    On every re-watch, this episode feels really great to me. But as the season opener and viewing it for the first time, a LOT has changed for Team Coulson, and the unfamiliarity can be really uncomfortable for the viewer. It's a really bold move for the writers, showing how confident they are in what they are doing and where they are going.

    Isabelle Hartley was played by actress Lucy Lawless, who is very well known (especially among the demographic Agents of Shield was going for) as playing Xena: Warrior Princess.
    When Hartley made her appearance, a lot of people recognized her and immediately liked her, so her death did hit them harder than a one off character should have. That is why lots of people were affected by her death.

    I don’t blame you for being quiet in this episode- there’s a lot to process since the s1 finale! Honestly one of the best season introductions imo, but in future seasons AOS is really good at that anyway. Probably my favorites in that regard are the s4 and s5 first episodes.

    Loved this episode for so many reasons!
    1. Quality - you can see and feel the increase in production quality. Everything looks so much cleaner and more professional!
    2. Story - it built on the pre-existing lore established (084's, Agent Carter, etc.) without diminishing them, and ties it to the present.
    3. Guest stars! Peggy Carter, Hartley, Creel and even Talbot are all faves of mine and I was thrilled to see them in the MCU(ish)!
    4. Character development - we got to see the characters we loved develop from season one. It wasnt taking the characters in huge leaps from where they left off, which if done and unseen would have left a bad taste. But we got to see the characters develop from where they left off and not remain stagnant (mainly Skyes training with May).
    I could go on and on about how much I love about this episode! Great reaction and I know everyones taste is different but I really enjoyed this and I'm sorry it wasnt your cup of tea...

      So glad you enjoyed the reaction and I appreciate that you were still able to enjoy it even though it wasn't my favorite episode. One of the hard things about writing, or portraying on screen, a mystery is that the writer knows the answer, but has to present it to the viewer who is in the dark. And the writer has to remember which character is in the dark about what, and what the audience does or doesn't know, or what the audience doesn't realize they (we?) have to pick up on. Which means that too much information is sometimes being dumped on us at the first watch, and we have to watch it again with the hindsight of knowing the answer to get all the pleasure.
    Balancing all that properly, and satisfactorily, so the audience enjoys it both on the original run and as a rerun, is a mad skill. Sometimes it's done really, really well, and more often less so. _S.H.I.E.L.D._ is on the "more" side, but there are still those episodes that come off a bit raw for a first time watcher, or for someone who is less knowledgeable about the "lore" behind the show, all the comics and movies and stuff.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  3 месяца назад +1

      I stay current with the movies in relation to AOS, but I don't know anything about the comics, really. Even on a rewatch and being in season 4 now over on Patreon, I still pretty much agree with my initial thoughts on this one. It's a perfectly fine episode, but not a strong season opener for me.
      There have been some pretty major misses when it comes to the writing on this show (that are yet to come here on YT), but I do think they do more often than not get it right.

    • @menachemsalomon
      @menachemsalomon 3 месяца назад +1

      @@BritanyBinges That's a very reasonable opinion, on both points. I was confused my first time through, too, and I still think the discontinuity -- all the new characters, the new setting, setup, and sets, etc. -- is a bit jarring.
      My point was the balancing, and how hard it is. So, yeah, they slipped with this one for you, but for comic fans, it may not have been as much of a slip. Or they just slipped, and it's still well good enough to keep you watching.

    The Simmons reveal absolutely broke me on first watch 😭😭😭 Iain's acting is top-notch tho. It's a lot of change, but it never really bothered me, probably because I had to wait four months for it and was keeping up with all the casting news and such. And as you've probably noticed by now, AOS tends to reinvent itself every season, and it all started with this one. It was pretty shocking that they killed off Isabelle Hartley so early considering they got Lucy Lawless to play her, glad they at least got her back for flashbacks. Hunter, my beloved ❤

    If I can make a small suggestion, don't say every guess you have outloud! Even though you made the guess about Simmons not being there correctly, it still makes it more entertaining for us. I can't speak for everyone of course, but know I'm not alone. One thing I can't stand with some reactors is they'll keep making guesses during the show and it just devolves into them not bringing it up if they guessed wrong, or constantly patting themselves on the back if they're right.
    Imagine you took a friend out to see your favorite movie for the first time and they guess some major twist at the end before it happened. It'd be a bummer, wouldn't it?
    Of course, you do you, just one person's opinion!
    Also, one little thing, Simmons is dressed the way she was in F.Z.Z.T. ... Apparently said Fitz imagines her that way because that was the moment he became aware he loved her.

      And to be clear, this reactor would regularly pause the video during the initial watch and expound for awhile. Doesn't happen here so it's not as big of a deal for me anyway.

      Personally, I absolutely love hearing reactors' guesses as they go because it gets me even more excited to see their reaction whenever they find out they're right/wrong. However, I won't watch videos from reactors who frequently pause the show or movie to share a whole theory (or story, or anything, really) or where they change their guess every 30 seconds. So, I do get the frustration there.
