Mine has served me well since I got it in mid 2014. Yes, the 700-degree setting is the best use of this tool. Like you, I don't use the wet pad anymore. I found as long as I use flux, my dirty tip caused no problems. I do jamb it into the brass "Brillo" sometimes to scrape it clean. I clean my completed soldered areas using a Q-tip or brush dipped in lacquer thinner instead of the traditional denatured alcohol.
I hear you brother!… The only thing available when growing up (10 years old) was one of these Weller “gun with two-stage trigger” and it seemed that it had 1 megawatt power with the dual prongs… I learned early on that I needed something a lot “gentler” 😂 I also use a very similar vise all the time… mine’s from Dremel. Great video Mike!
Suggest you throw away the sponge and replace it with a can of Hakko Tip Tinner Paste (part no FS-100-01). I use double sided tape to hold the can in place. When you dip a hot tip into this paste, it applies a coat of tin on it to keep the tip in top condition when not being used.
Great video Mike. I love my Hakko FX-888D.. like yourself I had cheaper ones when I first got licensed but they all died, The Hakko is just amazing. 73 M0OVG
These look like great soldering irons. I'll have to see if I can find a version for sale in ZL! Thank you for the review, I am using a horrible pen and need to upgrade.
This is nice if its the only one you get. But it can’t decided if its a bench unit or portable. If you have the money get a full station with a desoldering tool and hot air gun. Then a hand held unit or butane. Love the butane ones! You can adjust the flame so it acts like a hot air gun for shrink tubbing. Plus you can carry them up a tower.
The Milwaukee battery soldering Iron is a great tool, been soldering for decades and its much better than all of those gas irons you can get, even the expensive Gas Wellers. For hot air, well you can use the tip to shrink it iout, or in the workshop you should have a hot air soldeirng gun like Atten model. Problem with gas irons, I have had a couple blow up in my face because I pressed too hard on the tip, seperating tank from head, also they expel hot air from the sides which if you are not careful can burn you or components. Nope, stay clear of gas soldering irons!
As HAKO is a land mark TS-100 does not step behind. Try to use that station to solder antenna connector in the field or make some fixtures in the field day.
The Microcenter special. I work on microelectronics and this thing is amazing. For those who are ragging on him for reviewing a soldering iron, if you aren't soldering in your HAM activities, you are paying too much. Cry some more.
Pay a little bit more and get it from a certified hako distributor . You’ll get a longer warranty vs Amazon is only like 30 days. And possible fakes on Amazon if you read the reviews. That’s what I did no bs . Make sure you buy extra tips in different sizes and tip runners for storage. If you have extra dough buy the weller that costs a bit more. It has a better core for raven constant heat distribution.
Your intro music always scares the crap out of me Mike!😮 It seems to be a great soldering station bit I wish they made a non-toy looking version and colouring.🤷♂️😄
It sort of does hah. But that’s what I like about it. I don’t have kids, so no worries there. I’ve always just thought it looked “fun in a Japanese kinda way .” I finally got one last week. It does not mess around. I should have grabbed one way back in time. I wasted lots of $ being cheap. Also wasted many pcb’s because I didn’t have proper heat transfer. All of a sudden I’m a desoldering master haha. Also there is a lock-out code you can program apparently. It’s just perfect for me, and I find soldering really fun now.. It does “the thing” I’m not a shill I swear. I’m just passing it along!
No worries. Just hoping to straighten out your worries about your child. One more thing not in the video. You can get the same station in silver if you want. I haven’t see it, but maybe more your style. Cheers
Good to have a reference for tools we use in our hobby. But bruh... is this a ham radio channel or a product review channel? These days propagation is insane, yesterday I worked New Zealand using a x5105 and a qrpguys efhw deployed at a park, at night. I'd like to watch you hunting some great DX with the insanely good radios and antennas you have. 73s
This is definitely within the ham radio wheelhouse. A lot of hams are builders as well, and having reviews like this help find good products to spend our hard earned money on. If you don't care for the video, don't watch it. There are a ton of ham tubers out there, I'm sure one uploaded something you approve of recently for you to watch instead.
Soldering and ham radio literally go hand in hand. How do you think I made half of those great antennas I have? I'll give you a hint, it's with solder.
You say you moved down here to Texas boy? We all say Y'all in the Lone Star State. There are 1,000,000 Yankees & WWW's moving here every year!!!!!!!!!! When in Rome, do as the Romans. I am getting culture shock in my own country sometimes. The Republic of Texas that is. 🤠
I've got one, had it several years. Fantastic....best soldering that I have ever had. I've been home project soldering for more than 70 years.
Very cool!

I have a Hakko and love it. The best soldering tool that I've ever had.
Picked one up at the Fort Wayne, IN hamfest last fall. My soldering skills improved by a ton immediately.
Ok. Tip about the heat shrink on the helping hand is a good one. Going to fix mine up now
Awesome. Glad to help.

Great video Mike!
OMG those things are terrible. I've never been able to solder anything with those lol!
I have this station works like a champ for me and my needs.
The Hakko gets it done. A temperature controlled iron changes the game. The Hakko 888D is the one I recommend to people who want to get a decent iron.

Been working with a 35 watt iron from lowes which is not cutting it for me. So I am now ordering this soldering station. Good video.
Glad I could help

Great video, seems like a great soldering station
Great video Mike, just got my station as well.
Nice 👍
ugh, why would they not design this with a temp knob and switch for celsius/Fahrenheit? waaaay too much screwing around to change the temp
Hi Mike,
Used the links to buy the Kester flux and the needle tip bottles. Stay safe and have a fun Field Day. 73 WJ3U
Awesome. May your solder flow smoothly!
This dude kind of reminds me of one of my favorite comedians Big Jay Oakerson.
I didn't know what to make of the brass scrubby tip cleaners until I used one. Never going back to water and a sponge.
These look like great soldering irons. I'll have to see if I can find a version for sale in ZL! Thank you for the review, I am using a horrible pen and need to upgrade.
Just make sure you hold it from the handle and not the metal parts 🤣

I have the same one and it is great!
Thanks Mike I’m been looking at soldering stations for myself. And I will definitely check that one out thanks for the video.

You bet
These work great for guitars?
As HAKO is a land mark TS-100 does not step behind. Try to use that station to solder antenna connector in the field or make some fixtures in the field day.
Yeah I already did all of that.
About 1.25 fengs high, and 3.5 fengs thick?
Yeah, I'd say that's about right lol
Wooooo!
This is a decent iron for the price but the FX-951 is the way to go.
7:00 is that a "no clean" type of flux
Thanks
Hey thanks so much, I appreciate the tip!
Auto sleep auto time settings available in fx88d??????
AWSOME 💯👍🙋♂️🍻
Thanks 👍
You've been paying attention to the Japanese pronunciation of Hakko :)

Solder something!
Please Explain calibration procedure
It just looks like a kids toy to me. Throws me off. I would be afraid my toddler would think its a Hasbro toy

As someone who works in electronic manufacturing I appreciate the way it looks since it doesn't remind me of my job when I have it on my desk.
@@147woofs fair point. I have 6 kids and it looks like their toys to me. It is fantastic don't get me wrong just...
Solder iron gun process
I returned mine and went back to my $20 one. Maybe I would also feel differently if I got mine for free.
I'm pretty sure "Soddering " means something different in UK/Australia... lol
Yeah I do love my lawn care!

Ham radio was once about improving, expanding communications. Kit building. Now just about contesting and rag chewing. I think it list its way.
