Most western fans would argue the Duke, aka John Wayne, is the goat of westerns. I don't even think that can be disputed as back in the heyday of that era of television/cinema it was nearly unanimous. Clint is arguably second best, but I'd wager true fans during that scene likely had many candidates vying for second place.

@qotsa1 Unforgiven is definitely top 10 Western movies of all time. Josey Wales was amazing.
Obviously all the Dirty Harry movies are amazingly well done.
Gene Hackman played that despicable, evil, corrupted town sheriff who brutally kills the main character's best friend in retaliation for killing those cowboys that cut the hooker and then him not wanting to leave town.
At first, you think the story is all about the main character riding out and hunting for the guys who did that to the woman with his crew, to get the prize money and to get revenge for her, but then you realize it is actually a revenge story against the corrupted sheriff who has a tight grip on all the people in the town and has everyone on his side.
That last moments where he takes care of business by gunning down everyone in that saloon is just awesome. Then he rides off into the Sun, with the money, goes and buries his old friend, and nobody ever sees from him again.
Same with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Both amazing stories and great quickdraw scenes. The eye squint was a big part of Jim Carrey's standup Schtick when it came to imitating Clint Eastwood.

Based on this 'draw' rationale 'Quick And The Dead' would be the best western ever For unsimplified, non-cliche westerns, few pieces evoke real emotion the way Unforgiven did. It was viscerally frustrating to watch the non-draw. The resolution was way more impactful as there was not a climax every 5 minutes prior to it. Many people can't identify with with characters who have flawless super hero abilities and clever spontaneous quips right on cue. Tombstone was fast food compared to Unforgiven.

Oh Chael, you finally lost a round. Unforgiven was not just the greatest western movie of all time it is one of the greatest movies of all time. And it did the best and most respectful job of portraying a man who purposefully set aside his days as an outlaw that had achieved almost super villain notoriety for the love of a woman. Long after her passing the character has been called to put on the supervillain, outlaw mantle, again to find that her Christian influence had seeped so deep into his soul that it seemed an impossible task. Yet, ironically love--the love of a slaughtered friend--is what help Tim find that old monster. Because of it that film was almost a tragedy. I think you're wrong. Show a lot of people still look for the spaghetti western quick draw, but Unforgiven gave us so much more than that. I am so surprised that it went over your head, sir.

Bear in mind that all of the participants had single-action revolvers--save Doc Holliday, who had a shotgun--and the rate of fire was decidedly slower than people imagine.

This might just be the real reason. They were kind of easing out Costners character in the storyline of the show anyway. I disagree about there being one main star of Yellowstone though. I think it’s been a strong ensemble of characters from the start and I think that’s kind of the point of the show. You see all these different types of characters, what motivates them, wha has damaged them and made them who they are and how they develop while dealing with those things. It’s not just about a star or life on a ranch it’s about life and family and relationships of all different kinds. Some of the smaller less featured characters are just as interesting as the more prominent ones.

Its called, "Top Billing" and Costner probably had it written into his contract. But the public is a very fical beast. Costner could have hung on and continued to get it but it would feel hollow to him. He has enough money that he doesn't need the part. It was more of a love of the craft. Costner can fall back and save face because he can say he wanted to direct as well. They wouldnt let him and he could use it as an out. Also Chael your wrong, Unforgiven was so good that it broke the mold. It didnt depend on an age old formula. The ones that can do that are special just for that reason.

Taylor Sheridan is the creator, not the writer or writers.. Rip was written very deliberately, and regardless of initial intentions, they chose to keep writing rip into the show the way they did because they were riding the wave of what the fanbase really enjoyed and wanted… It’s bigger than Kevin Costner, and I think that’s hard to accept for a guy like Kevin Costner who is by far the highest profile actor on the show and is used to be #1.
Also, you need to watch more westerns if you think Val Kilmer is the best character ever from that genre. He’s nailed it in that movie but it’s 1 movie. Clint Eastwood was an absolute beast in westerns over and over and over again.

If you're that simplistic, then you can accept that. When you found out what they meant by the train station, Jamie knowing this then finding out about his real past. The vendetta between Jamie and Beth, then the idea that the show made that Jamie is now vindicitive toward the Dutton brand, then Beth catching Jamie dumping his real dad's body at the train station. Costner/Dutton is still the biggest story line for the show. Rip's a badass. This is probably the most popular boy name in the last 5 years, but John Dutton clicks MANY angles. Rewarding/treating Rip like his son, the war against Jamie, the name is Dutton that's tied to Yellowstone ranch that so many different characters are trying to take out. IDK this created a brand new crop of city slickers but Chael's opinion here is pretty bad for someone who's not known as simply a MMA "knuckle dragger"

Seinfeld wasn’t just named after Jerry he helped write the script. Oh and by the way he is the most successful comedian of all time… Costner left because he wanted to fold horizon and they wanted him to film Yellowstone instead.

The duel that Chael claims is the entire point of a Western (Chael is a shameless liar, but I'll accept his premise for the opportunity of telling him he's wrong) has only occurred a few times in history. One example in particular, that has inspired countless scenes in film (television, radio, books, etc) is an incident that involved James Butler Hickok (aka Wild Bill Hickok) and Davis Tutt, following a dispute over a card game in Springfield, Missouri. They went outside to settle it. Davis Tutt fired first and Hickok took his time to line up his shot before firing. There are other examples, obviously, but this one in particular appears to be the only one where both combatants walked out in the street and squared up with each other before drawing their pistols. In movies the winner is almost always the guy who clears his holster first, but in real life a lot of these guys were terrible shots. Hence the incident known as 'the shootout at the OK Corral.' The Earps and the Clantons/McLowreys were right up in each other's faces, at a distance of less than ten feet, when the first shot was fired. In closing, the reason Chael is undefeated is because he's immune to facts and understands that they have no place in rhetoric or hyperbole. Let us all show fealty to King Chael! 🎉

Uncle Chael, c'mon! Yellowstone? Bro that's a dumb show, seemingly created by people who have never even been to America, let alone the west. How can you say 'Unforgiven' sucks? Best western movie ever made. I love when you talk about things not connected to combat sports. It reminds me that you truly are the king of the pitch. You can make all opinions sound so credible and convincing, no matter how preposterous the notion might be. Ridiculous take.

@@fabricationnation8052 Bro, taylor sheridan was a theater kid in high school & his dad was a cardiologist. He was born in North Carolina. Gimme a break. Yellowstone sucks. It's target audience is a 70 yr old woman from the east coast who remembers him from bull durham & jfk. I'm literally right about everything, again. That's my nickname for myself: "Right Again"
