I'm using the helix effect only straight to amp never have used the modeling live, i use the Timmy and ocd on the helix. they are my favorite overdrives that's kinda funny you didn't even touch those two I'm going to have to drive in a little deeper with these other overdrives. i'm glad you made this video Jason.

As an HXFX user, this is right up my alley.
Though I personally tend to often use traditional drive pedals before it and use the unit more for delays, verbs, and modulation.
But it’s fun to play around with drive pedals I don’t have... and it’s convenient to only bring the one box to a jam session, plug into whatever amp is available, and know I have access to pretty much any flavor of overdrive I could ever possibly want.

I find it interesting to use the drives very subtly.I see them as an extension of the amp in the Helix to get that dynamic sizzle.Your advice has been great.

I've been using the helix in 4 cable method from the first day that I got it. My main boosting pedal was the ep booster by xotic. A line6 eco park and a strymon blue sky in the loop, set as a plate reverb.
I have the exact same tone and feel with the helix.
I have tested all my drive pedals and I have borrowed some from some friends.
The models in the helix sound all like the real thing.....
There was only the exception of an old fuzz face....but the guy who gave it to me said that he has 3 of them and they all sound different...

I am currently using my Helix in 4cm. I have 3 pedals in a loop ! Demeter Compulator, Cornish G2, TDX Tube Driver. I can easily replicate the Compulator with the Optical Comp and TDX with the Tube Driver. You really can’t tell them apart. The G2 is another matter, there is nothing in the Helix that does it. Line 6 should really do some Cornish stuff !

I never gelled with overdrive/distortion pedals at all and always found them too harsh and unusable for the tones I was after. Don't get me wrong, I love a raging amp or amp model just fine! I am now starting to experiment some and I have been trying to setup the amp kind of anemic sounding to start and then start from there with the distortion. I'm getting some sounds that I can work with now. I found the archetype amp takes these pedals well and I use the Minotaur with it.

what amps do the tube driver best work with

I prefer to adjust the sag, bias, bias x to get more sustain and drive out of the amp models rather than use the overdrive/ distortion models!

Interesting to hear the Helix Drives through an Amp outside the Modeler. They are excellent. I've got to watch your video on the Steve Vai Legacy Drive!
When a Parameter is changed on the HX Stomp, and then the knob is pushed back down, the Parameter reverts back to a default setting. Is there some way to change what the "revert to" setting is? For example, if it was 6, could I change it to always revert to 5 instead?
    Thanks

Right click on the block in HX edit and select "user default" down the list. On a full helix you can press the "action" (page right) and then select it also.

I’ve done A/B comparisons with many of the Helix vs “real” pedals and cannot get Helix to sound as good as actual pedal(s)

@@new1old You might want to take a look at the Helix CAB Block Settings. I recently discovered that Line 6 Helix has the High Cut defaulted to 8kHZ. Many real "Guitar Cab Speakers," including Classics like the Celestion, have shocking steep high frequency cutoffs around 4-5kHz! The Celestion G12M Greenback has a Frequency Range Spec of 75Hz - 5,000kHz (based on the Chart at Celestion), and a steep High Cut dropping the volume from about 107dB down to about 77dB in a nearly straight line slope in the range from around 3.5kHz to 7kHz. I'm not sure if I calculated this right, but I think that is 30dB decrease in one octave!
I play/listen through Monitoring Headphones, and setting the CAB Block High Cut to Real Amp Cab Frequency Chart settings makes Dialing in all other Blocks/Effects easier and produces more realistic results. YMMV

I honestly can’t figure this out. What’s the advantage to using a giant, $1700 processor via the 4 cable method into a heavy expensive amp, as opposed to using a sub $700 hx effects?

    • @Muzerino434

I do, but I also have two other amp models available via footswitch so basically I am using a real Marshall, and a Helix Badonk, and a Helix Fender with an array of about five effects via foot switches. If I was only using the effects then yeah, no point buying anything more than the HX Effects.

The Helix drives are really solid, but you have to take your time getting to know them - how the controls interact, which amps pair well with them, etc.
I've spent way too much time experimenting with every last fuzz and drive and amp and my favorite combination is the Ratatouille and the Park75Brt. With just those two blocks, I can get everything from warm Hendrixian cleans to Jimmy Page crunch to Soundgarden riffage and Sunn doom/drone.
