  • This week I go chasing Flathead on the sand flats! Despite the recent rain and dirty water, I share the insights that helped get it done.
To get your hands on my hook files, brag mats, Giant Flathead lures and accessories go to mylurebox.com.au
My favourite combo for flathead in the estuaries is
Shimano Zodias 270M and Vanford 3000 with 6-10lb braid and 10-20lb flurocarbon leader.

A great video. Thanks mate. But a caution - never ever try to calculate how much money you’ve spent on all those new lures and gear in the plastic box that you haven’t even opened up yet. It would be one of the silliest things you could ever do.

Can’t wait to throw your soft glide this season for a better class of fish ! Hope you’re brain spiking your flatties for the ice, I just use a sharpened screw driver and a small cutting board even in my yak. More humane and better quality fillet imo.

Thanks for the advice John. Do you debone the flatties before wackin them on your burgers?

Thanks Jon. Awesome as always. Could you please describe the direction of the current so I can understand your advice , especially around the 8min 30 mark. You talk lots about tide and flow but which way is it ? And when you talk about edges, do you mean when the water flows from deep to shallow or the other way around ? In your great drone shots from behind you, is the edge at the change from smooth to rippled water, and are the ripples the deep part or the shallow part ? Just really wanting to understand your great advice mate, thank you :)

Hey mate. It’s a melted down lead weight. About 6kg from the roof cladding special orders at Bunnings. I think I bought 10kg and made a 6 and a 4kg. Did the PPE respirator and melted it in an old pan and poured it heavy and carefully into a bowl with the stainless hook 🪝 wired into place for it to set around.

Thanks Paul. I was casting onto the edge where water was flowing off a flat, and down into a deeper section. The flathead were staging on the deeper edge so I’d toss the lure slightly to the left (the shallow bank on screen) and the fish were underneath the ripple effect made by shallow water hitting the deeper section to the right. Generally I try to fish shallow and bring my lures off the bank and into deeper water. Esp. With the run out tide. That’s the most realistic movement for bait as the bank drains

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain.
If you are ever stuck for ideas, how about a video explaining how current flows cause the surface disturbance and how to interpret what must be underneath ?
Really good videos John. I’ve recommended them to many people. Cheers
