Reminder that this game was made **11 YEARS AGO.** And yet, it is still one of the best games of all time despite all the advancements in video game development. It goes to show just how much love and care Valve puts into ALL of their games. You know, when they make them.
I'm not entirely sure why, but when I read the 11 years ago in quotation marks, immediately read it in the pre recorded messages voice in portal 2.
And the graphics still hold up.

And my almost 20 year old computer (from 2005) can run it like a charm while it struggles with less visually appealing games like Minecraft.
@@c0mpu73rguy My 2015 notebook can run it on high/very high 1080p with trilinear filtering and no AA with a playable frame rate. Most other games can barely run at minimum settings 720p.
My favorite comment from the developers of these games was "Portal was a test. Portal 2 is a GAME."

Portal 1 literally feels like a tutorial compared to 2, even without considering the COOP, the COOP DLC and the infinite test chambers in the PeTI DLC

Fun fact! The smooth jazz joke was one of the first jokes written and stayed pretty much unchanged from the earliest stages of development because everyone, regardless of age, gender, class or culture, found it funny.
"I bet all of you are jealous that I'm playing this for the first time" You have NO IDEA. Before release, the ARG for Portal 2 was HUGE. BIG, even. There were forums everywhere trying to figure out puzzles and secrets and hints from Valve and other games and websites. I distinctly recall a forum thread which revealed some hopeful hints towards the game's release. In the end, it turned out that someone had gotten a hold of the game or the game's files and uploaded the ending of the game before it had ever released. And many of us unlucky fellows watched, intently, the end of the game weeks before the game came out, unaware that we were spoiled until we played it ourself.

@@nutzeeer Tho for community maps note that a lot of the top-RATED ones are pretty crummy because a lot of folks just play whatever’s at the top and give it 5 stars if they complete it, whether or not it was actually challenging. look for specific recommendations.
And make sure to play Portal Stories: Mel, Portal Reloaded, and Aperture Tag.
In my personal opinion Portal 2 has the best script out of any game period. And there is so much extra dialog it is unbelievable. So suggestion: Simply wait sometimes!

Omg the amount of times I thought like “okay awesome now go *through* the portal” in this like five second moment and then you falling in the water was actually hilarious. This game is so good at folding peoples brains into origami until they second guess every answer. Of course you’ve got the Dee Bee Way which is nigh unbeatable 😤

35:22 That's actually a thing you can do. The emancipation grill at the end of the chamber is broken and the chamberlock is full of white walls, so you can use portals to take the companion cube through the exit with you.

Portal 2 has some of the best dialogue I've ever seen in a game, if not the best. GLaDOS and Wheatley are both legendary characters.

Its impressive how many levels he manages to just straight up brute force his way trough. Man never learned to think with portals =(
he seems to just not grasp the concept that HE can go through the portals to change Where he can place portals too well, maybe he's just not considering himself/chell to be a piece of the puzzles?
On the other hand, I appreciate that the game allows the player to think outside the box and actually be able to solve the puzzles in other ways. I wonder if there are crazy speedruns of Portal 1/2 using alternative methods.

Idk, he seemed to have a breakthrough around the 1:00:00 mark! He COULDNT brute force that one.
If you happen to be curious, the devices on Chell's leg are the reason her legs are fine; they're made to protect the user from long falls
Also, gotta say I'm surprised how frequently you manage to avoid carrying the cube with you when doing momentum puzzles; you chucked it on top of the ledge, rather than just carrying it with you when you jump down into the blue portal. I'm not criticizing, I just find it neat that you find methods I never considered (tho you did carry a cube with you in the chamber afterward lol)

The amount of times iv said "oh, right, i can go through portals" while playing this game is embarrassing.
One of the great things that Portal and BotW both share is that there are always multiple ways to solve the puzzles and the game doesn't punish you for not doing it the "right" way.
I played through Portal 1 on commentary mode last week, one of the devs said that they only removed alternate solutions that playtesters found from the early, tutorial chambers because they wanted the players to learn the mechanics before allowing them to break the rules. Later chambers, such as Chamber 14 which can be cleared with just two portals, had any alternative solutions left in for the freedom of the player.
Does Dee not know that the colored lines on the ground actually mean something for the test, connecting things?
I never once saw him use them to figure that out, in this or Portal 1, always testing the button or whatever again.
I also don't think I've seen him read the floor signs.
He also seems to have trouble strafing and aiming, but that might just be because he's not so familiar with PC controls, being a PlayStation guy.
I'm glad to see him thinking more with Portals, though! And _actually_ thinking with them. I like how Portal presents some chambers that force at least a base-level understanding of the mechanics on to the player before they can progress.
Portal is one of those 'once in a lifetime' games that is an absolute masterpiece, Plus GLaDOS and Wheatley are comedic gold!
"Wrong F'ing portal" I mess it up WAY more than 50% of the time.
Here's the thing. This game takes place centuries to thousands of years later but we aren't too sure how much time really passed. So it's been a long time and it's nothing short of a miracle that you survived suspended animation since then. Some of the comics can shed light on how Chell (you) survived all that time in stasis.
Also that was a funny glitch where the turret made you clip through the blue wall.

@@dacomputernerd4096 I'm unsure if you're aware of this but there's an unused voice line from GLaDOS where she says that Chell had been asleep for thousands of years and not only this but the lead writer of the portal games also confirmed this in Portal 2 The Final Hours.

on stream, you mentioned that you hear something when you found the mural at 58:21. you were not imagining it. if you really press up against the mural (not just this one but the others you came across when you got the single portal gun), you'll hear what sounds like someone gibbering nonsensically. you can even hear it slightly in 58:09. first time I played this game I was super unnerved. it's heard more clearly in the track "Ghost of Rattman" in the OST.
also, it'd be cool if you did an extra stream (or just do these after the final boss battle since it shouldn't take that long) to get some secrets and easy achievements that you missed.

I actually have a really funny story from when this game first came out lol. Now at the time, my computer wasn't the best. It was the old family computer that I inherited. When Wheatly came into the room and asked me to say "apple", the computer would Blue Screen the moment I hit the space bar. Every time XD.
Suffice to say: no, I could *NOT* say apple!

The God damned writing in this game is so fucking top notch that i can't think of a game since that even comes remotely close to it. I don't care about graphics (I do, but not in the face of a story so incredibly well written and told).
So incredibly jealous you get to meet Cave Johnson for the first time. This game really outdid the previous one in terms of warping your brain with the tests.

I was hoping you'd play this one next! it's my favourite of the two for a multitude of reasons.
I love these games so much! I can't believe you'd never played them but I'm glad we get to see it happen. I can't wait for the next part to come out! (Also definitely play the Co-op campaign once you've finished the single player one, it's a completely unique set of tests and the story continues from the single player).
I have played this game my whole life (I’m currently 17), so much so that I could probably speedrun it
So when I see you complete puzzles I’m either sarcastically yelling at my screen, cringing or finding out that you could complete puzzles completely differently from how you’re “supposed to” (which just goes to show why this is my favourite game of all time and just an amazing game in general) but my first time playing I also got stuck on that one puzzle so it still feels really relatable for a first timer
I'm 18, i've played this game since its release and i now speedrun it while reciting the lines as they're spoken. I definitely recommend trying to learn the speedrun techniques, it's a whole new game and its so fun.
I am 19 and to be honest portal 2 is still one of my all time favorite games I really hope we get portal 3 and half life 3 in fact they should do an orange box 2 with half life 3 , portal 3, and team fortress 3
The humor in this game is one of my favorite thing in all of video games. "We both said things you're gonna regret" had me laugh like crazy. Glados is the boss as far as sarcasm go
And I love how sometimes we spent a LOOOONG time on a puzzle and when we finally solve it, we're like 'really? That was it? I'm an effing moron'

You're pretty good at the puzzles. Most people I've watched play get stuck a lot more. The solutions are always simple when you know them, and impossible when you don't!
I went to check out your stream vods cos I couldn't wait for the next video, and yeah this is a game that can easily burn out your mental energy and at that point it's no longer fun to continue so taking a break is a good option. It's much longer than the 19 level first game too.

I just found your Portal 1 play-through today (and watched it all at once). I haven't even watched this video yet, but I can already say that if you thought that was good, Portal 2 is going to be one heck of a ride. Despite how much time has passed since it's release, you are in for a treat with this one. I can hardly wait to see what you think at the end of it all.
Fun fact: turrets don't shoot the bullets by exploding their cartridges like normal guns, they push the whole thing out with a piston like an airsoft gun.
In the words of Cave Johnson: it's more bullet per bullet.
