all brands , got a iq 600 cfi and the plugs that came in the sled originally are champions although the dealer suggests the ngk replacement, I can tell for certain that the champion plugs that were origaninally in the sled from factory , after changing back , they’re definitely hotter plugs and run a bit hotter in my opinion, more throttle response from low to mid for me .... and yes way less plugs fouled.
Hey I need some help on my sled, it’s a ski doo touring sle 96. It’s been sitting for 5 years and I can start it but it won’t move when I give it gas, the clutch won’t move in to make the belt move, do I have to take of the clutch and replace it or clean it?
David, Love your channel. I am thinking of getting into sledding, and am considering purchasing an 08 MXZ XRS. Naturally - due to internet overload - reliability concerns abound. In short, how many kms can one expect a well maintained sled like this be expected to last (currently 12,500 on the odometer)? How often is a crank rebuilt (top end rebuild was done 2.5K kms ago)? What is the mileage on your '05? TIA.
what does it mean if the belt squeels at idle and moves forward at idle on its own? I assume it needs adjustment on the secondary or a new belt? Any advice would be much appreciated!
Great video very informative! One thing that was wrong is how you set belt deflection, the best way to set it as instructed by aftermarket clutch kit manufacturers is to tighten the secondary sheaves until you can move the track with one finger at idle. The idea that you should set it so the bottom of the "teeth" is level with the secondary is a myth.
Hi MrMtcaleb. Thanks for the comment but belt deflection and belt height are both important and referenced in Skidoo shop manuals. In the 2005 service manual, this information is found on page 318, with a photograph, under Drive system and for all models. "Top of drive belt cord should be flush with driven pulley edge." - as I reference in my video. Maybe let BRP know that it's a myth? ;) While I believe that an aftermarket product may have provided different instructions, I always use the procedures provided by the sled manufacturer. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Belts usually have arrows pointing what way it goes. You are supposed to put it a certain way so if ever the belt blows it doesn’t wrap around the back of your primary clutch where it could damage your crank seal and drain all the isoflex grease out of the bearings
Hi Sebastian, just a follow up, I also spoke with Dayco tech support another manufacturer of drive belts, and confirmed this. I generally do a week or two of research when putting together a video like this. But always follow the manufacturers recommendation
Hey , I’m looking to throw a bigger 1.75inch backcountry track on my 121 iq 600, I know she’ll have the power to move the track but the stock clutching /gearing makes it a rocket ship at past half throttle and a dead dog below quarter throttle or 1-3000 rpm, looking into maybe Geting some lower gearing (maybe the rmk gearing ) and a clutch kit , what your thoughts? , waste of money ? Buy a nicer sled with a stock deeper lug ? Looking to get deeper wet snow performance as where I live we tend to get big dumps of snow , then turns to ice then rain , then it’s hard for my wee lil .91 track haha , makes you a better rider forsure tho
My Old Sled thanks for the response , I’m gonna talk to some people and budget out what I’d need to push that track and get it all tuned , if it’s pushing 2g ur prob right , just sel the sled and put that extra funds for the upgrade into a longer , depper lug sled , anyways appreciate the thoughts !
For me its not just budget. If a sled came with something as an option, great, id do that. But the problem with franken-sleds is that the parts of your sled were all designed to work together. I could make a longer skid fit my old 670, but it would still be an old heavy 97 670 with a long track. But again, some guys would have fun doing that so if its fun, go for it,
Solid video. My boys and I have really been enjoying your channel as we recently purchased and have been fixing-up a ‘99 GT 583. Pretty sure we need to change/adjust our belt. Can you show or explain how to adjust the secondary in your MXZ?
Thank you. So glad youre enjoying it. There are three allen screws with 10mm locking nuts. Loosen all three locking nuts, adjust the allen screws a quarter turn each time, tighten lock nuts back up.
Thanks so much!! Thought it had something to do with those; missed the locking nuts. We’ve learned a lot from your videos to help get our sled up and running! Appreciate your content very much as well as your periodic injection of humor.
:):I know the video, I think Erick said “around 120 c”... I don’t know my belt temperature, (do you?) so I phrased it in a more practical way. Driving it for around the first 30 miles should allow the belt to heat and cool a number of times. The information I provide on break in is printed on the packaging for ultimax belts. The main thing is not to throw them on and pin it before it has a chance to get to temp a few times.
Nice video David! You mentioned doing a video about the clutch and it's the perfect time for me to ask this. My younger brother just bought a sled (ca 6 years old) and I noticed that the primary clutch reacts very slow to the throttle. What I mean is that I need very high rpm for the primary to start moving the belt. Have you experienced this and know why it's like that?
@@MyOldSled I have this same problem. Changed the belt today (with the spare one that was in there)still and same issue. Moved deflection indicator from 3 to 1 (Polaris 500 Classic) and still the same. Takes all the throttle now to get it moving. Maybe the spare belt was an old used belt too?
I think if you put you belt on backwards. If it does happen to blow they are made to blow the parts out of your clutch. Rather then wrapping around your clutch. Just a FYI so like he said read the words when its installed
Update from the idle wheel video: I got my sled running! There was little pieces of degraded fuel hose blocking the needles on the needles and seats from sealing.
If the sled is inching forward, as you try and pull it, it’s probably an issue with your primary clutch. Could be the bushing on the moveable Sheave Is toast, maybe a spring retainer issue
I have actually read of this happening. If you have the right belt, and it was properly adjusted, I would check to see if you have a broken motor mount. It can be clutches out of alignment but I think a motor mount is more likely.
Hi Ryan, sorry, that is incorrect. (Would I lie? :) belts are not directional - directly from the engineer at Ultimax. The belt is a continuous piece, the only difference from one side to the other is the printed text.
I thought they WERE directional: the cords are corded (cords are wound in the belt) one way and if you put one on backwards - and a belt starts to unravel - it'll spool up around your clutch, but on the 'right' way (so you can read them), the cords would come loose in the same direction as the rotation and not spool up - no?
Lol. What would you think my answer would be, given the video you just watched. :) Your thinking is a very common misconception. one of the Ultimax engineers put a video out explaining that, and I contacted a couple of belt manufacturers. As i explain in the video, the arrows or lettering are just so you always put it on the same way.
Hi Kayla, if you mean which Ultimax, there is a belt finder on their site, but I believe your sled takes an XS803. If you mean and OEM belt I think it is 417300586.
Hi Mit. Sorry, that's a common misconception. The cogs allow the belt to remain stiff in cross section, while allowing it to remain flexible around the hub. Its always a good idea to stick with the manufacturers recommendation, so I can't fault you there. Do you know who manufactures the belt you run?
If you smell burning rubber when you bury your sled and try to drive it out, you've smoked your belt. Clean the burnt rubber off your clutch before you put on your new belt so it doesn't slip. Speaking from experience...
Hi Victor. I'm sorry, but that is a VERY common misconception. It likely came about because manufacturers either advised people to install belts with the text so you can read it facing the sled, or printed a directional arrow on the belt. They advise you to install it that ways because the belt should alway be installed the same way. All of the information in this video was provided by or confirmed by, several of the major belt manufacturers.
I noticed the stand you are using for your sled. I used to have the same one and to be honest never liked it. The leverage with the handle was terrible and the stand itself is quite cheap. I highly recommend this stand from Princess Auto www.princessauto.com/en/detail/adjustable-snowmobile-lift/A-p1500002e I can lift my sled with one hand and it locks into place easily. I have 3 sleds and bought one for each. Best purchase I ever made
@@MyOldSledNp. I like to make sure my 10 and 13 year old watches your vids... Good tips for them, save me from having to explain lol. (from Barrie, ON)
Funny how people don't run around saying "you said to use pine twigs for fire starting! That doesn't work for me!!!!!" """"F YOU!!!!!!"""" Yeah there are crap products out there (if you get the cheapest stuff, good chance it is knock off when you are sorting by price alone online), but any name brand plug is good. If you have issues, rather than blame the product, find out WHY that product you like is WORKING for you, you'll learn a lot more than talking trash on another product :) I'd rather be on a trail confident than fawning over my brand choice.
Your taking this way too seriously. Briefly look at it every once in a while and change it If you see serious damage. Otherwise just run it till it blows
25 minutes of talking in a 12 minute video? Cool. Actually i demonstrate and explain exactly how to adjust the belt around 8:45. Its an overall video on belts, sorry there was a lot of words for you. Would you like your money back?
Finally had a chance to change the belt on my 05 Rev. Thought I'd use the opportunity to do a video on changing a belt and adjusting the secondary.

I have a question. I bought a 2007 mxz 600 renegade takes off great but when letting off the gas it does like a engine braking type of thing that’s ridiculous.. could that be a clutch issue?
Have you checked if your brake calliper is sticking? If it is, it can create heat, and that can cause problems.
@@MyOldSled I checked that and they are fine. You can wiggle them when the brake is off. I even drained all the old fluid out cause the previous owner didn’t do that it was brown. I bought a indy 94 440 I cant wait to go shred! What belt do you think is best for alaskan winters for the indy?
Go to the ultimax site and look for the belt for your sled, or when in doubt, the manufacturers recommendation is always a safe bet.
@@MyOldSled i can't find the actual manual any idea of where I could acquire one ? Love the vids by the way
Lol on the spark plugs thing but I also run champions in my xcr 800 as the ngk seems to foul alot sooner. Anyway keep up the great work on the videos
Hi Jesse. Thanks for commenting. If you keep watching, Ill keep making them
What's the same champion to a ngk br8es?
If its turning but its not moving in and out, Probably needs to come apart and be inspected, cleaned/repaired.
@@MyOldSled thank you!
Is there a adjustment on the old sleds like your 670 ??
Yep. Slightly different on my 670, but most have a similar adjustment
TIA.
Excellent video.
Thanks Coaster. Glad you liked it.
what does it mean if the belt squeels at idle and moves forward at idle on its own? I assume it needs adjustment on the secondary or a new belt? Any advice would be much appreciated!
Check deflection. Sometimes if they are too tight they squeal against the primary. Try dropping it very slightly in the secondary .
Great video! Lots of interesting tips.
Hi Kris. Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Hi Sebastian. That is so they go back the same way. That info is straight from the engineer at ultimax
Hi Sebastian, just a follow up, I also spoke with Dayco tech support another manufacturer of drive belts, and confirmed this. I generally do a week or two of research when putting together a video like this. But always follow the manufacturers recommendation
Where do you store the spare belt on this sled?
Nothings a waste if you have fun, but if it was me, I’d buy a sled with the features I want.
Thanks Seth. Good luck.
An ultimax engineer said you just need to do a few temperature cycles up to 150 degrees C to break in the belt
Well thats good to know. Thanks alot. Great videos by the way.
Thanks for watching.Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks. Whats the condition of the belt and the belt deflection like?
@@MyOldSled I have this same problem. Changed the belt today (with the spare one that was in there)still and same issue. Moved deflection indicator from 3 to 1 (Polaris 500 Classic) and still the same. Takes all the throttle now to get it moving. Maybe the spare belt was an old used belt too?
Hi I wonder how much you paid for the 2005 becaue I am looking at buying one
I bought mine a couple of years ago. This is a good year to buy there are so many sleds available
I think if you put you belt on backwards. If it does happen to blow they are made to blow the parts out of your clutch. Rather then wrapping around your clutch. Just a FYI so like he said read the words when its installed
Sorry Clayton, that is incorrect. The belt is the same either way. That is straight from the engineer at Ultimax.
great video
Thanks Doug. All the best for the holidays!
Update from the idle wheel video: I got my sled running! There was little pieces of degraded fuel hose blocking the needles on the needles and seats from sealing.
Nice work! Glad you got it going.
My Old Sled Thank you for the reply and keep making helpful videos!
You're most welcome.
Thanks bud good tips
Hi Aaron. Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it.
Dave can you help me. My sled cant start because when i pull start it moves forward
Do you mean as you pull the starter rope, the sled tries to inch forward
If the sled is inching forward, as you try and pull it, it’s probably an issue with your primary clutch. Could be the bushing on the moveable Sheave Is toast, maybe a spring retainer issue
when i look at my secondary clutch the belt was very tight
it temporarly works when i kick the clutch but it just full send by itself
my model is arctic cat t570 touring
Another Great video👍
Thank you! God you enjoyed it
Thank you for that video
Youre welcome. Thanks for watching.
When I was riding my belt it flipped over what does it mean please help me
I have actually read of this happening. If you have the right belt, and it was properly adjusted, I would check to see if you have a broken motor mount. It can be clutches out of alignment but I think a motor mount is more likely.
I do believe belts are directional for when they blow the the threads will come off in the direction of rotation and not wrap back the other way
Hi Ryan, sorry, that is incorrect.
I forgot ...check the video description.
How do you break in a new belt
Well, if it was me, I'd follow the break in procedure I gave in the video ;) but the belt probably has some listed on the package.
I know where to shove plugs now lol jk Great video!
In case you aren't aware, you're a Creator On The Rise. Just found your channel, but congrats! Where in ON are you? My dad has a cabin near Minaki.
Hi sandwich. Thank you for letting, me know!
Sorry...Bruce Peninsula, near Wiarton
What belt do I use for 06 skidoo gsx 600 h.o?
Hi Kayla, if you mean which Ultimax, there is a belt finder on their site, but I believe your sled takes an XS803. If you mean and OEM belt I think it is 417300586.
For the OEM I'd confirm with your local dealer but that's what I see at skidoopartshouse.
The top cogs are in fact for cooling, it adds surface area, it adds no strength. OEM belts is all that I will run.
Hi Mit. Sorry, that's a common misconception. The cogs allow the belt to remain stiff in cross section, while allowing it to remain flexible around the hub. Its always a good idea to stick with the manufacturers recommendation, so I can't fault you there. Do you know who manufactures the belt you run?
Hi Mit, Just found this. Eric is an engineer who designs belts. He explains the purpose of the cogs. ruclips.net/video/5JiaLa2qJKo/видео.htmlm36s
If you smell burning rubber when you bury your sled and try to drive it out, you've smoked your belt. Clean the burnt rubber off your clutch before you put on your new belt so it doesn't slip. Speaking from experience...
Id always clean clutches before installing a new belt. Thanks for watching
@@MyOldSled I am definitely subscribing to your channel. Thank you for the video!
What happens if you start the machine with out drivebelt
You shouldnt run a sled without a belt. The clutch can try to close and there is no belt, it can damage the clutch.
my father's sled's drivebelt broke while driving at big bumps
Bummer. Always check your drive belt before you ride.
FYI belts are supposed to go one way the cords are wrapped one way if it is on backwards and it blows it wraps around the clutches
Had the wrong link. This should help: ruclips.net/video/KaJBwUplF1Q/видео.html
Great video Dave,,,i have nothing to criticize..lol,,i know thats a 1st ! hahahahaha
Glad you liked it Joe.
Best purchase I ever made
Ill be doing a video on stands soon.
Took me a while, but you were right on with this comment! Will be doing a video on this topic.
Ultimax sucks, you should stick that belt up..... Nevermind totally kidding. Good vids. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lol. Thanks for the laugh. Glad you liked it.
@@MyOldSledNp. I like to make sure my 10 and 13 year old watches your vids... Good tips for them, save me from having to explain lol. (from Barrie, ON)
Im sorry but you dont even show the part when you put the new belt.....
I’m sorry but yeah, I did.
A NGK spark plug killed my family.
Sorry for your loss.
Very instructive but like all. americans. Way too much talking
Yeah typically I talk when I explain something. That’s probably why it’s very instructive. Go figure. Also, I’m not American.
Your taking this way too seriously. Briefly look at it every once in a while and change it If you see serious damage. Otherwise just run it till it blows
Seriously bad suggestion. A blown belt can damage a sled and injure a rider. It happens, but no you don’t just run it till it blows
I thought the sarcasm was obvious
@@MyOldSled A guy blew a belt and it busted through the footwell and broke his foot.
Another how to video with 25 minutes of talking but not actually showing adjusting 😂🤦♂️🤦♂️
25 minutes of talking in a 12 minute video? Cool. Actually i demonstrate and explain exactly how to adjust the belt around 8:45. Its an overall video on belts, sorry there was a lot of words for you. Would you like your money back?
