  • A broken scaphoid is pretty common in mountain bikers.. and it sucks. They're slow to heal, and for such a small bone, you need a massive cast. This is the story of how I broke mine.

yeah just last week I was about to do a rather difficult drop with a very short runup, and my front suspension locked up right when I was about to go over the drop. I landed in the middle of my front tire, the tire bent, and I was scratched up and winded. But other than a broken tire and some scratches I was pretty fine

Dogs are ridiculously fast. I can barely keep up with our little pup when she's going easy. When she sees a squirrel she goes at least twice my maximum sprinting speed. Until she comes to the end of the extending leash, that is.

I immediately clicked this and remember when I was doing a skinny and sketchy tabletop, slid out, and got a hairline fracture on my wrist (6 weeks); the most frustrating thing (warning to Eric) is that even when you get your cast off, it takes several months to get back to the confidence you used to have in your hand; RIP Eric’s hand, very unfortunate

Get well soon... I agree with you that it could have been worse and I'm just glad it wasn't. That trail was super sketch and seeing you just slide down it I knew it had to be like 40% grade, which is no joke. The rock seemed to be like a smooth river rock, which made me think why you were not getting any traction in braking.

I'm right handed as well and when I broke my right collar bone, yes, it was indeed a great difficulty.
The one thing that is never mentioned is how much more difficult wiping is. You've spent your entire life training your right hand and suddenly, you need to use your left? Theoretically, it's easy but there is no muscle memory.
That was the biggest challenge for me.

That’s passenger status. There’s definitely a time and place for snail’s pace, but most times a bit or more momentum is your friend. It’s just understanding how much speed (USING it more often) and how to manage it. (braking control).

The question here is: do you really get so much from these 50m sketchy sections that you're willing to risk months of not riding at all just for a couple of seconds which I would say you don't really enjoy? I personally would prefer to ride all summer accident free and skip these parts totally, life's too short. But hey, that's just me. I'm not a professional, I don't do competitions and I have plenty of opportunities to get outside my confort zone without risking serious injuries.
I speak from experience unfortunately, I too broke 4 bones in my wrist. Since then, f**k these sections, I'm hiking my way around them and enjoy the rest of the 99.99999% of the ride.

As soon as you showed the spot where it was about to happen I could see the wheel sized hole in the dirt. This is almost exactly the same thing that happened to me in Tasmania two years ago, but luckily I didn't break my hand. At least, the doctor didn't say I did... But I couldn't use that hand for two weeks after the accident. I'm surprised you could ride out, I couldn't even hold my grip after I hurt my hand. I was just in a cast like that when i tore my UCL on the inside of my thumb in a crash. 8 weeks. The loss of strength in my wrist from the cast is worse than the the recovery from the tear. Its weak, not flexible, uncomfortable, but healing and getting better every day. Go slow bro. Don't push it too hard. They take a long time to heal.

You've had surprisingly good luck with your scaphoid injuries. I broke the one in my left hand in 2005 while snowmobiling. I went through a snow-covered ditch and a ski caught a rock I couldn't see, and I got tossed over the bars. I landed on my back so it was the impact of my hand against the handlebars that did it. I went to the doctor and they took x-rays and sent me home saying nope, you just sprained your wrist.
A few days later they called and said come back in, they aren't sure anymore. Some other doc looked at the x-ray and insisted there was a hairline fracture. So they sent me to an orthopedist, who frankly, was a real asshole (it was the orth's assistant, not the actual ortho). He put me in a cast for about two weeks, which I hated, though I still managed to go snowmobiling despite the cast. Then they removed it, though I don't remember why. That assistant guy was such a total jerk I just said thanks but no thanks, I'm outta here and left.
Some months later, I remember being on my 4wd quad climbing a hill and remember hitting a rock just right and it snapped the handlebars hard left into my hand again. THAT hurt. I just ignored it and it eventually felt better. BUT, ever since the original impact on the snowmobile, my hand had a dull ache most of the time. When it rained, it got worse. It weird because it ran up my index finger. But I dealt with it since during all this time, I no longer had health insurance.
Fast forward a number of years and I again approached an ortho about it. They did a cat scan. It showed that the scaphoid had snapped in two, but there was no osteonecrosis, so they recommended doing nothing at this time. He said he couldn't guarantee that doing surgery would make it stop hurting, so he said wait until I can't stand it anymore, then come back.
Fast forward a few MORE years and I again approached another ortho about it. The x-ray showed that the two pieces had come back together and were starting to heal, though not optimally. They of course wanted a ton of money and my insurance at the time was so lame that it'd cost me about $6000 out of pocket to do it. So I again said screw it.
And to this day I have a f'd up left wrist. It doesn't affect my life THAT much... yeah it hurts a bit at times, but I've adapted to a slightly limited range and I almost NEVER grip handlebars the "traditional" way anymore; instead, I grasp them as if I didn't have a thumb. It feels better that way and is probably safer. :)

My crash was at 25 mph, awkward take-off, with a really bad landing in some rocks along the trail. My prize, fractured right radius in five pieces, all of which somehow stayed together. Like you, with the adrenaline I was able to get the rest of the way down the mountain and drive home, one handed. Now I am four weeks into recovery. The lucky thing is that while I really bruised up my other hand, I didn't break anything, two broken hands/arms would have really sucked. "Honey, can you come in and wipe my butt for me". Hope you heal up quickly.

Sucks dude. Sorry about the wrist. I'll trade you the wrist for my concussions. ;)

Sorry about your fracture and FOOSH (Fall On Outstretched Hands) injuries are so common. I have always admired your smart and caution approach to features. I was commenting to MTB Alan about wearing protective wrist supports as he had a similar injury. It certainly makes me think about protecting my wrist. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

OMG! SAME EXACT BONE AND WRIST HAPPENED TO ME LAST WEEK! I got six weeks with a cast on too. Not stoked to not be allowed to ride but I need to take a break anyway. Well I guess we can get through it together

Broke my wrist early this year in Kamloops. Same blue cast. Also my right wrist, but it was a burst fracture on my radius bone. Eight weeks, and then a couple extra of light work.
Thankfully, I'm ambidextrous and was already working with my mouse left-handed.
    Happy healing!

Wait wait wait!!!! I think i broke my scaphoid a year ago, but didn't even go to the doctor🥺 cause that time i can't really move my thumb, and my whole arm was hurting cause a dislocated my shoulder, so i thought it was normal😆 I'm from the Philippines and that time i just went to the "manghihilot" which is like a chiropractor and a massager mix together 😅(that's the best way i can explain it) my arm healed 5 or 6 months, I don't know if my scaphoid was broken that time but i don't have much grip cause it hurts🤣 i can still ride a bike but with 1 hand at that time.

Love yours and Yukas channel. After 30 yrs of clipless I’m about to go to flats. I just watched your video on switching over in late 2019. You look really comfortable on them now. How has the transition been and how long did it take to be comfortable on them?? Breaking your dominant wrist is horrible - hope you heal well.

Mountain Biking in the USA is so scetch if you fall of and have to go to hospital that costs tons!

You likely have some non-displaced anterior rib fractures. Pretty much impossible to see on x-ray. It doesn't change clinical management (not something you'd get surgery for) so they don't bother with CT to actually diagnose it. The gimbal mount spreads out the force over a fairly large area (making sternal injury less likely) and is right where we would do chest compressions for CPR - which is probably the most common scenario to see anterior rib fractures. Good luck with the scaphoid healing.

Oyyy, broke my scaphoid 10 years ago long boarding. 10 years and 3 surgeries later Im without my left scaphoid and have a fused hand. Scaphoid fracture is no joke, as you know. Good news is I still ride hard, fused hand and all! Keep your head up and by god do everything possible to ensure that thing heals up. Blood flow is key!

Nursing a left clavicle which happened last week on Burke Mountian. 90% displacement so my skin is tented in that area. It looks gross but could have been a lot worse. Another rider found me and made a temporary sling from a tire tube he had. I laid in the creek for who knows how long before he found me. He made the calls on my cell and soon my Neibour’s and friends helped me down the mountain to a waiting ambulance. A couple of days ago I checked out the bike...not a scratch.Ok a misaligned bar that took 30sec to realign. I want to ride again...right now, but i may have to wait until November. I’ll need a new helmet.

Man, I'm Brazilian, and I also had bad luck in this pandemic. I fractured my collarbone in a very ugly bike accident. I had to operate, plate and 7 screws ... I will probably just ride my bike next year ... this is very sad! Get better for you !!

Yikes. Watching this, I'm now wondering if I broke my wrist a while back. Came up short on a jump and went OTB. It felt like other broken bones I've had, but not quite as bad so I didn't get it checked out. Had a bunch of pain in my wrist, especially around the base of the thumb for a couple of months. Was off the bike for a good few weeks after that.

Hope you feel better soon. Bruised ribs ain't no fun. Happened to me a month or two ago. Misjudged a small jump and landed flat on my torso and wrists. Even though I was only wearing a heart rate monitor (nothing like your gimbal) it was three weeks before I could sleep normally without an extra pillow for support. Luckily, the wrists were only sprained.

Feeling with you Bro. Broke my Shoulder while biking 3 months ago.. Still not back on the bike.. and I will take my time and not rush it.. strength needs to be fully back first. But also good stuff came out of it.. I bought a smart trainer and this will get my fitness trough every winter from now on.. that would otherwise never have happened ;) stay positive dude!!

Feel your pain. I have had avulsion fractures in both wrists. Check out the Mobius X8 wrist brace. A little pricey BUT it got me back on the bike way faster on my second fracture. Has an insane natural feel when your wrist is in extension. The brace is so comfortable it can be worn even after fully healing to help prevent future injuries while going OTB.

I fractured my neck at beginning of summer and have sailed through the healing process. Load up on Vit D3 and K2. Vit D3 draws calcium out from the foods we eat and puts it in our blood. Vit K2 then activates a protein leads the calcium from our blood to our bones and teeth. D3 can lead to a magnesium deficiency so add magnesium to your diet as well. I’m also a huge proponent of earthing ( I swear by it).
