People only put the starter Pokémon against the rival’s starter, and the rest is random. I’m not saying that the player should have only Pokémon that’s the counterpart of the rival’s team (mechanic and story wise), but people should at least try to use Shuckie the Shuckle against Silver’s Sneasel, who are both originally from the same trainer.
Good/Bad boy Silver. Possible the rival with most backstory of all. Son of Giovanni, Slow Learner, Long Red Hair, He's got all. Oh, and the Music. Good Lord that music is sick
He was an awesome rival, because he actually felt like a rival. Very determined and hated the protagonist. The battles with him felt like there was a lot on the line, just like against blue
Yes! A rival that literally stole a starter pokemon was a lot to gasp about. The character development pulled into his character was short lines of text, but very engaging. I was so invested in fights against him as a kid.
I’m surprised Silver wasn’t introduced into the show when Ash and co. went to Johto. It would’ve definitely added more depth to the mythos and give Ash an opponent that makes Gary look like a saint.
Especially since team rocket and giovanni was already a presence in the show... revealing Silver as the son of GIOVANNI would've made me go insane as a kid
One of my favorite little details in the remake is in the post game, you actually run into Claire and your Rival where you can challenge them both to a Tag Battle and when you beat them in this Tag Battle, if you go back to New Bark Town and talk to professor Elm he'll straight up tell you that your rival walked into the building, placed his fully evolved starter's pokeball on the table, and then he just walks out and leaves. The in game explanation as to why he did this is because he started his journey stealing a pokemon that was not his and when he was able to form his own team off his own merit and skill he felt like he didnt need his starter anymore saying how it was time to return it Its a lot like how there are 2 sidequests in Gen 2 where random NPC's will let you borrow their pokemon to make them feel safe and you're given the option to keep those pokemon or give them back. Now why the fuck you would give them back is beyond me because even in the remake there is no reward for doing this. I feel like this was an undersight. Its a lot like how in Pokemon Yellow, random NPC's will straight up just give you the 3 starters from Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow if you don't have 2 Gameboys and a Trading Cable.
I love the fact that when we face him in the pokemon league, he has the champion theme, implying that he has that level now. It would have been awesome that he got it too in HGSS!
I like how you stand by at least with your fire starter versing his water starter. That’s destiny battle right there. Not to mention a bit challenging. And tempting lol.
Amazingly enough, Silver is, if I'm correct, the only rival who doesn't set his team up to follow the theme of Grass/Fire/Water based on which starter you chose, unlike the other rivals in the series.
Silver is really a good rival all the time here is the reason: -He is Giovanni son - He is the Green's foster brother( because in Pokemon adventure he always follow Green) - He was one who really fight win against Blue and Red. Green also too. - His goal is KO team rocket and another. - He wants to become stronger is because. He wants to fight win against the God of trainer DaGuan!

I feel like Gladion comes a little close, but other than that, I'd have to agree. :p I can't think of any other rival that has as much depth...

He probably had the chance of becoming the league champion (in HGSS), but they decided not to give him Weavile for some reason.
