* UPDATE * Deity reached out to us on Twitter and showed us how to secure the microphone cable into the grooves of the cold shoe mount. Doing this solves the excessive noise problem from the Deity D4 Duo microphone.
I understand there is a newer version of it thst came out in Dec/21 as well which has more plush dead cats to help with wind. Problem is they don’t label them such as a V2 so you don’t know what your going to get when ordering 😢
Thank you so much for this video! I just got the Deity mic, and your video is SO helpful in teaching me how to use it. Very clear, informative, it is helping me understand how to edit the sound and avoid some pitfalls.
Thanks for making these videos. I watch all of your gopro videos and now watching your mic comparison videos. I made this channel for my 7 year old son (to make his RUclips dreams come true). It’s all outdoors stuff (mostly fishing) and I only use my GoPro hero 9. I am always behind the camera filming him and I talk too so I have been looking for a multidirectional? Mic. I just ordered a d4 duo for myself for Christmas along with a media mod. The fact that the other one has all the audio together on one channel actually sounds really good to me because I am new at all of this and I do all the editing on my phone on the splice app. I’m nervous about learning how to edit the audio. Sounds complicated. I guess I’ll have to get a laptop and learn more in depth editing.
Overall the Saramonic is our favorite 2-person mic system. Very curious about the Pro version, but probably won't be buying it since we just got the regular Blink500.
@@Gemini_Connect im in thr same boat with the pro version, it looks interesting and id love to give it a try, but the blink kit does what i want so theres really no need to buy another kit.
Thank you for this! Super informative and got me thinking about things I didn’t even consider lol the saramonic pro looks like a really cool solution to capture sound, might have to save up for it
With my Gopro Hero 8 i use Comica Boomx D2 with 2 wiresless mics and it cost approx 200$ dollar, it also records in mono or stereo plus you get upto +12 levels of db gain, it also has a small screen which displays battery level and wireless signal strength, and most important you can also monitor audio through headphone jack.
Great review, looks like the Saramonic Blink 500 Pro is going to be 299. Seems like as far as GoPro goes they could help with some of the problem by moving the audio input meters to the front screen. Depending on how the Saromonic Pro reviews come back that feels like it will be the best solution for me.
Agreed! If we hadn't bought this original Saramonic Blink, we'd definitely get the Pro version. Someone else also mentioned the Comica Boom XU -- 2 mic wireless system with interface at $249! Crazy to see all of these alternatives popping up now.
Hi, Suzi! Which pole are you currently using? In a previous video, I remember you mentioning that it’s not a GoPro branded one, but I don’t remember which video it is so that I can go back and look! You said it was your favorite one at the time.
Hi Mark, great to question. My favorite GoPro grip right now is the Insta360 selfie stick. Super solid and well made, extends to become taller, and pretty affordable - www.amazon.com/dp/B084P4BCL8?tag=geminiconne0c-20
The Rode Wireless Go is really really great. We've had it for almost 2 years now and it's never failed or had a problem. It's not the best solution if you need to record audio from 2 people, but for 1 person, it's solid.
@@Gemini_Connect The Røde solution to record audio from two persons is to use two Røde GOs connected to the camera with a splitter cable. So there really is no problem. Just get a 2nd GO system.
Both microphones look really good, although I think I'd be more partial to the Deity D4 Duo. One big plus is that it can be used with both the GoPro & smartphones. As for the wobbling noise with it, is it possible to try using it in a different shock mount to see if that alleviates the issue? Thanks again for sharing.
I definitely like the Deity D4 in theory -- it's more straightforward and reliable than using a wireless mic system. A different shock mount could indeed help. The trick is finding one that's the right size since it has to be an exact fit. Will keep investigating!
@@MrSteviej893 I wish -- would make things easier, lol. From what I've seen of our shotgun and cardioid mics, the shock mounts custom-fit each mic. There's a chance the Rode Video Micro mount fits the Deity since they're so close in size. I'll give that a try.
Great review. I love the D4, I haven't had the noise you showed in the 5 weeks I've used it. Do you think maybe the cable was hitting/rubbing the plastic shock absorber? Also I use standard mic audio then boost volume in post, maybe the 20 db boost using + added to noise if it was the cable rubbing. Also I have the rode go, but for those on a budget the "pixel wireless lav mic" is basically the same thing for $100 on amazon, its slightly bigger but the sound is good on it.
Thanks Marty! I don't think it was the cable hitting the Deity -- we tested several times and really couldn't pinpoint the exact problem, other than needing to be more mindful and hold the camera more steady. But we'll keep on testing and see what happens. Other than that, I LOVE the input feature and being able to use the Rode Wireless Go with it. Such a great little mic.
@@Gemini_Connect Interesting. I haven't had to use the dead cats really yet, so also no need to use a riser yet as well. As you know the more you add the more you have to trouble shoot lol. And at the end of the day it could very well just be the handling as you suspect. I'm glad you like it though, I found it very innovative and a great value. BTW my wife is a technology teacher here in So Cal (so lots of virtual teaching now) and loved your Desk video, she bought half the items you showed after watching the video lol.
@@lestat964 I've seen some other folks saying the windscreens weren't the most effective on the Deity. I didn't find it to be a problem, but just a heads up if you do use it in windy conditions. @@Gemini_Connect good to know on the wind screens, I should probably take it to the beach and test is out before having to rely on it blind. But forb$30 more then a rode its quite nice. Again great video as always!
Hi Geminis! Thanks for your great videos and reviews! I’m looking for a 2 person wireless microphone system (we happen to be two geminis 😃 in our show) to use with a GoPro (probably getting a hero9) as a webcam. Will you you be doing a comparison of the Saramonic Blink 500Pro with two Rode wireless Go mics? Still trying to find the best solution. Most of the time we livestream exercise on Zoom and mostly indoors, but once in a while we stream from parks and backyards, etc. One issue we’ve come across is interference when we get too close to each other when we are filming, or that Zoom won’t recognize both mics on aggregate midi...What you two do now is very much the setup that I think would work for us geminis! Thank you so much for your input and reviews!
We haven't figured out how to use 2 mics with the Rode Wireless Go (it ends up being expensive and complicated). We currently have two 2-person wireless mics that we're testing: Comica BoomX-U and the Saramonic Blink500 Pro. Will be making videos about these new mic systems soon!
Thank you! I want to get some thing to help with the wind sounds on my gopros I just don't know what to get. Sometimes I wouldn't mind having duel wireless mics so I can hear myself and someone else like my friend or my wife that I'm walking with. Other times I want to just have wind sound protection in general while walking. Oh well, I'll keep thinking about it. Atleast I learned more about what's out there! Thank you =) Aloha =)
That Deity D4 Duo and also the well known Rode VideoMic Go are designed to be able to wobble without picking up that ticking sound. The Rycote suspension dampens user noise. However, I suspect that yellow cable or the cover of the input ticks against the suspension if the mic wobbles back and forth. So the purpose of that design is still good but the cable input is close on the suspension. Put some furry in between :)
I notice that a lot of Rode mics wobble too, but none pick up that extra noise. Your theory about the location of the mic input/output causing the noise makes sense. That area gets especially overloaded if you add a lav mic. Thanks Dennis!
Do the Deity D4 Duo front-facing and rear-facing microphones have the same recording quality? Wondering if there are situations where you might want to mount it backwards.
Nice video...I recently bought the D4 and was trying to use with Hero 9.
