- Caprice No. 24 in a minor for solo violin by Niccolo Paganini (arranged for solo viola by Raby/Preucil in d minor)
I attempted this piece for the first time 3 years ago. After practicing it (on and off) for about a year and a half, I finally feel some satisfaction with my performance. Obviously it's not perfect and I had to modify it in both small and large ways in order for it to sound decent on viola. However, I do feel that I have prioritized the spirit of the piece as a virtuosic yet expressive work that seems to overcome a struggle from beginning to end. In my opinion, the viola's imperfections as an instrument contribute to this spirit and enhance the darkness present in the piece.
Also, some parts do sound really epic on viola...
(On the topic of Twoset Violin's recent video, hopefully no company claims that this is their recording--but we'll see. It was written more than 200 years ago and this is obviously my own playing!) Видеоклипы
Everybody sees violin and viola as enemies but I see them as allies.
After all they are in the same section, why would they be against eachother
the octaves sound so much better on viola 🤩🤩🤩
Everything sounds better on Viola.

Bout to send this to the person who called me dumb for having a viola. Sit back and eat some popcorn.
I am used to hearing this on violin and slightly more high pitched due to TwoSet, but damn does it sound absolutely glorious on the Viola.
Long live Violas!
Finally a non-toxic Twosetter when it comes to the topic of violas
I love how musical you make this sound. So often people play like it's just a bunch of exercises. Your viola sings all the way through.
congratulations James, you have a natural elegance in your technique, even from a very hard piece like that 👏
Thanks! Learning it forced my technique to improve as well
After years of electric guitar i discovered that the viola in an untamable beast, she grins, roar, scream. It's very hard to make it sound good. It's unbelievable how you make it sing.
Viola gang apart you're a great musician, you own a warm heart.
Keep on practice an LEAD US TO VICTORY! FOR THE VIOLA GANG! FOR THE KING!!!
That left hand pizzicato sounds so cool 3:09
It always shocks me how big the viola looks in one's hands. Even as I'm playing it. Great work fellow violist.
Hello. Thanks for a VIOLA interpretation! I avoided this video because I was afraid of another mash up of notes played with disregard for the process of SOUNDING a viola. NOPE - You played it wonderfully and within bounds of producing a great sound on the Viola Bravo!! I only use Paganini as study material but I am inspired to now to give a whole piece a try.
Bravissimo!!! Amazing performance by our viola king 👑 👏🏾👏🏾
That pizzicato part was so good
I think this is the first time I've seen you make so many faces while playing, or maybe just the first time I noticed with the close up camera and changing angles.
I noticed too when I was editing HAHA. That’s probably because this is the most I’ve ever had to concentrate for a piece
I recently started watching a ton of twoset violin again lately, and on top of that, I also came across your channel! I played viola for a good 11 years, and I realized how much I want to start playing again. :)
Thank you for your viola interpretation of this famous piece. It really sounds different on the viola!
This sounds amazing on the viola! Yet another great performance of yours!
Never heard you like this before. It's really great to hear
Wonderful performance, man.
Keep it up!
Long life to the viola king!!!
😼❤️
YESSS VIOLA POWER!!!! Such a wonderful performance!! 😍
It requires so much skill to play this piece and you made it sound so, well- musical! It made it even better to finally hear it on my own instrument, too. Brava!!!!!
Dude such a great piece to dream of playing it.thanks for always giving us viola peeps advice. I been practicing transcribing songs of late and your a great role model for a musician that is just out there doing his viola thing. Thanks viola king. Great job.
Thanks! Happy holidays! 🌞🎅🏻🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The OCTAVES… So wonderful and elegant!
Nicely done! Love those thirds.
Wow. Amazing job! I always thought of this piece as the “final boss” of sheet music.
That was amazing ❤ I really loved the harmonics part where it sounded like from another world. It's incredible how soft the viola can sound compared to the violin
Incredible.
Wow!! My favorite version
Grazie . Bravissimo !
Amazing!
Amazing!!!!, God job 👏👏👏
me encanta, eres una bestia, me llenas de inspiracion
Very nice! 👏👏👏👏
Brilliant
Really Wonderful. I love it all. Iam a VIolin Fan. Laura in uk
Bravo!
Lovely tone.
Well done !
Cara virei teu fan tu toca muito 👏🏽👏🏽
Nice!!! Wait, I’m a violist to and my name is James, lol. But great job!!!!!!!!! I mean you may of put a lot of effort into this, saw you on the livestream that you did if you practicing this. You are the VIOLA KING of youtube
The accents were amazing good job 👏
Bravo! I hope to make a viola to you in the future!
Es increíble
Very impressive! In your interpretation is seems to flow in such a way that it does not look virtuosic.
Somehow the viola gives it more of a somber touch
As a violist myself, this is awesome🔥🤯
❤ bravo ❤
Could do do Caprice no.5????? (It's going to be extremely difficult, good luck).
Very nice
YES! 🥺💐
"its not the instrument, its the player"
It changed from a minor to d minor elegantly😊
And also, who will win? Violin (❤) or Viola (🔵)
Someone tag twoset
All hail viola king!!!
1:34/1:35 a very prominent open C string that made it into the passage...same at 1:36/1:37. If there IS a note to be played on the C string in this transcription then it's a C# if anything else....
first also amazing job
Amazing performance! I wonder if there is a way to change or simplify Var 9. Left hand pizz doesn't speak as well on vla.
Damn!
Var 3 😍😍😍😍
It's a good idea to play in a more enclosed space so that the recording has echoes. As a result, it will sound more dramatic and less flat. By the way, this is pretty good. everything is natural
this is amazing! ngl i think it sounds better on viola…a lot more gentle almost
I like the lower register
I love how he is just playing such a hard piece with no emotion at all. (I’ve tried)
Where could i get the letters for viola??
Tripped up on the left hand pizz tho
Why did u play variation 3 one octave higher tho
Crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch.
Bro where did this guy learn to play chords my ears are bleeding
Viola sounds better than violin viola has a deep sweet tone plus it's still left of more open options to compose new music on it
Personally the viola does not have the same brightness I look for on the violin. Wonderful performance but not my preference. The last few variations did not have the bright powerful tone especially the chords
3:22 I didn't hear the very important bass note, and 3:24 was hard a bit hard to listen to also. You missed notes! I wonder if you knew that...?
P.S. There's no way a conductor could follow that if that's what you were going to play with no rehearsal or only one (if you played the version WITH an orchestra/accompaniment).
This is crunchfest all over the place. Are my ears broken?
Your royal highness, do you realise that you play the caprice out of tune? Maybe you majestically get some intonation?
Ok, it's not just me. Out of tune. Crunchy chords. Bad downbow technique. Barely any intonation for the left hand pizz. This is worse than a high school 3rd chair violin.
Oh god the shifts are so choppy. The high notes are all very very out of tune. The more I rewind the more I notice.
The upbow staccato 🤢🤮🤮🤮
@@TheGuyCalledX Jokes about violists have some grain of truth in them
@@MishaSkripach funny thing immediately after this video I found quite a few wonderful viola renditions. It seems it's just really hard to project the pizz variation when there's less tension in the string, but the octaves variation sounds really deep and rich when played well on viola. It's just this self-titled "viola king"...
I hate to sober you up, but Paganini is a bit above your pay grade, your Highness... You absolutely must go back to the drawing board, I'm afraid (Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, etc)... Also, invest in a metronome and use it, since your metro-rhythmic structure is al over the place. Incidenally, did you come up with the name of your channel yourself? Or was it your mother? Be honest, now! Either way, I feel embarrased for you, my King... Peace
Do you really think it’s a good idea to call yourself the viola “king?” (Especially after those chords 2:50-3:10😬) Hard to see a name like that and not conclude that you have a massive ego
Maybe, but the context is a series of reaction content to two set
This channel's name is inspired from Twosetviolin since that channel makes fun of violas a lot as a joke
Naaaaaa not for viola, sorry but is unlistenable..
Viola>Violin
Paganini is kinda unlistenable in general
@@burgundy.v I agree. I’m not a big Paganini fan. Over the top virtuosity.
