Purchased a new Softail custom back in 07. Shortly after purchased I changed out the dot 4 fluid and replaced it with dot 5 silicone fluid. I like the dot 5 because you don't have to worry about it eating up paint anywhere and it doesn't absorb moisture like the dot 4...
another thing you can do is what i do. buy a cheap turkey baster and use it to suck out the old brake fluid. Its something Ive used for years on my bike and cars, too. Harley manual says to fill to within 1/8" of the top of the reservoir

Easy to watch vid - FYI .. HD recommend varying types of fluid - dependent on model.
