Love these SDC reviews and appreciate that you are now including the mic boomed above in the spoken word tests.
Thanks Matthew. You can thank Sound Speeds for influencing me to do that. It's been really fun for me to try and sort out how to get the best out of mics in those positions. I still have so much to learn about that technique though.
Huge fan of the MC930. I've got a pair of them that I use for Live Sound and they never cease to impress me with how natural and clean they sound. Their unhyped character along with super clean off-axis response helps so much when working with Jazz or Classical artists.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with these Ian. It's extremely beneficial to hear people's real world experience and use cases with the gear that's covered. I use these mics for a month or two max, so hearing from people who use them in their daily kit is so incredibly helpful for people who are researching what to by. Thank you!
Your reviews are so insanely thorough now I wonder if you have any plans to do some re-reviews of some mics from 4-5 years ago? A room treatment test and comparison test of the M201 tg would be really useful considering how much your review have grown since then.
Thank you for those kind words. Re-reviewing one of my all time favorite mics? I don't mind if I do that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.
Everyone who works with sound should subscribe
Pretty sure we’re all here.
hi hello it's me, I'm a live mix engineer :D
I won't argue with that. Thank you for the vote of confidence.
So glad to see more SDC reviews!
Slowly working my way through the stack I have. I had fun getting them and seeing which ones I liked, just never got around to reviewing them. They're happening now.
I love that KM184. Smooth all the way around. Sounds like a Neumann and does what it should. Great detail and smooth top end.
Yeah the KM184 is a fantastic mic,. It's garnered that popularity for a reason and it delivers on it.
I love these mics! I recorded drums with these as overheads years ago and they sounded great. I wish I owned a pair. Great review.
Thanks for sharing your experience with these mics. It's incredibly beneficial for people researching in the future. I appreciate it very much.
Loved the sound of the SE8 sounded great to my ears.
Agreed, the sE8 sounds pretty great.
Not as great as you ;)@@Podcastage
Your power-pop riffs are always great, but this is my favorite so far 🤘
Thank you so much Chris, I really appreciate that.
Another great video and review. I would love to see you review the cloud 44a ribbon mic
I'm shocked that I haven't tried any Cloud mics yet. Hopefully one day I can try them out. Thanks for the suggestion.
I see you're reviewing more small diaphragms. Love it!
Yes sir. That's the plan, to review more and more SDCs. The stack groweth.
I’ve enjoyed your videos forever now. All your sound tests sound good. I think ALOT of people would agree with me that you should make videos of on the microphones you have making presets or show us how you eq and compress basically what settings you use to get them to sound good cause it it’d be easy to follow along how well you explain things. Another suggestion is I think it’d grow your channel if you also started doing IOS videos. I have the Samson q2u and struggling to get a good sound for vocals on iOS it’s easier in mac. iPad or iPhone tips are basically the same thing. Thanks for all your detailed hard work ❤
All of my recordings here are raw and unprocessed, so if that's the sound you're going for, it's all about getting the audio as clean as possible before you hit record: shut off noisy devices, use the polar pattern to reject reflections / background noises, get a good placement of the mic in relation to the sound source... I have a whole video on how to improve the recording quality" ruclips.net/video/Ty8YLqOmbV4/видео.html
And finally, that VHS moments at 2:17 ;-) Nice review, thank you!
Ifi you'll excuse me I have to return some video tapes.
ps: you're welcome, and thank you.
I've got two of them and I love how they capture the balanced and natural sound of my acoustic guitar. I really don't feel like anything is missing from the MC930's, absolutely fantastic.
Thank you for sharing your real world experience with these mics. It's one thing for me to review them, but hearing from people who use them for longer periods of time is hugely beneficial when people are researching. Thank you FaultLine.
Was very impressed by the neutrality of these in this test and preferred them over the 184’s. I use Schoeps & AKG sdc’s and these seem to have the smooth refined quality of the Schoeps MK4 & MK21. Great review and I look forward to checking these out!
Love how you're always so thorough with your reviews. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the FIFINE K688 as I've seen a few reviews from other RUclipsrs and they seem to have various thoughts on the product's quality and performance.
Recently did a review of it recently right here: ruclips.net/video/bZQ0NiQnlrk/видео.html
First time on your channel. Great review. Man, I'd love to hear your review on all the products I'm researching. lol. Don't let anyone take your channel.
Wow that really means a lot Howie. I'm glad you found the channel, and I hope it helps you make more educated decisions on mics so you can spend less money and get great sounding recordings. Thanks so much for the kind words and for giving the channel a chance.
Great video as always. Please do more SDC please. Always looking for a great microphone that is a bargain at the same time.
There will be more SDCs, that's for sure.
Another great review. For my money, Beyer doesn't do "sleepers," they do _great,_ microphones. So many absolute classics; the M-201, M-380, M-88, M-160, M-260, just so many great microphones to cover such a broad range of applications. That said, the sE mic punched way above it's weight class and sE in general deserves their props for making really good mics that I think are being overlooked due to their affordability. Also, I was not surprised that the SM-81 also sounded great because every Shure mic does and you can't go wrong with their 81, their 137 or 141 SDC's.
It's possible that Beyer doesn't have sleepers. I just don't hear anyone in online content creation talk about them. So in my perspective these mics are underrated, just like the sE stuff. I also recently picked up a 141 from Shure which I can't wait to try out.
Thanks for the review, Thindrew
You're very welcome Luis, thanks for watching.
I really appreciate the mic comparisons and all the tests, instant subscribe. A mic that I was looking at, but a little skeptical of, is the PreSonus PM-2. At about $130 the frequency response is a little wobbly but still SHOCKINGLY flat...I record a lot of classical instruments so that's a win in my book, but there must be drawbacks somewhere. I would love to see you do a review on that mic.
I hadn't even heard of these. Thank you very much for the recommendation, I'll see about ordering a set to try out.
Looking great! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you very much, that's very kind of you. Hope you have a great day.
Thanks as always!
You're very welcome.
The extra weight in the lows/mids would sound nice as a distance stereo pair to capture a choir.
Great video as always . Based on your extensive experience with microphones, what would be a budget version $1k or less for the Telenfunken ELAM 251s ?
I have never used an ELAM 251 so I can't really determine any alternatives to it. I'd need to have it and be able to do side by side comparisons.
The conclusion/recommmendation is absolutely true concerning the se electronics and the shure. It's like it seemed to be for myself while listening, before viewing the final impressions. Liked the beyer, it is made in Germany, so 😊.... but as mentioned, the se and the shure are very good too, the beyer with more base, fuller sounding, the other two slightly more "brilliant", at least for my ears, listening on YT.
Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts. The MC930 sounds a bit smoother than the sE electronics SDC's, and the MC930 and SM81 sound a bit different, but we're splitting hairs. Many people will be more than happy with one of the sE electronics mics or the Shure mic, while simultaneously if they have the money many people will love the Beyer.
I would love to see a review of the sennheiser E614
I will eventually be doing a review of that. Slowly but surely working through the SDCs.
Listening to the comparison on phone speaker is funny. I heard all mics as quite distinct UNTIL you got to the Neumanns. The sound of this mic and the sounds of both of them became pretty much indistinguishable.
Compared to other sticks before the N, it's surprising how smooth and less bright this mic turned out. A definite favourite.... on the phone speaker. Need to re-listen on pc later...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the sound. Pretty interesting hearing the differences months later.
Bandrew looking healthy!
Thanks Nikolas - I've been trying to be.
Would love to see the AT4051b (or 4053b) in your SDC lineup!
I probably should pick up some of the AT SDC's. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi bandreeeeew
Could you review the Teenage Engineering CM-15 microphone?
Cheers!
I don't currently own the CM-15, and I don't have the budget to buy one. Maybe sometime down the line I'll stumble upon one and can review it though. Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you please review the WA - 87R2 would love to see that!
I don't currently have an 87R2, and don't have the budget for one currently, so it won't likely happen for quite some time. But thank you for the recommendation.
Lookin tan and health dude!🔥
I was about to say he looks great!
Thanks man, I really appreciate that. I changed my lights and fixed my white balance, so that probably helped.
Danke!
Thank you so much Rainer!
The 930 is an under-promoted microphone, and I’m not sure why. I was sent a pair of these to try when on the road with Julio Iglesias as he was using a Beyer vocal condenser at the time. They found a home as drum overheads. Its rare complete lack of hype makes it ideal for many such uses. Toms and snare sounded best of all in the 930s. Lovers of the Neumann KM184 will be right at home with the 930.
Man I really wish that you made videos sharing all your expertise and knowledge. You rock Peter! Thanks for everything!
Please sir can you review this mic Xtreme Acoustics Kadence C01-SL Unidirectional, Condenser Microphone ..
Thanks for all the efforts and time you put in making all your videos 🙏🏼 really appreciate it..
I don't currently have any plans to review that mic. I haven't purchased it, I hadn't heard of it before, and this is the first time it's been suggested. I also checked and it doesn't appear to be available in my country. Sorry I can't be of any help, I hope you find a review that gives you the answers you need on that mic.
@@Podcastage yeah 😅 no need for that because i already purchased the mic and i regret it 💀 it's a very bad and worse mic at its price range.. bm800 i had was wayyyy better than it,but it's two times the price of the bm800.
The bm800 had more dynamic range and good sound quality.. i just regret making such mistake..
By the way i got it from Amazon online in India..
I think they would be good for drum overheads. What do you guys think?
I look forward to hearing what people say in response to your question because I don't do drum recording.
the clarity is as prominent as a Beyerdynamic
I don't know what you mean, but it's a good sounding mic, and Beyerdynamic is a great company that should be more popular with how good many of their mics sound.
I'm surprised you didn't compare it to your ol' favorite, the M201TG
Yeah I didn't do that because I was just comparing SDC's to SDC's.
you should do a gutair montage video
Maybe one day I'll get around to doing that. Great suggestion. Thanks.
Lovely mics when they work. I've got 2 pairs. I love them. Great for most acoustic instruments, and my favourite for recording acoustic guitar. However one of mine sounded faulty, andwas sent to Polar Audio, at the time the main UK repair agent, and has never worked properly since, leaving me very disappointed.
Ivan - That's terrible to hear that you ended up with a faulty mic. I also get that it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth in regards to the piece of gear. I had the same thing with the Manley Reference Cardioid, and I had to wait a few years for those feelings to abate before I reviewed it. Again, that sucks your mic is faulty and I hope that Beyerdynamic can do something to resolve it for you.
New updated headphones setup as I can see. What is a /producer/model?
New headphones are only for tracking, they are the Rode NTH100s. For critical listening I'm still on the HD650
@@Podcastage never heard about RODE phones, but 650 are very very fine ones
How come the neuman u87 doesn’t really sound that much different or better?
Theres deminishing returns on good mics. You can generally tell that the things around $300+, maybe 200 ish, sound a lot less tinny than the $100 ish ones. But comparing the $300+ to the $1000+, the difference is insanely minimal. The best studios in the world may be able to make use of the benefits but definately not needed for normal use.
Elijah's response is great and I don't think there's much more to add there.
It's possible that your playback system is also not allowing you to hear as much of a difference between the two as well.
Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts.
The differences tend to become a lot more noticeable when you build a multitrack arrangement track by track - using the same mic to lay down every part. Vocals and guitars ranging from 75-100 dB don't push these mics very far, either.
Ah, I'm in a pickle. Can't decide between NGT 3 (350 $ - used), Oktava mk012 (350$), Beyerdynamic MC930 (470$) and WA-84 (380$) for streaming/online lessons. My setting is untreated room with dogs barking outside the house. I would work in front of my PC.
Do you have any suggestions?
Sounds great to me
I agree, it sounds great.
I hate mics that you need a tool to change settings. DIP switches are annoying. That being said, that mic has a really nice low end. The sm81 and KM184 were the only ones that were comparable. The 184 sounded closest to me. Great sounding mic.
Yeah if you're constantly changing them, I imagine that would be a pain in the rear. For someone like me who just sets it and forgets it, I like it because I'm less likely to accidentally hit one of the switches.
Sounds good - very neutral and I bet it takes EQ nicely. OK, the SM81 fits that too, at a lower cost, and the KM184 is pretty much the gold standard for SDC, albeit at a premium price. As others point out, there's not a lot of improvement vs. price with most mics once you pass a critical threshold. That's about $300. I think the selling point here is the extremely flat response, but you're gonna have to be careful with placement especially with voice, and it doesn't like to be knocked around. I really did like how it sounded on the electric guitar, but for acoustic I'd like something with a bit more upper air. SDC market is crowded and there are a lot of good choices these days.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them. Yeah the SDC market is very crowded and that's great for us consumers who are simply looking for a tool that fits our needs. Because with these options We're able to find the exact tool for the job because of it.
A personal fav... the MC930 is rad. It works better with api pres than neve but it's glorious on strings.
Why do you say that
Very interesting about the difference in performance based on the Preamps. I haven't dove too deep into that world, but I do have a few 500-series preamps one from API and another from NEVE, so eventually I'll explore that. I imagine that the smooth top end on this would be really nice on strings. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Why is this video maxing out at 720p? 4K was quite glorious for the past few weeks!
I don’t know. I uploaded 4K.
Hi which as a pro-audio phile do you think is better for singing lewitt lct 240 pro, mxl 990, mxl 770,mxl.v67g,se x1a, at2020 or akg p120? I say the video comparing them but havent heard a singin test. Its alright but thank for the help!
MC930
240
@The Tired Horizon in my opinion at2020 is sounding harsh and its not like the type of mic i like. Maybe mxl 990 suits me, and lewitt lct 240 pro is also good.for.the price. Ill see because i need a mic just for SOMETIMES to record. Thanks!
@The Tired Horizon Ok thanks, with all that being said, which any other mic in this price range would you recomend? Like your explication!
@@Markisbeatz355 Go with the AT2020 or the Lewitt. They're built to last and sound good. I recommend you give the 2020 another listen. It's a good mic that's also really versatile. Mac DeMarco used one to record the drums and vocals on his "Salad Days" album.
Do some headphone reviews! =) (even if on the other channel)
I have come to realize that I don't do well reviewing headphones, I don't have the standards that the headphone channels have and I don't have the technical know how that they have. They have measuring rigs that cost tens of thousands of dollars and they have golden ears.
I'd suggested DMS, The Headphone Show, Crinacle, ElJefe, ThisIsTechToday. They all do a great job with this stuff.
Maybe t.bone SC 140 sometime in the nearest future...
Cheers
I don't have any current plans to review T.Bone mics because they're not available where I am.Maybe one day. Thanks for the suggestion.
One of the best sounding mics youve tested. But without "cherry mx blue" I'm lost.
That's very high praise for the microphone. I do think it sounds quite good. Gateron blue are pretty similar to Cherry MX Blue so it's kind of an apples to apple comparison, but one is a honey crisp while the other is a cosmic crisp.
The MC930 is a great mic when using it for choir recording. But I have four Shure SM81 and they are really very similar and very natural sounding. So I didn´t go for the Beyerdynamics.
SM81's are fantastic.
Would love some other applications say a ride cymbal or a snare 😊🎉😮😢😅❤
I would love to include those samples if I could. Perhaps down the road I can add those tests, but in my current situation, I am unable to do that.
My opinion in short: the MC930 seems to be a very, very good microphone!
can you re review sennheiser mk4
I should do that sometime. Thanks for the suggestion.
how about akg c1000
I don't have an AKG C1000 so it's not on the schedule yet but I will eventually pick up some AKG SDCs to try out.
Hmm... and still sE 8 is most pleasant sounding mic of all these SDC's to me. Thick and round sound without harshness.
The SE8 is a quite good sounding mic, that's for sure.
They sound great when they work. Lost signal on one. Had it repaired by Beyerdynamic warranty repair folks twice totaling over $400. One is still around 15db lower output than the other. (Matched pair). Beyerdynamic and the shop both said tough luck. So I’ll never buy a Beyer product again. But they do sound great lol.
I had this same thing happen to me.
I hear some low frequencies bouncing off your desk I think
I wouldn't be surprised. My setup is very common for people who create podcasts and RUclips videos. I try not to go too overboard with making the room perfect, I try to make it representative of what most people are going to have.
if one want a mic one can sing with well and connect it to a camera preferably wireless or by 3.5 mm jack what mics to look for really?
I am thinking of buying an Insta 360 X3 camera but the sound is horrible in that camera,. some people say, get the Rode Wireless Go ll.. but other people that are musicians tell me, Noooo, the sound to sing through Rode Wireless Go ll is useless... ok. fine... but then, what mic shall one connect to such a camera or any camera that use 3.5. mm jacks? I wanna interview people on the street and sing with them or record them play their music and broadcast it live directly with no need to sit at home later to sync things as I wanna broadcast live more often than not.. What mic can do the job?
thanks all creatives that been out n' about and tried these things!
:)
On cameras I use either a Sennheiser MKE200 or the MKE400. I tried others including Røde but found the Sennheiser mics to be better.
@@wayneholmes637 ok, thanks , gonna look into them!
Way out of my realm of expertise since I don't test these mics. That's clearly a massive hole in my knowledge so perhaps it's something I should look into. Thanks for the question, sorry I can't be any help.
@@Podcastage no worries. I guess I continue with XLR mics instead
i think it starts lagging when you get too far away from mc930
That's an interesting description of a sound as "lagging". Or maybe you're just saying it falls behind the competition. I thought it worked pretty well in the overhead booming position about 10-12" away.
@@Podcastage now having rewatched the segment I think I was referring to the glitchy visuals 😉 @ 2:17
Sounds great!
Out of my budget though 😥
The SE Electronics ones sound pretty good too and they're a lot more affordable.
@@Podcastage the SE products you review & consistently good, definitely. I think my RE320 will suffice for me, nothing more can be done to help my voice 😂
Hey, you lost weight. 👏👏
Yessir, I've been working on it for a few years at this point.
I have a matched pair they will only leave in a box ..... with myself ;)
That's awesome that you have a matched pair of these mics, they sound fantastic. What great mics! Happy recording Stephen.
@@Podcastage thanks for the video's really like the comparisons and pallet cleansers that really helps! in this video man those SE8's on a budget are the great value the "Hello SDC's could be seen as better but I do think they are more muffled / Muddy in the lower/upper lows IMO, the Beyers are the best money wise, I got mine for £ 333 on ebay, now the new version are over £1k in the uk I just smile when I open the box ;) thanks again
my man is losing all the weight
I'm certainly working on it.
Manz lost hella weight
I'm slowly but surely working on it. Thanks for noticing.
Beyer at only $300 lower cost then Neumann "HELLO NEUMANN" I think people might just go for the Neumann.
$300 is a lot of money though. And for a matched pair that's $600. For that you could be a few other microphones for a full kit.
@@Podcastage That is a good point.
For that price, don't you guys think it's a hard sell, specially with things like Earthworks Ethos and Icon Pro available?
It's been months since I have watched this, but I think I mention that there are more affordable mics that offer a similar sound characteristic. However, it's still undeniable to me that this mic sounds good.
Sure sounds different than the other SDCs. Pretty bulky mid-section, frequency speaking. Boy, you sure can't trust the manufacturer's freq response curve - it just doesn't sound like it looks.
Yeah it's all about actually hearing the mics in action.
Do the Soyuz 013 FET!
The Z mics are nice but I'd say no thanks as there are other good choices that don't come from New Stalinville in this price range like the MC930 here but also the Beesneez Lulu FET, Austrian Audio CC8, Josephson C42, and Telefunken M60
@@7171jay boy oh boy do not google what the Neumann CMV-3 was used for

@@7171jay Ukrainian musicians where shocked once we saw z mics on Namm… it’s just shocking
The SE8 sounded better than the MC930 and just as good as the $3700 mic.
Wow! That's quite high praise for the SE8. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.
They're too different for either one to be better for anyone and everyone.
SE8 has a more clinical and obviously transformerless sound imho, with a strong upper-mid presence bump. The M930's is also transformerless but the highs are sweet enough that it could have fooled me into believing that there's one inside.
Se8 a bit cheaper :p
Yes it is quite a bit cheaper.
am I the first? holy hell
You were!
Why are you losing weight? Eat!
I'm losing weight because I was overweight and extremely unhealthy, and I don't want to be those things anymore. I want to be healthy so I can scream into microphones on the internet for another 40 years.
Awful plosive rejection and so-so sound...can do better for $600.00
Yeah the plosive rejection of pretty much every SDC is not great.
Uhh quick, think of something for top comment... This microphone sounds AWFUL.
Not really, it sounds great :)
Interesting attempt at a top comment. Ha.
