I love Guthrie he explains it perfectly most famous guitarist just show you it extremely fast and do no explaining but not Guthrie he teaches it like it's suppose to be taught.
@Guy Fawkes: You are belligerent beyond words. Few guitarists are more down to earth than Guthrie (I've met him a few times) and believe it or not, he'd be the first to point out the playing strengths of Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, B.B. King, and so on. And believe it or not, LOTS of people love Guthrie's music. It just caters to a different audience.
Guthrie is a player that knows he is one of the best, but pays homage to those who made it possible for him to be. It's weird seeing a person who is confident in their abilities, however knows it wouldn't be possible without those before him. Him and Shawn Lane are the two who combined the best of all and became something unreal.
Watched a lot of Guthrie play, I can't even recall if I've seen Guthire sweep at all because he combines so much playing naturally it doesn't stand out, but hes incredibly precise with it
Calm down its called a sense of humour, I found it amusing as a 'British' person and guitarist. Brightens up what can be a serious lesson for first timers being introduced to sweep picking. It's the kinda thing I do with students. If they want to know the history they can ask. Some people just want to have fun and play, isn't that what it's about?
Guthrie has a pretty good sense of humour, so I'd suggest there is an element of that. He is also British, so self-deprecation is also in his nature. What he was saying was not a lie though. Guitarists strive to find the most efficient way of doing things and part of that process is finding the technique that requires the least effort/co-ordination. In this sense, being lazy is not as much of an insult as it first appears to be.
There is a little TRICK here that Guthrie doesnt explain... in 2:37, when playing fast he ends in the 3rd string with an upstroke, then starts again with a downstroke, not up only like he demonstrates earlier. but because the last and first strokes are played so quickly, they become almost unapparent...D-D-D-U-D-U-U.
Have you ever heard of Tim Halcomb? He is very much "Page" inspired and knows what's cool. Check him out! Now that's a great unknown guitarist and his song writing is out of this world and has nice vocals too!
Actually sweep mastering sweep picking is great and there are no limitations because with odd notes the picking direction stays the same.when even numbers are played it reverses the pick motion so you could realistically play anything. How ever if you meant SWEEP PICKING Arpeggios your half right....
@Devonsasdw Yeah when your sweeping with high gain I find it necessary to mute with both hands. Picking hand I usually mute with my thumb and fretting hand wise let your hand off the note the to keep it from ringing out unnecessarily. Good luck man! :)
I can sweep pick very cleanly that too with much harder arpeggios and 5 strings. I'm only here to watch Guthrie cause he doesn't like sweep picking much according to his other video
@Martyfriedman001 oh ok. i like guthrie a lot, he along with mattias and ron thal are the new generation of virtuosos, but since i am a sweep picker myself, the comment just got to me a bit. ah well, cheers!
The implications of sweeping are so limited compared to other techniques. Even if you become 100% perfect at sweep picking, you're still limited to the 3-4 shapes moving up and down the neck. In my opinion, things like tapping or string skipping can expand seemingly infinitely in any direction, making them much more versatile and overall better abilities to learn as a guitarist.
learning the form and getting used to playing it in a fast manner requires practice though. not "easy" at all. but I challenged myself to the 100 days sweep picking exercise and indeed. its very much easier before i started :) but at the speed of guthrie.. uhhh 10 more years
How often do you try to nail something to the wall with a rock? Someone lazy had to invent the hammer. Someone lazy is someone that will find a way to do something more efficiently.
I don't know why people get so sad and talk about quitting playing and everything. Guys like Guthrie only motivates me if anything! It's the Malmsteens and Michael Angelos that makes me want to quit, they just suck...
@J0sHoo7 yeah, he's like an alternate-reality stewie where he becomes a hippie god-guitarist instead of a lonely gay man...but there was that one witness protection episode where stewie tore it up on the banjo...coincidence?
What's your favourite use for sweep picking?

One of the worlds greatest guitarists also just happens to be one of the worlds greatest guitar teachers. We are blessed beyond measure.
He is so good, its actually scary. He motivates me to practice and get better. Love Guthrie Govan.
'Lots of notes come out but your hands don't have to move very far, we like things like that.' 😂 Quality.
I love Guthrie he explains it perfectly most famous guitarist just show you it extremely fast and do no explaining but not Guthrie he teaches it like it's suppose to be taught.
Not only I can learn techniques from him I can also learn how to speak in lovely British accent..
I started to love british accent because of him
He is the Arthur king who deserves excalibur sword/guitar
Such an inspiring talent. Best guitarist in my book hands down, as a musician and as a person

*****, was that even English?
Man, I love listening to GG talk as much as listening to him play. Truly a rarity.
Guthrie is awesome!! In my top 3 favorite guitarists of ALL time!!
The man is unbelievably gifted.
Watched a lot of Guthrie play, I can't even recall if I've seen Guthire sweep at all because he combines so much playing naturally it doesn't stand out, but hes incredibly precise with it
it looks like he's not used to that much delay and distortion. he's a very bluesy dude
Beyond Brilliant ! Genius instructor!
his picking technic is amazing..
HE IS JUST A GREAT TEACHER
This guy is amazing!
This man, is amazing. Reminds me of Mikael Akerfeldt. He's calm, unexpectedly funny, modest, and an amazing guitar player.
I like listening to both of them speak! I wish I had a cool voice.
(awesome sweep).... "Hi, this is Guthrie Govan here" (awesome English accent) :D
Guthrie with a PRS, WIN. Off to see him at the clinic in Plymouth next week!!
Love the arpeggio and sound effects. They're quite the combo plater.😎
Thanks☺💖 I can sweep now!
Thank you 🙏
@HarryAndAGuitar It is to do a dirty sound because hes playing is so clean.

First three seconds in and I'm like "yeah I'll come back to this after 5 years"
Damn. What I would give (if I were rich!) to have guitar lessons from this dude.
This guy is a guitar god/nerd. Incredible guitarist
Well this dudes a beast.
i love guthrie
Thank you... new subcriber here idol!
People who critize famous musicians like Guthrie and Page over such small things will never understand the essence of music. Period.
you gay. Period.
Who's criticizing 😂
@crisDAwog Yeah that's true
Love his accent
he is one of the best guitarist at present and he sounds like stewie from family man
@MrJaapKooiman He sounds cool, thanks for telling me about him

i have a flashback by tc electronics that does that and it is very good,,has echo and delay,,,and compression
@JonothenRicher Thanks I'll try that out

How do you prevent the other strings from ringing in? Do you use you palm of the right hand or your index finger of your left hand?
Where's his suhr guitar?? I love that one!!
Have you ever heard of Tim Halcomb?
He is very much "Page" inspired and knows what's cool.
Check him out! Now that's a great unknown guitarist and his song writing is out of this world and has nice vocals too!
Which guitar he have????? Nice one and which setup of sound????
Actually sweep mastering sweep picking is great and there are no limitations because with odd notes the picking direction stays the same.when even numbers are played it reverses the pick motion so you could realistically play anything. How ever if you meant SWEEP PICKING Arpeggios your half right....
@richvaca This is a really old video. i assumed he was endorsed by prs some time ago
I love this fuckinn guy
Couldn't have said it better.
Thx Lick Library, they finally find Jesus to teach guitar
I need to learn how to play the painkiller solo but i haven't learned this technique :/
@Devonsasdw Yeah when your sweeping with high gain I find it necessary to mute with both hands. Picking hand I usually mute with my thumb and fretting hand wise let your hand off the note the to keep it from ringing out unnecessarily. Good luck man! :)
This is quite old now, Guthrie hasn't done many (if any) videos for LickLibrary recently as far as I know.
is that a PRS?
Guthrie doesn't sweep, he warp picks
@Devonsasdw I'm no Guthrie Govan but I try to help! Your welcome!
I think he's not using a red bear pick here. Any idea about which pick is he using?¿
Dunlop jazz iii
@@FSMusic86 seems like he's using a red nylon jazz iii xl
@riley3006 yea....i mixed it up with the nicholas cage movie- the family man
I can sweep pick very cleanly that too with much harder arpeggios and 5 strings. I'm only here to watch Guthrie cause he doesn't like sweep picking much according to his other video
i'm garbage at sweep picking, but i'm here for the same reason.
Weird flex but ok
sounds like a lick from strange kind of woman, deep purple (go ritchie,he was the first haha!!)
His mimics reminds me Pelin Batu.
of course you are buddy :)
which dvd is that from?
Which guitar he use in this???i want that
@Martyfriedman001 oh ok. i like guthrie a lot, he along with mattias and ron thal are the new generation of virtuosos, but since i am a sweep picker myself, the comment just got to me a bit. ah well, cheers!
every guitar center employee
the idea is building ur finger guys, not how many note/strings u may sweep..\m/
respect for Guthrie govan, yyeeeaaahhhh...\m/
Why use delay?

Try learning some Frank Gambale stuff :P
You can sweep anything, not just major and minor arpeggios
He seems like a mean teacher.
@GrindOffYourFace This was filmed a few years ago.
Tell me, how much are DVDs usually?
DVDs!? You must have put this comment up at least 3 years ago.
@mufc0794 yea you're rite i mixed it up with the Nicholas Cage movie....my bad
PRS!!
👍👍👍
What the hell is that intro ?! I watched that 4 times, thinking "How can you be that fast ?"
+MrThoss1 learn to sweep then u'll understand how easy it is
but first you must sweep the floor.
"easy" Maybe theoretical..
learning the form and getting used to playing it in a fast manner requires practice though. not "easy" at all. but I challenged myself to the 100 days sweep picking exercise and indeed. its very much easier before i started :) but at the speed of guthrie.. uhhh 10 more years
It is not easy the other dude is just a loud mouth
a lazy guitarist found it or a smart guitarist found it? Mr. Frank Gambale would very much disagree with you Guthrie. Respect.
S tfu
it sounds so warm, it would be much better if he's using the neck pickup....
Not if you're Frank Gambale, Tal Farlow or Marshall Harrison. Their sweeping techniques represent a whole harmonic approach to the guitar.
@MrJaapKooiman I am.
2:55: we loik things loike tha'...;-)
@wearetheworldforyou PRS Guitar
U have to be already good to do this...
still GG :D
also 2:56 is good
did he leave shur???? why is he playing a prs???
delay pedal ??
@HarryAndAGuitar i know if anything it muffles his sound it would sound alot mor articulate and clear without it
Paul Gasol
what did he say?
Jimmy Page already did! :-)
LOL indeed how you do you guys discover these things (this one almost killed me)
"We like things like that" XD
@GrindOffYourFace I think this is an older video.
How often do you try to nail something to the wall with a rock? Someone lazy had to invent the hammer. Someone lazy is someone that will find a way to do something more efficiently.
@Timmonsec he is 2011 years old lol
I don't know why people get so sad and talk about quitting playing and everything. Guys like Guthrie only motivates me if anything! It's the Malmsteens and Michael Angelos that makes me want to quit, they just suck...
Oliver Adam you jell brah?
hah great..the first 3 Seconds already killed me..
That delay is very annoying :L
@lastserenadeUK
Wow Really? I think he's really good looking. What a nice comment by the way.
@J0sHoo7 yeah, he's like an alternate-reality stewie where he becomes a hippie god-guitarist instead of a lonely gay man...but there was that one witness protection episode where stewie tore it up on the banjo...coincidence?
