    • @guildguitars6349
      @guildguitars6349 9 месяцев назад

      Here are his 2023 stats before his injury:
      Opponent C/A % Y/C TD INT
      Clemson 9-4 17/34 50% 5.1 0 0
      Lafayette 9-3 20/21 95.2% 12.1 2 0
      Nthwstn 8-5 15/20 75% 11.0 0 0
      Connect. 3-9 13/28 46.4. 4.1 0 0
      ND 10-3 12/27 44.4%. 5.0 1 1
      Total: 77/130 59.2% 7.9 3 1
      Omitting Lafayette (1AA - Patriot League)
      57/119 C/A
      47.9% C%
      6.4 Y/ C
      1 TD
      1 INT
      Leonard was most productive as a runner, but ND needs a QB who can throw, not another running back.
      Compare that with Angeli’s stats:
      34/44 C/A
      77.6 C%
      11.5 Y/C
      7 TD
      1 INT
      And while Leonard probably has the rushing edge (when healthy), Angeli is a more than capable runner who also throws very accurately, both short and long. With Leonard, defenses will simply take away the short pass and contain him, and he will then be almost completely ineffective. My opinion may be the minority opinion, but Angeli is a much better all-around option, and bringing in Leonard (as a starter) was a huge mistake. As a backup, that is a different story. Leonard is much more one dimensional, and as a strong runner he can manage a game very effectively given ND’s stout defense.
      Leonard’s prior projections as a first round pick are wildly off base. He can extend the play and even get some yards with his feet, but he simply doesn’t have the arm yet. That certainly could change, but based on this season before his injury, he is nowhere near the first round. He kind of reminds me of Tim Tebow: an athletic player who can run, but can’t throw particularly well. I think he can be successful at the next level, but not as a quarterback. He will most likely need to change positions. And that is exactly the player that Notre Dame should not be relying upon at QB next season.

    • @PapaSmurf216
      @PapaSmurf216 9 месяцев назад

      The same folks grading him as a first round pick probably graded Zach Wilson as a first round pick as well

    • @guildguitars6349
      @guildguitars6349 9 месяцев назад

      You do realize that less than 25% of all first round QB’s in the last 15 years were considered very successful, and that only about 37% had a positive impact on the game? What about the other 63%? Busts! Just because some analyst or RUclipsr mentions a player as a potential first round pick doesn’t make it true. The reality is that while he had a good 2022 season in terms of overall production, he declined considerably in 2023. Sure, he was injured at the very end of the ND game, but he had 5 healthy games before getting hurt. During those games he had less than a 63% completion percentage, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. And that C% includes a game against a 1AA Patriot League team in which he completed 100% of his passes. Remove that game and he was only at about 58%. Definitely not ND caliber, and certainly not NFL first round caliber either, especially given the massive drop off in production Fromm 22 to 23.
      As for his size, he is 6’4”, Angeli is 6’2”, and Hartman 6’1”. As for weight, they are all listed at 212.
      The bottom line is that to bring in a QB from the portal that has a strong resume, and who is clearly at his best is one thing, but Leonard had a poor season by any measure, and is not even in the same universe as Angeli in terms of throwing skills. To say otherwise is to ignore the actual stats.

      @Luigi22Green maybe with a way better offensive line and recievers that he had at Duke (a team way less talented than Notre Dame), he can do better than Hartman. He is far more athletic and is way less afraid to run than Sammy. It showed that when he got hurt, he really was the lifeblood of the team. And with him not having played since Louisville, that gives him ample time to recover. And BTW, if we go 9-3 with a schedule that manageable, I may as well root for some MAC team 🤣! @Luigi22Green 9-3 disapointing? Nah. ND has been one of the most consistent programs in the nation over the last few years. Haven't lost more than 5 games since 2016. Are we near the level we were back in the 70s and 80s. No. But look at other programs that were once at the top of college football, like Miami and Nebraska. Unlike Notre Dame, they have been unable to maintain some level of stability and to stay relevant in college football. And even then, it's only some ND fans who make us look ungrateful for a good season just because we're not in the playoff, or even natty. I'm just glad to be relevant. We have a chance to get double digit wins with a bowl win. Only one team out of 133 can win the natty. Only 12 will have a shot by next season. You can't always be winning natties and making the playoff. Georgia just proved that. Of course, I'd love to see ND win a natty next year. Will that happen, likely no. Playoff? Possibly. I can guarantee you that in my lifetime, ND will win a natty. Not saying when, just some point. For all I know, I could be 100% wrong about Leonard by the end of it. It's not like I wasn't glad that Hartman gave us a chance in this last year. I personally just see more potential in Riley. But no matter what, I'm just glad that we're still relevant at the end of it all. Go Irish

      The 2024 playoffs will consist of 12 teams (not 4 teams). As a fan I don't know much about Leonard but I trust the judgement of the ND coaching staff - and the ability of OC Mike Denbrock to get the most out of Leonard. Leonard was pretty good overall in 2022, but then declined dramatically in 2023, telling me that his experience is a non-factor. He was hurt after ND, but until that point against four D1 opponents he was about 58% completion percentage with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, and his stats against ND were 44% completion percentage, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Where in his healthy stats for 2023 do you see even a hint of evidence that he should peak with ND next season? He is a decent runner, but so is Angeli, and they weigh the same. There is no comparison at all between their arms as Angeli is a considerably better thrower of the ball. The reality is that if Angeli had to come into a game late and needed a score to win, he is very capable of slinging it all over the field, and is also capable of running effectively as well. Leonard is capable of running, but that is it. Based on the data, Angeli gives ND considerably better odds of getting to and winning a NC, but unfortunately the odds are in favor of Leonard starting as the coaching staff and university are more financially vested in him than in Angeli. I
      Hope I’m wrong about that, but time will tell

      @@DCSk8er529 all true, but his stats prior to the ND game, aside from the 1AA Lafayette game, were mostly very weak and one dimensional, and were nowhere near ND caliber stats. And as long as we are being fair, Steve Angeli did everything asked of him all season, then completely balled out in the bowl game when given his shot. He also has multiple years of eligibility remaining while RL has just one. Given ND’s relatively weak schedule this year (on paper), it still makes much more sense to go with Angeli, who should be able to get ND to the playoffs at least as easily as Leonard, but who will then provide continuity at the QB position going forward, with two more studs coming in over the next two seasons.
      ND already made their bed with this one, so it’s a moot point. The only hope now is that the new OC will come in and ignore the NiL monies going to Leonard, and will conduct an honest and fair competition. If he does that I am confident Angeli will be behind center in week 1.

I think he’s got a lot of character and his devotion to the program was great. Now the bad…Unfortunately, he looks small out there. For being a fairly accurate passer he had this uncanny knack of throwing the ball into the back of his linemens head or the defenders hands. You never really felt like he would win the game for you and was more of a game manager. I’m willing to eat my words though if he’s fixed those problems in the last 2 years and he actually looked good when he came in to the games in the 4th quarter during blowouts. Leonard is a good runner with a great arm, which is why he was getting 1st round buzz prior to his injury against us.

      @@SuperSparrow45I agree with what you’ve said, however I’d said Leonard is a great runner with a good arm instead of the inverse. The can still develop his arm, but you can’t teach 6’4 and 4.5 speed.
      People in these comments are slandering him, but Leonard is easily one of the most athletic QBs in all of CFB. If he plays well at ND, he’s going first round for sure.
      I think Leonard has crazy untapped potential, if I was an NFL gm I’d be all over him in next year’s draft. His athletic profile is truly intriguing.

    Yup, Leonard is a good quarterback , but I don't think he's elite or significantly better than Sam Fartman. 💯 I guess we're doing better on quarterbacks than before , now we can buy the ACC's quarterbacks instead of being stuck with people like Buckner. 💯 Leonard will get us in the Pinstripe Bowl or the Sun Bowl , that's for sure. 💯 GO IRISH !!!!!! 💯🍀🍀🍀

      Depends if we pick up a few more of the top tier talent in this portal, like safety, maybe O.T. another top tier W.R. 1 exp, l. Backer too.

      It was less about Hartman and more that he had no WR's to throw to. It got to the point where ND was rotating in a true freshman, another true freshman, a converted RB and a true-freshman walk-on LAX player at receiver. Oh, and their #1 TE got hurt halfway through the season.

      I think I do, we want a veteran qb but not one too good to scare our younger qbs into transferring. Think freemen wants him there an option in case neither qb is ready. Freemen probably doesn’t was two transfer qbs starting in his three years at Norte Dame
