If you really read the lyrics, it is about a man trying to convince a homeless man who has given up to go and clean himself up at the nearby YMCA. The YMCA's original purpose was actually to help homeless men get back into the world by starting with giving them food, a place to sleep, and showers to get cleaned up. Remove the background music and what you actually have is a very inspirational story about an older man trying to help a younger homeless man get his life back together.
