Van Tour | 1969 VW Bus Tiny House on Wheels

- Three months ago my husband Murphy and I left behind our traditional home to live and travel full time in our 1969 VW Bus. This is the second VW bus that we owned, but the first we've had restored and converted to a tiny house on wheels.
When we were going through the conversion and restoration (done by VDub Classics in CA), it was hard to envision how to best design and set up the interior to make sure it was usable, and had enough storage and still felt somewhat spacious. I did my best to make a quick video to show how we chose to set up our bus, and what works best for us. Hopefully this helps any aspiring buslifers out there.
This is my first time shooting and editing video, so be prepared for beginner level quality. But I promise to keep practicing if you keep watching.

Had this in 1970, wife and four children. We traveled coast to coast and never stopped at restaurants or motels. Rigged up a portable shower that used the sun to heat the water. Had to stop every three days at laundrymats to clean clothes. Took 4 weeks. My children still laugh and talk about our adventure. Took lots of movie pictures with a little cheap camera. We still look at them and get the laughs all over again. to old to do that again. I envy this young lady.

My Dad and I are currently working on our VW Campervan. We have a 1972 (T2) Westfalia and I love it! Yours is beautiful and a lot less rusty. 😂
wow I LOVE this bus. I cant afford a VW ,have always loved them and wanted one but they go for crazy prices these days, instead I bought a full sized camper van with a high top for $1500 ,was basically empty inside except it had all the wiring and insulation and paneling in good shape so I just built a nice big bed in back and a kitchen kind of like you have here, put solar on the roof and have enjoyed it VERY much for the past 5 years, think my total investment was like $3500 including new tires and the build out. def looks like crap compared to this beauty but It is still such a fun thing to be able to hop in the van and go anywhere and be pretty comfy.

Mine is a VW Bus 1969 Type2 with a sliding sunroof. I am restoring it myself. DH did the engine already. Its a lot of work.

BEAUTIFUL bus btw : thís one is a pre-facelift and is therefore called a low light because the front indicators are below the main head lights. After the T2 or Bay Window was face-lifted, the front indicators were placed above the head lights.

We recently bought our 76 Westfalia bus! Planning on living in our van as well! In the middle of restoring it right now but very excited. If you have any advice or tips, please let us know! Beautiful home!
Thanks so much for watching! My number one tip would be insulation. We didn’t install any insulation in our bus when we restored it and it’s very very cold this time of year! I’ve seen other bus restores where they put insulation behind the door panels. I’d also recommend light colors on the inside...makes it feel more open and airy. Good luck!

I found the same bus abandoned near in my workplace and planning to check if I can buy it and maybe restore it and change it to a tiny house... I just want to check how much would it cost to restore one?
It varies a lot based on the condition of the bus and how much restoration you are looking to do to it. There are some good forums on thesamba.com on this topic that might be worth checking out. Good luck!!
Are you handy ? Have tools ? And a place to work on it ? Great. If not, be smart like Rebecca here...and buy it done.... Rebuilt air cooled (1600) Engines are 3K and type IV are at least 3500 and more...one of these channels a guy had a CB Performance engine, that engine is 10K. Just the engine. Transmissions 1-2.5K, interiors 500-2500 for stock...but paint will be 5K or more -- rust work is 30-100 an hour depending on your area...it adds up super fast... Good Luck !
@Gareth Lloyd so true, my 71 back in 09 cost me 2500 (??), came from CA, to Portland to Chicago , original paint bus, only rust was battery tray, what a joy when you twist a bolt and it comes out like it was put here only a few months ago...June of 71 it was made...

Just come across this after watching other Kombi vids. I have an almost identical 69 VW Bus.
You say about condensation, those heaters you use generate loads of moisture as it's a 'wet heat'. I've opted to fit a Diesel Heater, keeps the bus much drier. Works great and you can use it on the move!
People won't tell you how much they paid for their camper, as they don't want to be criticised for spending such huge sum. But they love to boast and invite envy by showing off their rig. These bus' are not cheap. This one looks to be very clean and professionally upgraded.

Can't stand those stupid hand pumps....how can you wash your hands? Love the hanging wardrobe which I would be using 4 that purpose. Happy Travels 😊.
