I own one of these and used it for my hobbies over the last 15 years. It's a great hobby or beginner business lathe. It isn't very robust in that the motors won't run forever, I've had to repair them a few times. Other than that it seems to be acceptable for hobby work. This machine seems to be missing the spring item 166 for the Crank Handle Item 163 to manually use the lead screw. I mention this because when you engaged the lead screw auto feed the crank spun. When it has the spring properly installed the crank will not turn. An easy fix but one that should be looked at if your crank handle turns with the lead engaged. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
I had one of these machines about 25 years ago, and they're generally ok for hobby work/learning. They have a HUGE capacity(which can't be utilised effectively, as the swing is FAR too large/machine lacks power and rigidity ie very tall tool-post assembly, excessive vibration, etc. Get the long bed variant with a screwed capstan riser. The mill/drill is ok, but the rigidity leaves lots to be desired, and forget climb milling!!!! I sold mine, three years after I bought it for the same amount that I paid for it, and it was a good tool for learning. BTW this machine sounds horrendously loud!!!
@@JesusHernandez-lv4rx 25yrs ago I paid £1200 for a new machine with standard tooling ,3 & 4 jaw chucks..... Great machines for learning with and should you spend the time increasing the rigidity, then it would be a good machine for small jobbing work - 225mm swing over bed is ideal for brake disc resurfacing, small cylinder head refacing.......
Bilo bi mi veoma drago da imam jednu ovaku mašinu. Međutim, cena je sigurno visoka za moja primawa. Uz mala ulaganja mogao bih da napravim brojna poboljšanja, postala bi savršena mašina.
The reason this puppy is so loud is the fact that the headstock has no oil in it. These machines are all shipped oil free. Oil does wonders when it comes to making those noises go away.
Just an upgraded version of my 20 yo chinese lathe/mill combo with power feed to the cross slide and one extra gear., I've put a 3 phase with VFD on mine to give infinite speed from about 70 to 3000 rpm with electric X and Y axis feeds. The only thing this has is a second motor for the mill. Mine is run from a bevel gear run by a dog clutch off of the main spindle.
Hello little mill with lathe bed cross slide tail stock, we always are a bit leery of these drill press attachments is all. This lathe is far larger then our Levin Lathes, it is nice to see you share what it is and what t can do, thank you. We see the new Smithy machines so this is something we are bit aware of, though we not ever ran one. Thank you for exposing us to this used machine as an option. Lance & Patrick.
Roentgen Geiger: The noise you are hearing comes from simple things like the covers/doors rattling because of the thin sheet metal used for those parts. It is a common noise you will hear on most of these mills/lathes. The Smiths have a slightly different design for those parts which normally results in a quieter machine. We would not sell something like this if the bearings were bad.
@@MISIndustrial I think "out" in the previous comment was meant in the sense of "out of alignment" or "not of proper fit" and not that the bearing is actually worn . No-one expects a brand new machine to have worn bearings but badly fitted or badly specified bearings is not something unheard of.
Never run an open chuck on a lathe. You should at least close them. Does the drill press also work as mill? Looks like a nice litle machine, depending on price.
Yup, maybe some thick grease worked into the acme drive thread may take down the noise enough to be bearable. It looks very dry all over - lube needed all over when sitting or in use!
i bought just the drill press about 40 + years ago still use 2-3 times aweek very good mach. i repaced the chuck a couple light bulbs one belt in 40 yrs (can not complain) all you hear is hum of the motor runing very smooth????????

Those bearings sound hideous - both mill and lathe. Hello do this lathe make all thing you want big or small
Those handles sureley could knock out some unwary machinists...
Since lathe operations and drilling opeations would not be simultaneous, single motor should be adequate.
Is the drill head strictly for drilling, or can you do light milling with it?
These can definitely be used for milling. It is technically a milling head which any milling head can be used as a drill press head as well.
We have one and it does ok for use as a hobby and lite real work and work
Are the dials and feed in decimal or millimeter?
I think that most the noise your hearing is from the guards and the door on the head.
