That was a very good recovery tutorial for all viewers. You studied the obstacle and prepared before proceeding, then checked all the boxes after the hang up...STOP, take your time, think, set up, safety checks, go, stop, rethink, add winch, reset mats, go again, etc. Nice job!
Funny how some of these simplest Videos are some or your best. The on-air instructions are a great education tool for those who are learning. This was also a great example of showing how difficult mud can be, even when fairly level with experienced overlanders in a capable vehicle.
Your wife is an awesome driver ,it helps that your both so calm in them situations also having the right equipment this is a great video for people thinking of driving in the wild ,stay safe 🏴🏴
I have watched just about every video y'all have put out here. It sure makes me wish I didn't have my HD Ultra Classic bike. I retired 10/31/19 and plan on lots & lots, & lots of traveling. Makes me want to change vehicles and get off the path I'm going to take. Love what you post!!!
Oh wow. Another beautiful hike and video. We would love to check out Texas one day. Thank you so much for your tips on the hiking poles. I am definitely going to look into buying a pair that you recommended. Safe travels. Looking forward to your next video.
I love the video content here, it's what keeps me coming back. The "Video" content, not that hideous ear clawing music that you refuse to get away from.
Wow. Pucker factor was definitely high on that trail. However, it was cool to watch how y'all got into the groove of planning and communicating to get yourselves safely through the obstacles. Plus, Sarah's hair looked great this episode. Love the shoulder length :)
Thank you for everything you folks do, very inspiring. we are waiting for updates on your portable base camp issues but understand not being able to discuss anything yet. Sure hope everything works out for your family with it, It sure does make us angry how you were all hurt by them.
Mrs Hooker and i took that exact trail on Sunday. Got to that spot and said "somebody had fun". It had dried but I did have to get out and take a look at my line prior to making it through. Once we got to lost tank it was pretty smooth salin...
Put it in second/ Mom's at the wheel/ Watch her grind through/ Flying up the hill/ Easy as cake/ The tires did work/ Mom handled it well/ The steering wheel did not jerk/ Trails are ahead/ The camp's insight/ The mud now dried/ Time to rest tonight/
That's funny ran into the same issue on cooks peak north of Deming NM last weekend . A little snow and some mud turns an easy 2wd trail when dry to a complicated mess when muddy
You done good bringing your family with today's tech into a land of time and history. Same words probably spoken to someone else with a covered wagon, two mules and a horse. Bet snowballs were tossed about then as well!
Hey , Your videos are great! Ilive in the Andes Mts of Peru and have experienced similar but a bit more scary descending a mountain road from 13,500 ft wet clay with a drop off of what we refer to as a 20 roller , the Tires I had were the BFG MTR but filled up quickly with clay. The locals that run cars down these mountains just let it roll and keep moving the steering wheel back and forth to try and slow it down! . Now running with a Landrover Defender w/ KM3. I feel much safer but also pray for protection always!
The biggest factor, IMO, in that "sliding off the trail" was the anchor that you were dragging down the trail, not the lack of MT tires. I had a similar experience with my own trailer of getting bogged in a situation that "didn't seem like much" as well. Trailers are cool and much of the time you may not even notice they're there until you are in a traction-limited situation.
I run Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my 2014 Power Wagon and love them, they are a hybrid type and give me the best of both worlds, with very little increased road noise and fairly good mileage. Everyone has an opinion, much easier to keep them cleaned out than the KO2s, but ya might wanna give 'em a look see... Keep up the great vids and may all your travels be safe.
I think it is time for some good old mud tires, but they will still slide on you sometimes too! It will definitely look more aggressive. Good luck and happy trails.
Pretty much, once the treads are caked up its going to slide off that trail just the same. Can not get enough wheel speed on that off camber slope to clear the tread.
Hi there from India and I have been watching your channel for quite some time I must really tell that you and your family rock at the journeys you take .... I am a lil jealous actually 😝........ but the videos are amazing and keep up at whatever you do
Sometimes no matter what tire you have doesn't matter, once went for ride to the Ruby Mts Nevada went up the north side in 2 wd had to get out in the mud lock the hubs to go down the south side was interesting to have to gas it to go down
My JLU Wrangler came with mud tires new. I can't wait to get rid of them. If 70% of your driving, or more, is on the pavement, you won't like the ride or noise...
Went down there last weekend, hit East Mesa trail it was great and stayed in boca campground , what trails did you hit just so I can hit them as well much love from Clovis N.M.
If you decide to upgrade to the KM3's on your 4Runner - could you do a decibel test before and after? You can just use your phone from within the 4Runner going down the road at normal driving speed.
Excellent 4x4 piloting, Sarah! You had to get a little nervous when the front end came off the ground. I have the 2nd gen BFG KO 2"s on my Tacoma & they do tend to gum up when you get the right consistency of mud. They are some darn fine all-around tires, though! A quick, off subject ? Do you have any sort of heater that ducts heat up to the RTT when it gets very cold? Didn't know if you had a diesel fueled heater or something similar. Thanks guys, and continued safe travels and blessings!
Challenges & Overcoming them make it interesting and fun! Get's that heart rate pump'n alittle and refamiliarizing with recovery gear. When's the last time you had to use your winch?
I went with an in between... goodyear wrangler duratracs.. theyre available in C-load, or E-load ratings, and varying sizes.. they have excelltn wear characteristics, theyre fairly quiet onroad, and have excellent outer tread lugs for mud, and close siping for wet conditions. I have not had a single complaint other than low traction on ice, but then again, nothing does well on ICE... dry traction is great, wet traction is great, wear rating is to over 40k miles. they will chunk/scar on hard rock climbing, but hold up well. and look great on my tacoma.
You could try the Comforser CF3000 mud tyres. They are about half the price of the top brands. I read every review & watched every video available on them at the time & they seemed worth a try so I bought a set. Seem to grip very well in mud & grass. Drove some muddy hills & reasonably steep grassy slopes to test them in 2WD & was very surprised by the excellent grip. Had the truck loaded up as well. The standard tyre size on the 04 Rodeo is 245x70R16. I went with a 265x75x16 for a little more height & diameter. Mine have a bit less grip on wet bitumen so I need to leave a bit more room for braking. One reason for less wet grip is the bigger tyre, but I also think the tyre compound is a bit harder.
I've been meandering through your old videos, mainly the trip to Alaska. You were getting close to Alaska and mentioned that the ham radio traffic was sparse up there. Did you use your radio's APRS function on that trip? If so how was the coverage in Canada and Alaska? What did Canada charge you for bringing your shotgun through, and how hard was it to do? You mentioned that you might talk later in more detail about your experience at the border but I didn't notice that you did after that. Did I miss it? If not it might be a good topic for your podcast. It would be nice to have some detail on the whole process from regular stuff to anything extra that having the trailer/gun/etc. led to. Thanks.
I doubt any road tire would have stopped that slide. Maybe get a set of good tractor tires with big nubs may have helped. When I used to get in clay mud the only thing that seemed to help is tire chains with the big claw on them. It would dig down in the mud to the frozen ground underneath. I ran them on the trailer I had so it would not slide sideways and pull the truck. They worked well but to get them tight on the tire I would deflate most of the way then put the chains on tight, then pump some air in the tire till they got tighter. Never lost a chain or slid with them, but they will make a mess and be muddy. Video was way to short, did you make it to camp at night or did the posse get ya??
Your video documentation is really great. As far as your setup, I do see some improvements. First on your recovery. I personally feel it's awkward and difficult when winching to control the whole situation when the driver is not doing the actual winching. I think the copilot 99% of the time should hook up the winch and do spotting. The driver should do brake gas and winching. Throttle and brake and winch and steering control all at the same time takes some practice as a offroad driver, but once the skill is learned recoveries will be smoother/safer, and more successful. It's good you let her drive the challenging areas, her skill will grow nd she probably has more fun too. As far as tires, I would first stick with your all terrains, however I would install some double bead lock wheels. This will allow you to air down a great deal more and get more biting edges on the ground. Going from say for example 15 psi, to 6 to 8 psi will about double the contact patch. The increase in traction offroad will be significant. You will need to install a big steering cooler though. My 2 cents.
Yeah if you run into greasy mud like that on a regular basis, mud tires might be for you. As you know, wheel speed is so important in mud. Your daughter is adorable. She reminds me of my granddaughter.
Wow... you loose your grip with your tailer!! Shold be carefull! But I wonder if you change the tire of your car than you should change trailer’s tire too??
What do you think? Time for some KM3's or...?
That's what I was going to suggest a set of KM-3's
Great tires. They start cupping quick if you have any suspension issues
Regulators!
Toyo M/T ?
Milestar Patagonia
this is one of the only good overland videos I have come across in a while. lots of motivation.
That was a very good recovery tutorial for all viewers. You studied the obstacle and prepared before proceeding, then checked all the boxes after the hang up...STOP, take your time, think, set up, safety checks, go, stop, rethink, add winch, reset mats, go again, etc. Nice job!
she's smart, she doesn't want to miss ;) what a great story and wonderful family! thanks for sharing!!!
I've been watching all your videos, can't wait to do my own camping and alaskan trip
Biggest fan from Kenya.
Your daughter is very well educated, first video of your I’ve watched and and impressed. Great work!
This video is awesome. I miss traveling. I teared up at the end.
Thanks guys you always put a smile on my face. Sometimes when I’ve really needed them. 💕
This is WHY we need a winch on our new 4Runner!
:) Fun video!
Funny how some of these simplest Videos are some or your best. The on-air instructions are a great education tool for those who are learning. This was also a great example of showing how difficult mud can be, even when fairly level with experienced overlanders in a capable vehicle.
Been away for a while. Really missed these outstanding videos. Thank you for sharing them.
Your wife is an awesome driver ,it helps that your both so calm in them situations also having the right equipment this is a great video for people thinking of driving in the wild ,stay safe 🏴🏴
Great episode thank you for sharing your adventures.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Airing Down Time = Family Time. We always have a nice little family time while airing up or down - fun to see it's universal.
AMAZING video. LOVE LOVE LOVE NM! NM, I love you! And much love to you and your fam. Stay healthy. Stay T4r
I love the video content here, it's what keeps me coming back. The "Video" content, not that hideous ear clawing music that you refuse to get away from.
Keep it up! You guys are one of the few family overlanders here on YT and please never stop making vids!
Great job Y'all . Whee Haw !! Your Forunner is a Beast !!
Wow. Pucker factor was definitely high on that trail. However, it was cool to watch how y'all got into the groove of planning and communicating to get yourselves safely through the obstacles. Plus, Sarah's hair looked great this episode. Love the shoulder length :)
We had a lot of fun on this one. Yes, she looks awesome with all lengths of hair 👍 I met her when it was this short 😁
Thank you for your videos they are an absolute inspiration!!
Being from New Mexico the mud here is fun! Man I love watching your videos I sit at work bored to death sometimes and your videos get me through it!
Really enjoyed this video. Sara did some great driving and you have lots of patience out on the trail. Great team work.
Lots of fun guys!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love seeing you involve the family!
Thank you for everything you folks do, very inspiring. we are waiting for updates on your portable base camp issues but understand not being able to discuss anything yet. Sure hope everything works out for your family with it, It sure does make us angry how you were all hurt by them.
Took a week, but Im finally caught up on all your videos. Great stuff, thats just good for the soul!
Mrs Hooker and i took that exact trail on Sunday. Got to that spot and said "somebody had fun". It had dried but I did have to get out and take a look at my line prior to making it through. Once we got to lost tank it was pretty smooth salin...
Haha! We sure did!
My favourite overlanding from my armchair weekly adventure... some tricky action and wow what awesome scenery!
Caroline was spot on with those tracks, she remembered her time in Alaska, which is really impressive.
This has been a very good and enjoyable series.
Another great video. Can't wait for the other half!
Thanks, Stephen!
Beautiful area can't wait to explore it more love the Fort
Yes! We will be covering some of Fort Stanton in the future too!
@@LifestyleOverland awesome. Have you ever been during the reenactments? I've never been able to go when they have them so might be my goal this year

Great team work!. Thanks for sharing. Ill be on that trail in August
Mama can drive! Nice teamwork on the recovery too. Good episode.
I'm hearing Bon Jovi..Dead or Alive..Nice teamwork there. Catch ya'll out there!!
Haha! If only it wasn't copyrighted! Thanks for watching!
That's funny ran into the same issue on cooks peak north of Deming NM last weekend . A little snow and some mud turns an easy 2wd trail when dry to a complicated mess when muddy
I would go for round ones with rubber. It's the driver not the tires . Great videos as always. Love New Mexico. Home sweet home.
Good on you picking up that can! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Your wife handled that slide like a boss! Could've been worse. Great video!
Well done... Definitely learning more about desert Mudd!! Looks like 1" of Mudd on top of hard pack. Safe travels, Perry
Oof. I puckered there when the trailer slid. Got flashbacks from my trailer sliding last spring!
We actually discussed the similarity of the situation. More speed would have been bad.
Nice family adventure !
Great use of the recovery gear!
Well no fuckin shit. It's called recovery gear for a reason🤦♂️
Got in some mud like that outside of Boulder, UT years ago. Was flying off my tires for an hour after hitting pavement.
Showing off the drone skills! Milestar Patagonia’s are pretty nice for tires too 🤙🏾
Thanks!
Don't remember the last time I didn't skip through any video on yt haha great watch!
You done good bringing your family with today's tech into a land of time and history. Same words probably spoken to someone else with a covered wagon, two mules and a horse. Bet snowballs were tossed about then as well!
Good luck finding a tire that will work in that slime.
Great job!
What is the latest on the RV you guys bought?
Had no idea you lived so close to me, that’s awesome to see a fellow Tennessean living the good life. I’m in Cleveland (Bradley Co)
Madisonville (Monroe Co) here! I like seeing the TN plates on their GX and Silver vs the New Mexico
👍 great vidio. Lockers are worth every penny.
My first time watching your channel and was like, "Man you put alot of time in recording and good editing." Awesome channel!!
Really Really good stuff! I'm not sure how much the KM3s would help in that slippery snot. But no harm in giving them a shot :). Safe travels.
that's some *awesome* drone/intro footage on this video! well done!

One of your best videos...great recovery tips. After seeing that rattle snake, I’d be concerned getting out of Silver walking ahead and around
Great video.
Ever looked in to some hybrids? I've got Cooper STMaxxs and really like them.
My brother runs them and has really liked them!
cant wait to see where camp is next week!
the Mrs did a great job getting thru those ruts

Wife and I just went through that stuff today in the Jemez with my Ram 1500. It’s a tricky mess!!!

Yeah, the grease/mud is hard to grip in with anything lol!
Pretty much, once the treads are caked up its going to slide off that trail just the same. Can not get enough wheel speed on that off camber slope to clear the tread.
I have NEVER completed a mud excursion that clean sir. You need to go back and try that again....

Kudos to Sarah, driving in slippery conditions requires finesse.
My JLU Wrangler came with mud tires new. I can't wait to get rid of them. If 70% of your driving, or more, is on the pavement, you won't like the ride or noise...
Mamma bear is an offroad driving beast!!!!
Again..loved the your video!!
Went down there last weekend, hit East Mesa trail it was great and stayed in boca campground , what trails did you hit just so I can hit them as well much love from Clovis N.M.
I slid into a ditch the other day haha spring mud is brutal!

It's been a while. We really don't get stuck often 😉 This was a fun little challenge
I can't recommend enough Cooper ST Maxx hybrids, great tyre on and off road. Great footage as per usual. Greetings from Europe.

At 4:44 minutes, the Turtleback seems to have changed from Orange to tan. ???
Did you see the "2016" text?
Had to watch it again to catch the “2016”. Wow. Has it been three years??
You could try the Comforser CF3000 mud tyres. They are about half the price of the top brands. Also, I couldn't recommend the KM3s any higher, I love them on my ZR2 ant they are an absolutely great tire all around
How do you find these great places to travel ?
I’m loving my new Maxxis razors.
Those look like great tires!
Fun stuff 👍
That new Mexico mud, slipperyier than a felon with warrants.
it's only fair to get KM3's to match the GX!!! if not KM3, what would be your second choice?
Probably some Coopers
I doubt any road tire would have stopped that slide. Maybe get a set of good tractor tires with big nubs may have helped. That kinda mud is some special mud when its dry its like concrete , but wet its like ice.But its some fun stuff.
Love the music...that's what keeps me coming back....:-)
Glad you liked it!
