Here is a quick yet thorough summary of the books Cory stated in this video. Thank you Cory for sharing your most-used books when teaching the piano to students.
---*Sight-reading and Harmony by BachScholar (Dr. Cory Hall).*
EXCELLENT FOR SIGHT-READING. His own book that has been a big success since he made it available.
---*The Piano Bench of Easy Classical Music by Amy Appleby.*
EXCELLENT FOR SIGHT-READING. Simplified classical piano music.
---*J. S. Bach. Short Preludes and Fugues.*
He has an Urtext edition by Schott but any Urtext edition will do.
HIS FAVORITE OF ALL. They do sound very nice. But they are not all great preludes. Intermediate level.
    ---*J. S. Bach. French Suites.*
    He has a Peters edition.
    J. S. Bach. French Suites. The Alfred Edition. He does not like the Alfred Editions of books. He recommends buying any Urtext editions (Henle, etc.).
THEY ARE THE LEAST DIFFICULT. IT IS FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL.
    ---*J. S. Bach. Two-part inventions.*
He mentioned it at the end saying that he should have mentioned it.
They are more difficult than the French Suites.
---He does not mention the following titles because they are more difficult than the French Suites.
    --*The Well-Tempered Clavier, J. S. Bach.*
    --*Six Partitas, J. S. Bach.*
--*The English Suites, J. S. Bach.* Very long. More for advanced pianists.
---*Clementi Sonatinas for the Piano, Op. 36, 37, 38.*
He has a Schirmer edition and it is fine for Clementi but do not use Schirmer for other composers.
HE SAYS IT IS AN ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE BOOK. It should be played by all piano students at some time. THEY ARE ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECES FOR BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE LEVEL PIANO STUDENTS.
The pieces for Op. 36 are by progressive order of difficulty.
    ---*Kuhlau. Complete Sonatinas.*
Schirmer edition where he shows some of them being very hard to read so choose a different edition.
Roughly the same difficulty than the Clementi Sonatinas.
    More for advanced students.
    ---*Mendelson, Songs without words.*
He has a Schirmer edition that is fine for this book.
    Good fingerings too.
THEY ARE EXCELLENT PIECES BUT THEY ARE INTERMEDIATE THROUGH ADVANCED PIECES.
    ---*Chopin Mazurkas for the piano.*
He has a Schirmer Edition that is fine for these pieces.
NOT THE OTHER MORE FAMOUS PIECES LIKE NOCTURNES, ETC. BECAUSE THESE MAZURKAS ARE EASIER TO PLAY.
It is his go-to for Chopin.
AROUND A DOZEN THAT ARE NOT TOO DIFFICULT AND THAT ARE SHORT. He uses them with his students.
GRADE 4 OR GRADE 5 FOR THE EASIEST ONES.
---*Burgmuller. 25 Easy and Progressive Studies, Op. 100 for the piano.*
He has a Schirmer Edition; he says it is fine for these pieces.
He has recorded all of them.
THEY ARE PROGRESSIVE PIECES FROM THE EASIEST TO THE MOST DIFFICULT PIECE.
A MUST BOOK FOR ALL PIANISTS.
---*Grieg Complete Lyric Pieces for Piano.*
He has a Schirmer edition that he says is fine for these pieces.
Grieg was a composer for shorter pieces. They are excellent for piano students who want to venture out and do some things that are not played as much as other material.
IT IS A GOLD MINE OF GREAT, BEAUTIFUL PIECES.
Good for more difficult sight-reading pieces.
---He says he must have left out other titles but *it is his most-used books for the piano, especially when he teaches the piano.*

This Henle edition is also in English. You have several other editions for this title Mikrokosmos by Béla Bartók.

Thank you so much for your music recommendations Mr. Hall. Your channel has been very helpful and inspiring. I must say that I would not be playing Ragtime and Classical if I had not listened to your performances. Even though I already have piano lessons here in Iowa, I still hope to meet you in person someday. May God bless you and your family, have a wonderful day!
    Sincerely yours,
    Lane Watson

The Alfred books are very clearly printed black on white and the music is well spaced out. This is excellent for people whose eyesight is not as good as it was and for people starting off into some of the more difficult pieces as it doesnt look so daunting on the page, plenty of room to write your fingering and the excellent paper quality stands up well to erasure and rewriting. Pencil shows up clearly too. Even the covers are more friendly and inviting, less intimidating. I have various versions of most of the ones Cory has recommended here, picked up from music sales of second hand music/house clearances etc.
Had not thought of Grieg lyric pieces that's a nice suggstion, thank you Cory. I had read that the Bach French Suites were approachable and am still struggling with some of the Preludes and Inventions so I am encouraged to take a look at those and try some for some "light relief" shall I say.
    Great overview Cory, thank you.

Hi Cory. A nice update to the youtube presentation from years ago on "must have" piano music. Particularly glad you included the "Piano Bench of EASY classical music" - perhaps that "one of my students" was me???? When my left hand is back in commission in 4 weeks or so, I'll look forward to taking up some of your recommendations! Thank you for being such a GREAT instructor and a good overall person too! • @BachScholar
      @BachScholar  5 месяцев назад +10

I will make a separate video on that topic because it requires a complete video. There are some Alfred Editions I like, and these are generally the ones that do not heavily edit and do not have the gray lines and written out ornaments all over the place. I would estimate 80% of the ornamentation suggestions are just flat out wrong in Alfred Editions. In the case of the French Suites, almost all the ornamentation suggestions are wrong or are physically impossible when played up to speed. Why do they show and explain Bach's table of ornaments in the preface, yet they write all the ornaments out incorrectly to contradict Bach's table? Also, several ornaments are added which Bach never indicated. Also, the excessive footnotes are a huge annoyance because nobody ever reads them and they stretch two-page pieces into 3 or 4 page pieces with awkward page turns. Take a Two-Part Invention, for example. They should all be two pages to eliminate page turns, yet Alfred litters it up with gray lines, footnotes, incorrect ornamentation, and stretches them out to three pages. Footnotes, gray lines, etc. bog the student down with too much information. The intent is to make their editions instructional for students, but this backfires the way they do it.

Thank you this was very helpful. I bought your sight reading book a few years back but i couldn't make it through. There was just so much. By any chance do u have a video on youtube that briefly goes over how to approach using the book ?

    • @BachScholar

The book is not meant to be used from cover to cover. There is enough information in this book for a lifetime. This is like expecting to read and comprehend the entire Bible in one week. If you join WRP there are over 1000 videos on this book. I don't understand how people buy my sight-reading book and expect to go through it in a couple weeks or something. This is impossible.

@@BachScholar thanks for the response. I actually wasn't trying to cover it in a week. I was mainly just trying to figure out the best way to approach it as it a massive book (you said it best... lifetime worth of material!!). Happy to hear there are videos. I will register amd check them out. Thank you.

Czerny is best for this. Playing Czerny makes Chopin. And Mozart and Beethoven easier and better. School of Velocity and Finger dexterity. Play them as fast as you can without mistakes and follow the fingerings. They are beautiful 2 to 5 page pieces. Hidden in them are lessons you learn without noticing you learning a lesson. If only the rest of life was so easy.

My opinion is absolutely not. Im a piano student and my teacher urges me to let her know what pieces i’d like to learn from the offered repertoire. Otherwise, in her experience, the learning process is hindered and motivation to learn is lost. Im currently learning on schirmer’s first lessons in bach and im loving it!

I think it's best to stick to pieces the student likes, however, the length of the piece matters as does the level of the student.
