    Put all that lot in a sealed container with a hole in the lid, I use an old plastic paint tub. Inside fix an old vacuum cleaner hose or washing machine waste pipe hose on the inside of the container going from the bottom next to the fish to the top. Drill a hole and fit the pipe thru it and straight into the top of a bait tub then the maggots crawl up the pipe when they finish eating and crawl into the bait tub so you don't have to separate anything just unfasten the bait tub and put another lid on and your done. Clean the system out and put more fish in it and away you go again. Cuts down on the time handling the waste and messing about with rotting carcasses. I keep fish and use the maggots for angling sometimes, they're a great source of protein for fish. Thanks for the video and taking the time mate.

    My dad thought me a old trick, do basically what this man is doing and grow some yourself. Fill a onion sack with the same meat at the same time and suspend in a tree over the river. The ones over the river drop gradually in and the big trout gather underneath. When your batch is ready so is the river. Put one on a hook and the head to the river. You’ll fill a bag with trout in a hour. Not very sporting but it’s ridiculously effective

    We used to make sour milk "specials" using a mixture of bran and milk and follow the same method to get a blow, we used to use these as a hook bait on the canals as they seemed softer plus has not got the erm fragrance of the fish method.

  • @sherbert500
    @sherbert500 8 лет назад +2

    we always used to "make" our own maggots as kids simply because we couldn't afford to buy them, we used to use any old shellfish for the eggs like crab claws or shells or prawn peelings anything like that then just put them on top of leftovers that were in a wooden box with a removable bottom, once the maggots were of size we would get a bucket then remove the bottom of the box so the maggots would then fall through the griddle wire into the bucket onto sawdust, best maggots you will ever use because they still have that natural smell unlike the processed rubbish sold in the shops now!

    • @jeffhill1966
      @jeffhill1966 5 лет назад +1

      I usually leave mine for a couple of days to get the blows. Then cover it. Because if it keeps getting blows, all the maggots will be of different sizes. Then it will be about 5 days for the maggots to come. But I think you should feed it once or twice, before you collect the mags. Please note this is the way I do it. Don't shout and swear at me. It works for me, but it does depend on the temperature. Obviously summer is the best. But i have done it until probably October. And then I have started again in May. As I say it's just my personal opinion..... cheers.

    Graeme, how would you go about colouring the maggots? I would love to have red maggots for my tench fishing, but they're illegal to buy here in Germany (I expect probably something to do with toxicity ^^). I've tried sprinkling normal food colouring into shop bought maggots, but I'm sure it needs to be while they're feeding. Do you reckon it would be enough just to sprinkle the powdered colouring over the meat? Cheers.

    Have you considered using Black Soldier Fly larvae? Put an over ripe banana (or apple, etc.) in the bottom of a five gallon bucket and cover with several inches of leaves so that houseflies cannot get to it. Houseflies lay their eggs on the food source. Black soldier flies lay their eggs on top of the leaves and the larvae will crawl down to the food source. Soldier fly larvae are bigger and better. Plus, if they somehow finish their life cycle, you have benign soldier flies.

      If you buy them from your local tackle shop they should tell you how long they will keep in your own fridge. Maybe a week or so would be average. But if kept in a warm place they can turn into casters in a day.

    nice vid upload...i used to do this thing years ago..so i dont know if anyone watching this vid or reading the posts on here know exactly which fly lays which eggs..so heres what i found, if i remember it rightly (if ive not please forgive me it was a long time ago) ..number 1..your normal common or garden house fly..maggots from these flies will produce squatts...number two.. the greenfly..these flies will produce pinkies, lastly number 3.. the bluebottle, these will produce your bigger maggots, if its only these maggots you really need or want , take out the meat or what ever youve used to get the fly eggs on, and carefully flick of all of the small eggs..there you have it..i used to take way over a week to produce maggots we called gozzers..these were big jucy, ripe baits that we caught a hell of a lot of good fish on .. last a WARNING just take care for the smell !!! ..its damned awful..so just be well warned about it .. i hope this comment helps you all to catch bigger and better fish over the years to come..tight lines..

    Flour also works to keep it dry and keep the maggots from climbing.
