  • In this video we are going to etch some glass using sodium fluoride and hydrochloric acid. As hydrofluoric acid is dangerous you should not try this at home.

    Hf is surprisingly tame as far as acids go with the exception of eating glass. Most metals form a passivation layer and reaction ceases. The main issue is getting it on you. It does not give a warning till it soaks in then it's too late. 😵

    IIRC ammonium bifluoride also works and all you need is water, no other acids required. Cody's Lab did a video a while back (like 6+ years) using the stuff to etch jars.

    I was kinda expecting more. I work with HF in my lab and we had a incident where we used to have a dedicated synth vial for quenching our needles that we filled with bicarb. We learned pretty quick to not re-use them with HF because we pulled out glass chunks from it one day lol. Surprised the direct HF bath didn't eat the glass more.

    If you are insane enough, could you distill the HF to get azeotropic HF which should be around 40%? This would of course require using stochiometric amounts of HCl with maybe some excess NaF so that all HCl is consumed and only HF is destilled.

      i´d need a distillation apparatus made from resistant plastic for this lol. Also i´m getting HF soon anyways so it´s unlikely that i am going to distill any

      I think it's possible with a bent copper pipe that's sealed at one end, charge your reactants in the sealed end and have the open end of pipe leading into water. Heat the reactants and hf will flow and disolve into the water. You can probably get to your 40% that way before the hf stops disolving.
      Or as thy mentioned use plastic distillation set made of ptfe or similar.
      It's very dangerous

      Distilling HF, what could go wrong? 💀

      Concentrated H2SO4 plus CaF2 in stpichiometric ratios wil make HF. React in a ptfe or HDPE container. Then add water and distill in a carbon steel apperatus. The HF will passivate the iron and prevent further attack. 🤓

      @@christopherleubner6633 same goes with copper forming a copper fluoride passivation layer. Even fluorine can be okay with passivated copper though maybe nickel is better and stainless steel if it's a pressure vessel. I wonder if there are suitable transparent fluoride crystals that could store liquid fluorine samples under pressure or as gas 🤔

    Does anyone know a small metal artisan who works with HF. I have some antique sterling flatware that has old worn colored epoxy resins that needs to be removed and HF would do it in a jiff but it is too dangerous for an armature like myself.

      yes on my main channel thy labs but the nicotine made this way shouldn´t be used for vapes and pure nicotine is also very very toxic and should thus not be handled by someone who is not a trained professional

    • @thyzoidside
      @thyzoidside  Год назад +2

      @@bishalscreation it is firstly highly toxic and not everybody knows how to properly dilute/handle it but before vaping it you would have to confirm the purity via lab equipment which costs a fortune (NMR, GC or HPLC)
