The “sixth” member of Pentatonix is Ben Bram. He and all the members of Pentatonix help with the arrangements, but Ben is definitely a very integral member of this process and the group.
In the behind the scenes for this video Kevin said the quick sequenced (as opposed to perfectly synchronized) claps was actually the sound of his rings on a wooden table in the studio. Super cool effect--love how constantly innovative and creative they are.
No way?! That’s super cool!! We love hearing about innovative ways that people have reproduced sounds, that’s great!! Thank you for the insight! Cheers from Wyoming! 🍻
They arrange it themselves with the help of Ben Bram, their producer. Lindsey Stirling collabed with PTX on Radioactive and Papaoutai, a French song that Scott found and loved. That one is a fun, quirky, weird song and video.
They are represented the 5 elements Mitchell is wind, Scott is water, Kristen is fire and Matt and Kevin is earth and Lindsey is magic. 9th is so DRAMATIC I love it.
Kevin also has an electric cello which has a basic outline like Lindsey's electric violin. I saw PTX in concert a few weeks back and they did this song with Lindsey virtually. It was EPIC!!!! IT is supposed to have a "reel" like feel to it. This is from a century old children's poem which has 12 verses! WOW! Ben Bram is their arranger and co-arranger. Ben did most of their arranger when they started 10 years ago, but as time has gone one, they are doing more arranging themselves. The first 2 Grammys they won were also won by Ben Bram for arranging. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch were in ALL the high school choirs together! They went to high school together.
Part of the string motives you are hearing is a medieval Celtic melody-about 1000 years old. The arranging: Typically, when they pick a piece to do, they sit in a circle around a table and jam until they come up with a rough draft they like. Then they go to Ben Bram for the final refinement of the piece. The point is all members of the band are fully involved in the arrangements they perform. By the way, for me as a composer-pianist, I love the motific development you hear at the last portion of the song! Everyone was fire on here, but can we just take a moment to say how hauntingly beautiful Kirstie is in this video?!
Talking about out of the box arrangements, you really should check out Carol of the Bells. One of my favorite arrangements they've done, AND it's a Christmas song, so.... :) Once again, great reaction! Love watching you guys.
I don't care if this is 3 years old. I ALWAYS have to come back and watch this reaction to PTX's "Over The Rainbow", it's one of my top favorites from any set of reacters.
Let this reaction be a warning to you not to skip over a Pentatonix Christmas song because it's a standard carol that you are sick to death of hearing. They always have a few surprises. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is probably the most suggested, but my favorite is "The First Noel"
I not only sang in choir in high school, but I still sing in a community choir. I can’t get enough of Christmas music. Sometimes I’m still singing it in February. LOL
You should check out You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch… Matt is AMAZING with the lead, and 12 Days of Christmas… they do an incredibly creative rendition of it where they all sing, including Kevin!
There is a behind the scenes of the process of recording their album Evergreen. It is impressive how much thought and effort they put into who sings what and the phrasing. It does show them coming up with all the clapping effects for this song. It is definitely worth taking a look!
Avi did do some arrangements, so did Kevin and Scott. Ben Bram who has been with them since the sing off. Scott met him when Scott was in college. But Ben Bram does a lot of their arrangements.
Would love to see you react to Kevin's cover of Down by Marian Hill. It's mind blowing - between the cello boxing and his singing and looping various tracks, it's pretty amazing.
Ben Bram. who helped Scott form the group when he was at USC, has been an arranger and producer since 2011. He found Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola to add to the Trio and was the arranger for two of their three Grammys. Kevin has a cello that is like her violin. The costumes are the four elements earth, wind, water, and fire. Can you guess who is which?
If you want to see how they arrange they released The Recording of Evergreen video. During the shutdown they all learned to arrange while at home. They worked with Ben Bram and 2 other people that showed them how to arrange vocals in a different way so they sound like actual instruments in some of their new original songs such a Coffee in Bed and Be My Eyes. That entire CD has a different vibe and I love it.
Just saw this live last night at their Michigan concert...it was fabulous. They had Lindsey on a screen but Kevin played cello live and Scott played a bit of piano during it....but it was spectacular. If you get a chance to see them live...DO IT! Love the reaction
If you want some real Christmas music check out PTX Silent Night, Little Drummer Boy, Joy to the World, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Noel, Carol Of The Bells and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. You will be amazed by all of them.
Fun reaction guys. Oh yaa!!! my Celtic forefathers are calling to me on this one..a Celtic Reel!!!!! They all represent different elements; Kevin and Lyndsey earth, Matt and Kirstie (watch how she moves) Fire, Mitch air, and Scott is water. Very cool, I mean who could take Over the river and do this to it!! I guess that would be PTX.
Home Free originals; Cold Hard Cash and Christmas Ain’t For the Lonely are must watch! Home Free: Do You Hear What I Hear arranged by Adam Rupp is my favorite vocal cover ever! I finally heard a Home Free concert online, and hearing it live was phenomenal! Thank you for your awesome reactions, Merry Christmas!
Ben Braum has been with them since the Sing Off days. He actually introduced them to Avi. Scott stated for the most part they get together and throw out ideas, get what they like together and send it to Ben, who polishes it. On this one, Kevin said that he and Lindsey went to the recording studio and worked out the ending.
Ben Bram has been their arranger/producer since the beginning. He is who is standing beside them when they won their first Grammy.. he is considered their "6th member"
Oh I feel ya about the choir trudge toward Christmas! Go watch the Pentatonix official version of O Come All Ye Faithful.( We in choir called it Coma ye faithful). It will leave you dancing in your chairs.
This is actually their 3rd collaboration with Lindsey. The first one was Radioactive, which you mentioned. Then they did the French song Papaoutai - just as amazing and performed completely in French. And now this one. :)
as for the visuals of this video - it's based on the elements: Scott is Water, Kirstin is Fire, Mitch is Air, Kevin and Matt are Earth and Lindsey is the magic that connects them all.
In their current concert tour there is an extended instrumental introduction to this song with Kevin on cello and Matt on a big kettle drum. It's epic and dramatic. Kevin's part/melody/composition is expanded beyond what is in this video. He's just incredible. He played a note on his A string where his finger placement was beyond the fingerboard to the area between the bridge and the fingerboard (where the bow also plays). I've never seen anyone play a note off the fingerboard before on any classical stringed instrument. And I used to play viola (eons ago). It never occurred to me you could do that. Try to find a fan video from the concert. It's worth a watch.
They're called harmonics, and if you can nail them they sound great and are fun as hell. But they can be a beast to get the placement just right. A bass can get in the violin range using harmonics.
I was not sure was it was the first time I listened to it! A children's song? I think they did awesome. I look forward to seeing your reaction to Pentatonix/Lindsey S. cover of Radioactive. I love it.
As I understand they are covering the Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Magic. Scott is Water, Mitch is Wind, Kirstie is Fire, Matt and Kevin are Earth and Lindsey is Magic.
Saw PTX in concert last night and they performed this song with Lindsey up on the screen excerpts from the video. Ben Bram has arranged many of their songs. Avi, Kevin, Scott and Matt have also arranged songs.
They do a mini documentary where they show how they record this whole album (Evergreen) in the studio. Even if you guys don’t react to it on the channel…you’ll totally appreciate it!
Some arranging links for PTX: Interview with Ben Bram (on Jacob Restituto's channel): ruclips.net/video/uDcrMGkC1iE/видео.html ; A set of PTX arranging/recording clips: ruclips.net/video/XbxPnbC9vnk/видео.html ; see also the recent video about creating the new album, Evergreen: ruclips.net/video/M60SKKkQLqo/видео.html - mostly recording, but you will see them arranging too, including setting up body percussion for some of the tracks.
Pentatonix is great. I really enjoy their Christmas music. Please make sure to react to Home Free's Do You Hear What I Hear? And Mary Did You Know? Great reaction guys.
Idk if this is more an American thing but I'm in the UK and never heard the children's song before, I didn't know if it was a cover or an original. But the dramatic way they've transformed it into this whole...thing. itxs perfect for Scott whonis always so "Inc the song he just can never keep his hands still, so giving him something specific to do with his hands etc really upped the drama of the song too (adding in to the performance that Lindsey always gives with her playing). I was surprised no one mentioned wtf Mitch was wearing, i can't tell if it's feathers or fur, did he climb into an emu skin or something? Lol.i love Mitch, but sometimes his outfit choices are...interesting. There's a short video somewhere that I saw (maybe on their tik tok, I don't remember) of Kistie trying to get the hang of flinging those braids around the way she wanted them. It showed, what I think was a Beyonce (?) shoot or something where she flips her long braids and they fall perfectly round and over her shoulder, and Kirstie was trying to copy it, with... ot a great deal ofnsuccess at first. Hilarious. It's a killer look for the vid though. Kevin's cello that he uses here is called Beyonce. As for Lindsey's violin, if you've not yet checked out Kevin's channel (K.O.) he has an electric cello that looks equally cool, the structural design is as much functional as it is aesthetic, it allows him to do things he likely would struggle to do on a traditional acoustic cello, as well as the cut in of the body that allows a more comfortable playing position. I recommend watching his KOver of Marion Hill's "Down" as an intro of what he can do to the electric cello, but there's other pieces of his too where he shows he can absolutely slay on that thing. I've seen some interesting cellos and violins though, like where it's literally just the scroll, through neck/fingerboard into the tail piece without the body. Not sure I explained that well, so maybe just Google Stagg electric cello lol. As for violins, there's some really wild looking ones.
I know this comment is almost a year after y'all aired this originally. But... I've seen other reacters react to this. And though they do a fair and sometimes even good job, yours is the best so far. Not just the discussion of 4/4 vs 3/4, swing, etc, but the way you three REACTED to this awesome cover, made my day when I originally saw it. And whenever I'm in a Christmas mood, like today, this is one of the first videos I come back to. Kudos, and thank you again.
I love you insights about the video. I feel it adds to my enjoy of the song. You should check out some of their " behind the scenes" or "BTS" of their videos. I think it would allow different insights.
Yeah, the "celtic" sound reinds one of a Scottish reel, a country dance now usually performed by dancers with bagpipe bands. I like the three of you guys together, it's just a little bit more focused and a tad bit less "aw, shucks."
you should check out a 3 piece band out of Traverse City Michigan called the Accidentals. 2 girls playing all kinds of string instruments and a guy playing varus types of drums. indie music.
the instrumentals are just epic, who would have thought to slow this song down. hoping you get to my request for Through the fire and flames by Tina S.

I agree. Carol of the Bells is great. So is their arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
The live version is fantastic
This arrangement gives me Scottish/Celtic kind of vibes.
💯 Gaelic vibes totally!
Gaelic/Pagan vibes for me.
Since you are fans of PTX arrangements---Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy won them a Grammy for acapella arrangement
I don't care if this is 3 years old.
I ALWAYS have to come back and watch this reaction to PTX's "Over The Rainbow", it's one of my top favorites from any set of reacters.

Written in 1835(?) my Grammie (gr gran) loved this song as did my Nana. Very Celtic sound to me and they both would have loved this. 😎
I not only sang in choir in high school, but I still sing in a community choir. I can’t get enough of Christmas music. Sometimes I’m still singing it in February. LOL

Keep your eyes peeled for next week. 👀👀
The sound feels like an irish folk music!
Carol of the Bells is fabulous as well. Loved this creative recreation of a children's tune.

Your reactions are out of this world your facial expressions are epic
I’ve watched this video about a dozen times and I never get sick of it.
They were representing the elements. Water - Scott, Wind/Air - Mitch, Fire - Kirsten, Earth- Kevin.
And magic Lindsay
Ben Bram. who helped Scott form the group when he was at USC, has been an arranger and producer since 2011. He found Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola to add to the Trio and was the arranger for two of their three Grammys.

Except for Lindsey, she the element of 'magic'!

Ben Bram is their chief producer, and sometimes pitches in with arranging, but they are very much hands on through the process
Just saw this live last night at their Michigan concert...it was fabulous. They had Lindsey on a screen but Kevin played cello live and Scott played a bit of piano during it....but it was spectacular. If you get a chance to see them live...DO IT! Love the reaction
The clap is Kevin hitting his rings on a table. There is a behind the scenes on this video
You will be amazed by all of them.
and lest we forget, 12 Days of Christmas and My Favorite Things. Wonderful interpretations and lots of fun for both
Yes to ALL ! They won a Grammy for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"
You should listen to Pentatonix O Come All Ye Faithful if you want a real upgrade of a Christmas song
Gives me a Celtic vibe.... love this - and Scott is hot in this one.

Loved this! ❤ Great interaction !👍 Enjoying this Christmas 🎄 with you! 🙏Hangovergang ! 🇺🇲
Home Free -- Cold Hard Cash
If you do put Radioactive on the channel, you should also do their other collab with Lindsey, Papatoui. It's all done in French and it's fabulous.
This is actually their 3rd collaboration with Lindsey.
The first one was Radioactive, which you mentioned.
Then they did the French song Papaoutai - just as amazing and performed completely in French.
And now this one. :)

I think Matt is nature, which is different from earth.
The group works together to rough out the basic arrangement, then they turn it over to their invisible sixth member, arranger/producer Ben Bram.
Saw PTX in concert last night and they performed this song with Lindsey up on the screen excerpts from the video. Ben Bram has arranged many of their songs. Avi, Kevin, Scott and Matt have also arranged songs.

ya'll should do PTX Silent Night(Live) classy, beautiful, angelic. and Carol of the Bells is spectacular too
I was getting Disney "Brave" vibe. Sounds Irish to me with the string instruments
The group arranges it themselves.
You need to check out Making Christmas. It’s truly spectacular how they changed and arranged it for the spoken parts to be sung
If you want another fun one that’s very different from the original try PTX’s cover of “O Come All Ye Faithful”. Awesome.
The other collab they did with Lindsey Sterling was Papaoutai. It’s a great video and definitely worth checking out.
I love that video. I also love that Scott sang it in French. Pretty amazing.
check out the making of Evergreen. It shows PTX in the studio recording and arranging
Pentatonix is great. I really enjoy their Christmas music. Please make sure to react to Home Free's Do You Hear What I Hear? And Mary Did You Know? Great reaction guys.
Mitch said they arrange a song very quickly since they have been doing it so long.

I know this comment is almost a year after y'all aired this originally. But... I've seen other reacters react to this. And though they do a fair and sometimes even good job, yours is the best so far. I love you insights about the video. I feel it adds to my enjoy of the song. You should check out some of their " behind the scenes" or "BTS" of their videos. I think it would allow different insights.
A great song to check out to see Lindsay at her finest is Master of Tides. She did a surprise live performance and it's amazing!!!
I read another comment that described Lindsey as the Olympic Violinist. Perfect if you add Gymnastic in there somewhere.
Lindsey is a dancer with a dancer's body. We did not get to see that body in this video, yet I think this is the best she has looked.
Yeah, the "celtic" sound reinds one of a Scottish reel, a country dance now usually performed by dancers with bagpipe bands. I like the three of you guys together, it's just a little bit more focused and a tad bit less "aw, shucks."
Celtic vibes 😀😀😂
Mitch’s coat is made of paper.
O Come all ye Faithful, Sugar Plum Fairy are musts.
Game of Thrones vibe!
I want Carol of the bells.
you should check out a 3 piece band out of Traverse City Michigan called the Accidentals. 2 girls playing all kinds of string instruments and a guy playing varus types of drums. indie music.
Sup fam ✌ I'm here for it! 🔥🔥🔥
Glad to have you, Jared! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
the instrumentals are just epic, who would have thought to slow this song down. hoping you get to my request for Through the fire and flames by Tina S.
Papaoute is the other lindsey collab with pentatonix
You said "somewhere over the rainbow" Guys.... they do "The Wizards of Ahhhs" Kirstie starts that song...
Do the reaction of Kevin´s cover of "Down"!!!!
You guys should check out the O'Keefe Music Foundation. Kids covering metals songs pretty awesome
This style of the song with the visuals, reminds me of some of the videos that Skillet put out which has a lot of electric violins. Give them a try, they've been around for YEARS. I saw them at a conference years ago. Another artist I would suggest, Colm McGuinnes. He does some insane stuff mixing with violin, chello, voice in multiple keys and harmonies. He is great.
Ptx collaboration with Lindsey sterling Radioactive is their best known work and it is excellent. I readily forgive ptx when they break out the cello and violin.
But their collaboration of Papaoutai is very well done and is in all French. Scott doesn't speak French but i dare you to not know that.
you should absolutely check out Lindsey's version of You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch featuring Sabrina Carpenter
Nice one. (That's a pretty good comment from someone that typically doesn't leave them) 👍
Well thank you!
The original song is 6/8 timing they didn't change it at all.
You’re right 🤦🏻🤣
Never heard the song before and was sorely tempted to skip this reaction video. Glad I didn't! Imma go find the original on their channel. Boy! That was really good!
you should react to 'Transcendence Street Jam: Live Music' and 'Master of Tides'. Both by Lindsey Stirling
Each of them represent an element , Scott if water,, Kirstin is fire, Mitch is wind, Kevin is earth and Matt is ???? not sure
Matt nature and Lindsey is Magic
More Celtic
try PTX & Lindsey Sterling's Papaoutai. Get your english-french dictionary out first.
This is a cover of the original arrangement performed by a folk group called The Last Bison. It’s really good apart from the lead singer sounds out of tune. The PTX version took it to the next level though.
Absolutely not first. :-)
The boring/annoying 12 days of Christmas... wow
