  • Tonight we're settling the debate between two of my favorite vintage hybrid synthesizers from the 80's, the Korg DW-8000 and Kawai K3. Today on Guitar Center I found a Kawai K3 for $650 and a Korg DW-8000 for $500 which is pretty incredible for two of my favorite synthesizers.
    Which do YOU think is better? Let me know in the comments below!

    The DW-8000 is very special to me. It was the first synth I ever laid my hands on in the late 80s, and my friend lent it to me for a while. It was amazing, and left a big impact on me. Then after, I bought my own first synth, which was a Poly-800. I was a bit disappointed by that one, and sold it. Then years later, I bought a DW-8000 in full working order, when it was not liked much and I got it for very cheap. Still have it, but I need to repair it as it has no sound anymore.

      Worth repairing. Truly an incredible synth!

    Thanks for hitting us with that Harmonic Minor! My all time favorite key signature. Also Hungarian Minor or some times called double Harmonic can also get pretty dark carnival sounding. Keep rocking on the boards!

    Another fantastic video! I have a K3. Despite people going on about the K3's interface, it's a synth that I have programmed heaps of great sounds on very quickly. If you're into soundscapes and soundtrack stuff, the K3 can do some fabulous stuff. Add a nice delay and reverb and you're set. The filters are superb and the waveforms are interesting. It's also built like a tank and (like other Kawai synths) has a beautiful keybed with aftertouch.

      It's such a special instrument and can do so much more than people think it can.

      Agree, there is something quite magical about it. I've been collecting and programming synths for 25 years and this one still stands out for both its sound and the ease with which you can programme really useful sounds. @@VultureCulture

    Both lovely synths the K3 just edges it for me because it has a sound of it's own.

    Half way through the video I put the ear buds in and wow you can really hear the difference in the analog filters vs the vst synths . What really comes apparent in a lot of these shoots outs is , how much better the Korg synths effects blend into there sounds, than the other manufacturers of synths.

    Behringer may be missing a trick by not cloning the K3. The keyboard version weighs a ton and the rack version goes for a lot.

      Kawai's K3 is an absolute monster, however, I think if you had to have only one the DW is pretty stellar.

    The Kawai K3 was a flop, and not in any popular records. But it's a great sounding and unique synth with analog filters. The K5 and K5000 are also very underrated, I have up selling my K5000W, absolutely nobody wants it! 😅

      @@VultureCulture I have to say that it was your blade runner DW8000 video that pushed into getting the EX8000... I was a huge fan of it from the 80's, but hearing it again in that vid was a great motivation!

    Last week I bought a Korg DS-8, which was the successor to the DW8000. Some say it’s a toy, others it’s every bit as good as the DW8000. I wonder how you would rate it.

    • @VultureCulture
      @VultureCulture  6 месяцев назад

      I *really* want a DS-8, especially in combination with a Hypersynth HCard-101.
      What do you think of the DS-8?

    • @Hwral
      @Hwral 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@VultureCultureMy first impression is that it seems great for bells and e-pianos as is typical for DX7 type FM synths. The factory presets are useless from today’s POV because they’re hilariously unrealistic. But since the DS-8 offers simplified control over FM synthesis, plus a few useful effects it still has potential for creating great evolving pads and otherworldly sci-fi stuff. There’s a great recently designed sound bank for the DS-8 on Synthcloud which proves this is more than just another 4-OP toy.

      Interesting sound tool, FM attempt from Korg to achieve a market space in that category. Less powerful than Yamaha DX7 but probably easier to edit.

    When using the Wavestation as a controller to play the K3 I find the dynamics different. Anyone know, is it the velocity that I need to adjust on the Wavestation? It's not as bright as when I play the K3 keys

    • @VultureCulture
      @VultureCulture  6 месяцев назад

      You'll want to adjust the "velocity response curve" in the global menu of the WS to taste

      I had the same issue using a DX7 as master, maybe because velocity values go from 0 to 99, if memory helps me?
      Maybe You could set a different velocity curve on Your keyboard?
