Simon from Roland Corp Australia runs us through the new Roland TD-15KV Vdrums drum kit. For more information or to purchase please head to www.kosmic.com.au
Man! They've come a long way from when electronic kits first started! 'Back in the day', (I'm talking 1980), when I had an 11 pc Tama, (acoustic, of course), but I would go to a local Guitar Shop and mess around on their electronic kits. They were just starting to get attention and gain a little momentum in the drum world. The Voice controls were big and required at least 3 components that were best dealt with in a portable, rack-mount. When I really started considering an electronic kit instead of my acoustic set, I realized that the setup and transport was just as tedious as moving my 11 pc Tama around from place to place. For a while, I triggered some of the drums on my kit but in the end, I guess I just liked the 'powerful look' of an acoustic set on a well lit stage with the light reflecting off all the chrome. I mean, try and picture Alex VanHalen on a 5 pc Roland... Oh sure, he had electronics mixed in with the acoustic kit but 100% electronics? That seemed like too much of a "Talking Heads" style, (not that the Talking Heads weren't good, 'cause they were). It didn't seem to fit the Rhythm & Blues, and a lot of the Rock and Country mix that I played most often. I started playing drums when I was 7 years old, (55 years ago), and now when I see a kit like this Roland, I think; "yeah, this would be cool to have in the house just to play through my headphones and maybe a small amp once in a while". I stopped playing about 8 or 10 years ago, and I've regretted it ever since. It kept me in shape and was a great way to burn off a 'bad day'. So this Roland may be a great way to get some of it back. FWIW, Rich
emilshere.......I was the same way, and still am from time to time. I have a V-drums kit. I don't practice nearly as much as I thought I would. But the true exhilaration and fun comes out when you combine an e-kit with a Jamhub and have your guitar friends over for a jam. Then it becomes amazing.
@ emilshere, i guess it is because the audio of this video is really a very nice quality that you can hear the every inch of the details of the sound especially the cymballs not to mention that the guy endorser is really good drummer...
Just got one of these. Well the ks. Its amazing. Very good for recording. If Ur still not satisfied with the sound. Many drum programs out there. But i don't use any myself.
Nice review.. do you get the cross stick sound on the cheaper version of the kit and does the hi-hat work of a foot pedal if its attached to the frame..please would you let me know ..cheers
Hi there, the cross stick function is on all versions of the TD15 and TD11 kits (you can turn it on or off as well). I don't get what you mean about the hi-hat pedal? Did you want to clamp a hi-hat stand to the rack? Let us know and I'll try to help you out. Cheers, Sam Pettit.
have you actually used them in a live situation?...the tuning and muffling features with the behaviour modelling and ambience, and the improved triggering speed makes the new roland kits finally good enough for live playing, however I still use regular cymbals..i don't care how many zones the cymbal pads have, they still suck...best practice tool ever invented though.
A vert strange and Amazing thing happens. When I watch these videos I get very excited and I start to want these vdrum kits... but when I sit behind one in person and actually play it, I become very uninspired and quickly realize I dont really like the way these things sound or feel. Then I watch these videos and get interested again... start to doubt what I felt, and go back to the music store and play them again, and get disappointed again, and its an endless cycle......
Almost all the features as on the TD20's. Still I don't think the actual sounds are any good fex the different snare and tom sounds their own. and the feel in the "mesh heads"are more like small garden trampolin. Great for practice though. Great presentation.
WHY would anyone play anything else than a Roland? Sure, they're expensive as hell but think of what 'bang' you get for your bucks! I've got to save some money...I want this or the new one, the TD-25.
WHY would anyone pay at least twice as much for the Roland kit when at every price level they can get a kit with far more features and, most importantly, not deal with a company that takes you for a sucker just because they can get away with it?
These Super Natural technology don´t impressed me really, Superior Drummer 2.0 now also can provide 3 sound in a single pad with velocity control. Nothing fancy for me.
I gotta say, I tried this kit out yesterday, and wasn't at all impressed. The sounds didn't seem as natural as Yamaha ones (probably because Yamaha use real samples from their acoustics), and I'm someone who plays acoustic at least 3-4 times a week, crappy £200 electronic kit the rest of the time. Just my opinion, although I didn't really get to know the module, so that could be part of it. just my 2 pence...
I think the main misconception many Drummers make is an expectation to match the real kit, even though it barely resembles one! 2 or 3 response types is laughable compared to how a real cymbol/drum reacts! And you have to learn to play in an entirely different way, with a more conceptual approach. When you start a Track, one's intentions should never be about "creating a good sound", but rather "to create the song that's in your head". The good sound will develope. Persevereance is key though.
Pretty much all snare sounds in that module sound horrible. Same for the crashes. One would think that you would have like 20 great snares and crashes in a v-drum module. I mean come on. Slight buyers remorse over here.
Well, I think a standard 5 piece kit shouldnt be more than a grand. Considering how cheap it is to make the pads and piezos, it's a bit over priced for what it is. If it had more drums and cymbals it would be worth it
The cheaper kits aren't great though. £800+ for a tiny, compact 5 piece kit, not mesh heads and only two cymbals. For the same price as their low end kits you could buy an alesis DM10X 6 piece full mesh head kit with 3 cymbals and it's full size, with many more kits in the brain. Roland are overpriced for what they are.
drummerdude did u seriously compare an Alesis kit to Roland??? thats like comparing a toyota corolla to a ferrari......Alesis is shit compared to the kits Roland make, besides Roland is a bigger name in e-drums and better overall build quality for the difference in price range. you get what you pay for........judging by your comment, your more about quantity than quality.
Yes yes yes, you've just made the case that a Corolla is a shit car when it may be the single most popular--and reliable--and cost effective--car ever built. Exactly what I'd expect from a Roland fanboy. If you're a Formula 1 driver, no comparison. But for most people, the Corolla--and the Alesis--is a far better deal. Good God, I'm ashamed to admit it but drummers are idiots.
Roland has ALWAYS pissed me off on the psycho way they assign model names . Theres NOT a GOD damn thing you can tell from the model . Lets translate THIS shit TD-15KV BUT what the fuck is the difference to a TD-15K ? What is the "15" pieces, size ? Alesis is a bit more logical . the DM10X = 10 pieces 1-snare 4 toms 1 Bass 1 HH 3 Cymbals and they ad MESH to the description. NOT ROLAND. . it is like a cold war code. I have spent 3 days calling around and the phone reps can not figure this out. This is a marketing fuck up. So what is the latest "feature" on the pads "MESH" ? SHOVE AN "M" Make the model number 10 characters long . Go to the website and you still don't have a clue. How cool if you used the web UI clicked on features and it built the model? Total cost MAYBE $10K Sales increase and sale time decreased BTW - i WAS going for the Alesis DM X Mesh Kit , for no other reason that I KNEW what I'd get BUT ..... I called an old friend VP at a very famous Music store in NY and he insisted. DO NOT GET NEAR THE ALESIS Three months time life. i REALLY trust this guy 30 years in the biz and he'll give me the Roland for the same price as the ALESIS so theres got to be something there. I have not even seen either one but my first Roland lasted 10 years without farting. So if a sales VP is willing to sell me (ok we ARE buds) Roland at COST (they also sell Alesis) There may be a GOOD reason why Roland is so fucking expensive.
As always a great presentation from Roland!

awesome review bud thanks. very informative yet concise.
Amazing! I'm ordering this!
Really interesting Digi-kit but I'd have to try it myself to see if it'd hold up. Thanks for the video.

Great vid same drum I am getting
Just got one of these. Well the ks. Its amazing. Very good for recording. If Ur still not satisfied with the sound. Many drum programs out there. But i don't use any myself.
one inch ride cymbal was neat. and ride with rivets is great. god please let me get this module soon. lol .
Thanks for the detailed demo. Are the quick record, playback & coach functions also available on the td30?
thanks :D

hey does it have kits like melodious and neo type ???
Is it possible to replace the computer of the TD9KX2 to the TD15 ?
How many extra pad inputs does the module have?
does this kit have the machine gun roll problem?
yes
check out this guys td30kv video, its amazing how similar it sounds to real drums
Yea but you can adjust every piece for the exact sound you want. Why use theirs when you can create your own?
But the playback and click quietly was great, like an powerclick, this is useful.
Nice Demo! Thanks!

This guy looks like the vocalist off of guitar hero
what is the difference between td15k and td15kv?
Özgün Karaman. K has mesh snare and rubber pads for the rest. KV has mesh fully.
ThatPerthFan nope. Kv has better rack, better hi hat, better pads.
Problem with the Roland Modules is that they overfill it with techno and electronic kits and sounds rather than good acoustic ones.

yes, but better versions

Daryl Dixon? :O

UMMMM you misunderstood me... I am a drummer and I have "learned drums".

Shame it's so overpriced

Definitely at the top end of electric drums that's for sure. Love them. I'm just saying, for a 5 piece - it's a lot! :)
