GLUTTONY. GREED. SLOTH. ENVY. WRATH. PRIDE. LUST. David Fincher's 1995 Serial De-lifer film, Se7en is filled with symbols and often overlooked details.
In the spirit of the Seven Deadly Sins, the teachings upon which the criminal antagonist John Doe based his crimes, I've narrowed down my own teachings for this episode to just 7 key things you (might have) missed. From the secret alphanumeric codes hidden in the film's opening title sequence, to the chess match where our protagonists, Detective Mills and Detective Somerset, engage in a psychological battle with John Doe, I'll be breaking down every significant detail, hidden secret and interesting character attribute in the movie. "What's in the box?!"
This will be the beginning of a David Fincher mini-marathon, where I cover each of his horror/thriller type movies. I'm not starting with Alien³, because I figure I'll do the entire Alien franchise at one point, and when I do, I'd like to do them together, in order.
    #Se7en #Seven #BradPitt
    About Se7en
Director David Fincher's dark, stylish thriller ranks as one of the decade's most influential box-office successes. The film concerns Det. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a homicide specialist just one week from a well-deserved retirement. Every minute of his 32 years on the job is evident in Somerset's worn, exhausted face, and his soul aches with the pain that can only come from having seen and felt far too much. But Somerset's retirement must wait for one last case, for which he is teamed with young hotshot David Mills (Brad Pitt), the fiery detective set to replace him at the end of the week.
    About Things You Missed
These videos point out some of the little details you may have missed in your favorite horror franchises as I analyse their meaning and why they are noteworthy. I'll breakdown every small detail, easter egg, reference, connection, motif, cameo, callback and homage that I can find! Typically, I'll cover Things You Missed in horror movies, and Things You Missed in horror film trailers.

I like how it was raining the entire time Mills and Somerset were conducting their investigation, but during the scene where John Doe turned himself in, the sun came out. When John Doe's plan was revealed in the desert, the weather became clear and sunny.

Fun fact. The movie was filmed in LA where it basically doesn't rain. But one of their first days filming, if not their very first day, there was a heavy downpour and fincher liked it and wanted strict continuity throughout the movie so they added rain artificially for the rest of the movie.

    • @skaarup33
      @skaarup33 4 года назад +6

@@amogussy_did_9.11 I don't think so, it's not the movie that's covering the 7 deadly sins. It a movie about a psychotic serial killer who trying to force society to see what society and the people who live with in have become and they indulge themselves in. And those who indulge in the deadly sins are bound for hell.

A small correction: John Doe himself is 'Envy' for envying normal lives, and Mills is 'Wrath' - he doesn't actually die but he kills all his values and good nature when he gives in to his rage and kills Doe.

@@moizyguy6714 Idk, she's innocent as far as I can tell, but she has to be one of the sins if he killed her. I think Mills messed up his original plans when they found his house, so he had to come up with something else. The wife is either Pride or Envy. John Doe is the other. I can see him being either one. He gloats about how they will study his killings for years to come, yet he's jealous of the life Mills has. Idk what the wife could be. I can see her being proud of Mills, proud she's about to be a mother, but perhaps she's not happy with her living conditions and how hectic her life seems to be so maybe she envies other people's lives. I wonder if there's deleted scenes with her, because the ending has always felt rushed and incomplete to me.

    (please notice this)
While rewatching this film and I noticed something! Right before John doe turns himself in, as Mills walks by the front desk, the woman there tells him that his wife had called and left a note that morning. This means that probably, as John doe was in their apartment about to kill her, he forced her to give her husband one final call.
This makes me think that IF ONLY Mills was in the office and had taken the call, he might have been able to save Tracy!
It's so frustrating, that and that we never got to know what she said in that note. She was most likely being threatened with a gun so she tried to sound calm but would've definitely dropped a hint or two, yet the front desk lady did not understand! (Once again, se7en shows us apathy in the works)
That's why this is such a brilliant movie, it leaves you with a lot to guess about, so many awful things.

Hi CZ. Love your videos man, keep it up. Just had an idea. During the last scene, a couple of John Doe's lines stood out to me; "I wish I could've lived like you", "I tried to taste the life of a simple man" and, "Because I envy your normal life, it seems that envy is my sin". So this looks to me like John saw himself as the 'Envy' body and made Detective Mills 'Wrath' (using Mill's wife as a tool to get him into this state) instead of Mill's wife as 'Envy' and John as 'Wrath'.

Surely Doe was the 6th victim ‘envy’…he even admitted it himself.
Mills became Wrath and destroyed his own life for vengeance thus becoming the 7th victim.

Doe felt the envy, she was the victim of it. If Doe was envy, who would be wrath?
Each murder “represents” a deadly sin. Doe is merely the “cause” of all of them except one.

@@michaelmcdonald8452 Doe was envy, he killed Mills' wife and child because he was envious of Mills' life. Mills was wrath, because he killed Doe in a fit of rage after he found out what Doe had done.
Each of Doe's murders was meant to punish what he saw was a personification of one of the seven deadly sins. The fat man was gluttony because he ate more than he needed to, the lawyer was greed because he cared more about money than justice, the drug dealer was sloth because he encouraged people to waste away their lives in drug trips, the prostitute catered to her clients' lusts, and the model was prideful of her appearance. Each of them was punished because of their sin. Doe felt envious of Mills, and he was punished with death. Mills was wrath, and he was punished by going from a police officer, to a criminal.

Will The Angry Dudeist the only difference in what you’re saying and what he’s saying is whether the victim represents the sin or their executioner.
For the first five, there was a body associated with each sin so in that language, it makes sense that she and Doe would be 6 and 7.
I’d say this is kind of splitting hairs but I understand the distinction you’re making.

2:33 as opposed to a “Batman Gambit”, where you concoct a plan that completely depends on the predictability of a player or target.
For example: in the film SUPERMAN II, Superman conducts a Batman Gambit on the prediction that Lex Luthor would betray him to the Kryptonian villains. The plan works because Luthor did exactly what Superman assumes.

My kid's chess coach gave us a speech after a Sunday tournament. "Today is Sunday, and all over America today, there will be football commentators proclaiming that football is like a game of chess. But nowhere ever did anyone say that chess is like a game of football. Therefore chess is superior to football."

Things YOU missed, besides the Envy part that a lot of people already stated. Chess also has a timer (but your point still stands). Jon Doe did not go back to document his victim and slopily run into the investigation, he went to gather intell on the investigating detectives in the guise of a newspaper photographer, (get photos and test their reactions) in order to help plan his next steps. It's not Ironic that he is called Jon Doe and that is what they call unkowns, he is called Jon Doe because he is unknown, period.
