As for her public speech, I have to agree. Native Americans, at that time, were underrepresented in Hollywood. There was Chief Dan George, Graham Greene, & Lou Diamond Phillips to represent the entire Nation.
The sad part is that she wasn’t even Native American. Her family came forward after her death, stating that she fabricated being Native American because it was more honorable. Her family was of Mexican ancestry.
The sad part about this whole thing is that she wasn’t even a native American. She was faking the identity. Today we celebrate this moment as a wonderful, well spoken, well said and speech about the treatment of the most oppressed minority group in the United States. And quite frankly, it does deserve that particular round of applause. But it’s sad that she was faking it and lying about her own identity for years. I don’t think Marlon Brando knew. I think if he did, he definitely would not have asked her. I think that she probably wasn’t a horrible person deep down and this is one of those things that was, a good action with good motivation coming from a questionable source. I just wish that either she hadn’t faked her identity and this particular historical honor would have gone to somebody who really is native, American, or that she had been honest with him, and hadn’t faked her identity from the beginning, and still given this wonderful speech. otherwise she was right and the booing proved it.
I don't think they were booing her personally, it's the pretentiousness of the situation set up by Marlon. It's a movie award. She was of Mexican descent and had no tribal ties, nor related to any Native American tribes.
You might find the fact of who "Mexicans" are fun as well...
Mexicans are Native American. Most of us are partially related to indigenous roots. I myself am part Raramuri, which is considered Native American because Mexico is part of North America. Native American doesn’t just extend to United States of America especially since The United States didn’t even exist when indigenous people roamed all the land from North America to South America. Also, most Mexico was stolen by the USA (55%) which is now modern day southwestern United States.
Fun fact: the boarder wasn’t always there but you know who was? The natives who are also Mexican and American natives way before but wayyyyy before the boarder cross them but even is she had no connection whatsoever it doesn’t matter because when you fight for other peoples rights, you are also fighting for your own.

🎶TELL IT LIKE IT IS🎶
She was not a native american. She was born Maria Louise Cruz, and although her father was of Mexican descent, he had absolutely no tribal ties dating back to at least the early-to-mid 1800s. Some basic research shows that some of Cruz's distant family *may* have been born in the Pima tribal region of Mexico, but actual tribal members would have been a *minority* at the time. Neither her nor her parents were enrolled members of the Yaqui tribe which she claimed to be a part of.
She was severely mentally ill and spent quite a while in a mental institution. She simply pretended to be a native american and preyed upon people who, during the time period, just did not know any better.
It is sad that most people will not see this. You are correct in your information about her. She was appropriating like Rachel Dolezal.
@@browneyedgirl4637 Yes! Exactly like Dolezal! People were outraged with her, but I'm not sure why Cruz isn't being met with the same fury. Seems like a double standard to me.. 🤷♂️

Brando was not a good person either. IMO it was an attempt at notoriety on both their parts.
Wild that such eloquent and inpactful words came from someone who was a complete and total fraud
An actress acting for the actors at the Oscar's. Can't get any better than that
I think it would have been better if he attended himself and I have recently read that she wasn’t Native American. I could be wrong but I 100% agree with the statement
Who cares if she was not native American. She delivered a message on their behalf.
Because she was exploiting their identity.
Wym? Was Lightfeather like a stage name? Because I have aunties and cousins with that last name who are Native.
still it doesn't justify fabricating a false identity
NA have a huge problem with identity fraud. It's there voice not from central casting. She stealing the right of NA to have their own Icons. She was just an actress trying to get ahead.

You know she lied right?
And now I understand that bit Norm Macdonald did at that comedy awards ceremony
I can't believe people booed like she was literally just the messenger
I'm surprised that the academy continue to post this even after it was revealed that she was a fake, her family even wanted her tribute removed from the Oscars museum
Careers and reputations were put on the line with this phony apology. It was a blowback when she was exposed as a fraud and the exhibit was in place. They panicked for 2 wks then made a statement. "We recognize self-idenfication." So, if you wanna go to Hollywood and self identify as Commanche when your full blooded Irish go for it. Or, they could have taken the honorable way of truth and respect to her family and all Native Americans and admitted they were duped. By a schizophrenic no less. However, they choose to lie and push a fraud. No moral compass.
Because it's still a piece of history, and it was and is still a topic of controversy. Even if she was a fake, the people in the audience did not know that, and still reacted the way they did to her message.
@@mkat8505 don't get me wrong, I agree that the audience didn't respond well when they heard what she had to say. But this situation opened a can worms for me. I won't dwell on it too much as I don't want to start a debate, let alone an argument on it, but I do have mixed feelings about the event itself
The Academy Museum recently took out her Native description/activism of Apache & Yaqui. She's Mexican American but more European. Due to all of the pushback, they changed the wording. Brando asked Sacheen Littlefeather to refuse his award. Then Brando's reasons for his protest since it was never hers. So it's basically a pic of her in a Plains buckskin dress instead of traditional Apache from central casting. An actress playing Indian activist to actors at the Oscar's. Brando was duped. However, President/Director Jacqueline stewart has zero fact-checking skills. They forgot to add Marie Cruz aka Sacheen Littlefeather and drop National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. It doesn't exist. She lied and made it up. Jacqueline Stewart should resign.
@@rozalilu1that's exactly how I feel about the situation, even though Sacheen/Maria had good intentions and her message was an important one, it was still wrong of her to lie and fake her identity. Unfortunately, after the ceremony, the lies didn't stop. She made up stories about her family and her upbringing and the accusations of John Wayne trying to attack her have been disputed. Were they attempts to make people feel sorry for her? Probably, who knows? It's one thing to be an activist, it's another thing to play the victim. If anything, she was misrepresenting Native Americans just as much as Hollywood was.
In my mind, and I think in a lot of people's minds, she took advantage of the situation to make a name for herself and become somebody. If anyone deserves an Oscar for best actor/actress, it's her. She had everybody at the Oscars fooled, including Marlon Brando. He said the purpose of the protest was to give Native Americans a voice during the occupations at Wounded Knee. It takes more than a traditional outfit to prove your nationality. Anybody could've done what she did, with or without traditional dress.
Finally, even though Brando didn't care about winning awards, which I guess is a good attitude to have since that's not all being an actor is about, its still sad to think that he rejected an Oscar he genuinely deserved, not to mention, his last Oscar win ever. Not even the best actors win every single award that exists. He would've been turning in his grave when he learnt the truth. Makes me wonder whether or not he would've done the Oscars differently had he known. When Dick Cavett asked, he said no, but now that we know the truth, he probably would have. Who knows?
But I guess what really baffles me is why did her family wait for so long to break their silence and tell the truth? 50 years is a long time. Then again, they said she created a fantasy for herself and they wanted to respect that, but also in saying that, she was putting her family to shame with all the lies she told.
I know I said I wouldn't go into detail about how I felt because it could cause a debate but you basically summed it up and I couldn't agree with you more. It's rather unfortunate and the more I think about it, the sadder I find it. Talk about a rip-off.
People knew we couldn't go on the way we were. 40 years later. Certain American still appose the truth. When I was a child, this was being WOKE❤
She wasn't even native.. Her own family exposed her as a fraud years after this speech 👍
