      Andy, trying to get into the CNC game. In light of the 5 pro just released, your thoughts on spending $3k for the Pro XXL vs $5k for the 5 Pro as a FIRST cnc? I am the one you would call a complete newb. ZERO experience (though I do have a touch of common sense).

    I have been using my Shapeoko 3 XXL for years now and have Loved it! My very first carve was a 3d police badge that took the entire table and 23hrs on the finish cut. But as you mentioned a palm router just isn't reliable enough. I've had 3 failures (not all the same brand), which is frustrating if it happens 12 hours into a 16 hour carve. I plan on buying the new Pro 5 and the VFD spindle and have no hesitation in doing so. I did notice someone commented about dust, and all I can say is, I use a Suck It dust boot and a Grizzly 2hp dust collector and have pretty much 0 dust. Thanks for the Video!

    All I can say right now is I’m super happy with my Shapeoko 4 xxl I bought a few years ago with the Dewalt palm Route, the only real problem I’m having is I don’t use it enough to get good at or comfortable with it. Other than that I’m still as happy as a tornado in a trailer park with my machine, lol 😂 I’ve done a few small upgrades to my Shapeoko like belt covers which really helped a lot with sawdust, my next upgrade will definitely be a new spindle. I’m just a garage hobbyist not a professional. Thanks for the video and thanks for not trying to sell the new Shapeoko 5, and thanks for only giving a honest opinion comparing all the models.

    Thanks for the video. I knew a desktop was going to be the starting point and was leaning towards the 1F at the time. There really wasn't any competition until 1F released their new version last year and that made the decision harder and more expensive. I had already decided that after a few years i was looking at either the Avid or Axiom and was lucky that an older gentlemen not far from me decided his CNC was a little to much for him and wanted to sell it. I ended up getting an Axiom AR8 Pro V5 with all its accessories for a great price, a machine that had less than 50 hours use. Yes i spent more than i planned but dont regret that in the least.
    The quality of the Axiom and the AVID are certainly next level but i have to say i still believe the 1F would have been an excellent machine to start with and now it looks the new Shapeoko 5 will be similar.
    I would love to put the 3 machines or 4 with the AVID side by side and do real comparison,
    Cheers,
    Andy

  • @JeffRevell
    @JeffRevell Год назад

    I bought an X-Carve several years ago and it's more than paid for itself. I'm still using the same belts and same DeWalt Router than came with my machine. What I love most is that it's the 750mm model, which it the perfect size for my shop. WHile I would love to have a larger machine I just don't have the room. One thing that I know about my machine and most others out there is that there is a market full of upgrade possibilities for almost any machine. From rails to stepper motors to dust boots to spindles. If you want a better machine, there's probably someone out there making upgrades to improve on what you already own. As for the ala cart system that you mention, I didn't really find it all that complicated. You have to buy a router, which is also not included with the Shapeoko 5, and you need to buy a waste board, which is basically a sheet of MDF. You will need to buy bits but that's kind of a given with any machine. That 1/4" endmill encluded with the Shapeoko isn't going to get you very far. Just saying that add-ons are a thing for all CNC machines, not just the Onefinity. Inventables has made a cottage industry out of selling stock material, bits, and accessories. I do agree though that the more players there are in the desktop space, the better it is for the consumer in general. More choices, better tech, and more bang for the buck.

    You hit it exactly Andy. As a complete novice, I went with 1F not only for the ball screws but the ease of setup as well. As for the buffet style of ordering, I liked that I could buy the machine then add what I wanted/needed. I was also sold on Vectric Vcarve which I got through 1F at a discount. I am waiting on a response from Shapeoko about using that same spindle they do have the 80mm mount and the z axis is said to be beefy enough to handle it. I am wondering about the x, y, and gantry is ok with it. I am not sure the 1.2 spindle they offer is beefy enough and it cost more than 2 times the one I specked out. While this was extremely frustrating, the even more frustrating experience was the Carbide 3d support staff. Getting anyone to answer a phone was like pulling teeth with NO Novocain! The constant emails back and forth just delayed the time it took to get the machine working. Finally, I gave up on getting a resolution from Carbide 3d. As someone who has run 5 Shapeoko belt driven machines, they work awesome and I have not had an issue I didn't cause myself. That said my SO5 Pro is on order with a spindle. We have a Shapeoko Pro at work and it continues to make parts for scientific experiments frequently. No reason to upgrade it as it fits our needs perfect.
    As far as no machine changing the market more than the Onefinity, I kinda agree, but with the caveat that you go from after the release of the Shapeoko 3. It changed the market at it's time more than the OF did at it's release.
    I completely agree that the router is the limiting factor. I would bog and stall the router before the motion system hit it's limitations.
    One thing that is both the best aspect and the least talked about for the Shapeoko is the hybrid bed. With the structure/strength it adds and legitimately the best workholding as standard equipment of any non-vacuum table CNC router, it is easily the most important aspect. I had a Shapeoko 3 that I added an extrusion bed to. It was WAYYYYYY better that the SO3 factory wasteboard, but the hybrid bed is vastly superior to even that upgrade.

But this is where it gets ambiguous has to how tight. There are crazy posts out there that teach you how to measure the correct tension by snapping the belt and measuring the tension and sound of the oscillation. And I bet those techniques are correct although I never did them. I never had problems with my 3XXL after the initial retightening. But my Pro XXL, had to be retightened numerous times. And it cost me money for it to slip in the middle of a job. For me- it just happened too many times considering how much money I spent on the machine. How is a palm router not taking advantage of a ball screw system? You stated because it could fail sooner. That is broad opinion and changes with each brand of palm or dedicated router. When it comes down to it I would rather replace a palm rougher I can get down the street then wait a week for a belt. Getting the most functionality out of the lead screw via spindle & vfd would be interesting and something to work towards eventually but in my opinion is not the highest priority in the list of functions and features that interest me most about the onefinity. Belts are the most underrated form of energy transfer in the modern world. They are superior to hard materials in many ways. They do not transfer vibrations, are virtually silent, have less backlash than gears, screws, and racks, are very accurate (repeatability to within 0.0001") and are usually cheap. Composite belts are ultra strong, and can move large loads for long periods without needing replaced.

    Shapeoko 5 Pro looks good, but there is genius in the Onefinity design that will make it hard to compete with by just improving conventional design. The biggest design flaw I see on all of these desktop machines is the Z axis that means you have to clamp the spindle far from the collet. It's not great for stiffness and it's not great for addons like a dust boot or an automatic tool changer. Luckily the Onefinity design is easy to DIY.
