I feel the same way. I will to close friends or to others who have it. But people who don't have it, don't fully understand what it's all about. And I'm afraid they will either de friend me or they will make it seem like it's nothing. And make me feel 2" tall.

I have OCD. I was diagnosed in the early 90's, although I've had it my entire life. I'm so thankful that they know much more about it now, then when I was younger. I had a very difficult time with it in school. I'm my late 40's, now.
I know that we don't personally know each other, however, I must say, that I am so, very proud of you for having the courage to make this video!
You've shared things that I have also, felt. I'm very sorry that you've had to deal with the stigma, and the ignorance of other people. We definitely need to bring more awareness to this legitimate disorder. You've given me several ideas, and I wanted to thank you for that. One thing I've noticed, was how in the early 2000's, especially, it seemed as though in the entertainment industry, people would come out as saying they had OCD, and maybe they did, but it almost seemed to me to be like a bandwagon. Where it seemed cool to say, yeah I have OCD. I agree with you. People use it in the wrong context. It is neither fun, nor cool, to have it!
In fact, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. As I said, I've lived with it a very long time. If you ever want to talk about it, I'm here for you. You did an amazing job in your video. I really appreciate your bringing awareness to OCD. Thank you!

Thank you for pointing out that this is not just a first world problem. One of my obsessive/intrusive thoughts is often that this is all in my head and I am making up my disorder for attention and I should stop being so selfish and think of others. A lot of these thoughts stem from people who say things like that and minimize this disorder. I wish people could understand the harm they do when they say something like that without thinking. One comment like that can set my mind on that thought for a week or more. Thank you for being brave and standing up for this misunderstood disorder. Also your video was very funny and I enjoyed it a lot. :) Sorry for the long comment.

Hannah! You are spunky and endearing. Your personality engages the viewer to keep watching and to see what you're going to do next.
You strike a great balance between being raw and educating society while incorporating humour throughout. I love the character's titles, especially
    "The OCD enthusiast."
And oh gosh my favourite example is this part: "I am so diabetes about breakfast"
People need to watch this to learn more and to reflect on whether they are contributing to OCD's bad rap. Plus they'll get to enjoy all the quirks that make this video extra special.

I know this video is about 9 months old, but thank you for posting it. You had some awesome points there.
When I was trying to tell my (at the time) BFF that I had OCD her response was "you don't look like someone who has it". And I was also thinking to myself what an OCD person looks like. Finally I think she finally realized I do have it cause I cleaned her house the exact same way she would when I babysat for her two boys (she has it). My room is also not 100% tidy. But that doesn't mean I don't have it.
I have been diagnosed with it many years back by a trained therapist. And a friend of mine who is studying therapy also has mentioned that she noticed my OCD at work.
What people really need to learn is that everyone is different. So OCD effects everyone differently. We don't all have the same results with it. No one can tell who has it and who doesn't. It just ain't that easy y'all. Funny you should mention diabetes. Cause I have that as well.

      So, very true!
Everyone does not exhibit with the same symptoms! I wish, that there were more awareness about this.

We need more advocates out there bringing awareness the rights of others.

As I stated, I've had OCD my entire life. I am also, a Christian. I believe in prayer, but I also believe, that God wants us to help ourselves. God gave everyone talents. That's why we have doctors, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists. Prayer, and positivity are great things, and they work very well alongside medicines that these types of physicians prescribe. OCD, is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Just as one would take say, metformin, for diabetes, someone with OCD, may take an SSRI, for their chemical imbalance. God is loving, and I feel that God places those physicians here for people to acquire help. There is nothing wrong with seeking help!
The smartest people in this world got that way, by not being afraid to ask the most difficult questions.
Ummmm, I sure hope that my statement made sense. It did in my head. Lol!
In response, I pray that the person who said that to you, develops more understanding. I wish you the very best.

I also use diabetes as an example like you did because since people know diabetes is so serious, they hopefully start thinking that mental disorders are just as serious. Saying "I like my desk clean, I'm so OCD!" is the same thing as saying "I have low blood sugar, I'm so diabetes!" It's ridiculous! OCD is a serious disorder and you give that message in a great way.

I have recently been diagnosed with OCD and have been struggling with depression and anxiety for over 20 years. It was getting quite scary, urges are getting in the way of my life, I have been having problems with people at work, many people think it is funny to put rubbish on my desk, re-arranging my desk and write obscenities on my work equipment, they have made me feel suicidal, anxious and paranoid, many people I work with don't understand mental illness and I'm having a hard time explaining it. I will be starting therapy next week and I have been on medication for the last 3 weeks. I started searching RUclips to understand this condition so I can cope, I was stunned to find out just how long I have been dealing with this without it being diagnosed, after watching this video and others and knowing that I'm not alone gave me a great sense of hope, this is the best I've felt for a long time, thank you so much.x

Life gets so much better after diagnosis. Putting a name to the isolating torture you've been experiencing is the ultimate validation. I'm so happy that you are finding hope in treatment and in the OCD community. I'm sorry you have struggled for so long alone. Know that you won't ever have to go back there again - it's not always going to be easy, but it will never be like it was. Also, your coworkers sound like straight up a-holes! I'm sorry you have to deal with that kind of bullying on top of your OCD and anxiety - I went through major ridicule when I started college and it really broke my spirits, I ended up transferring schools. WIshing you the best on your journey. You got this.

Even pyschatrists are poorly trained on this. "You don't have OCD you have to have compulsions." *doesn't even ask me if I have compulsions or obsessive thoughts, just dismisses me the second I say it* my therapists thinks I have OCD though. I use to think I was past it cause I would wash my hands constantly as a child and I thought that's the only thing OCD was. Then my therapist suggested I could have it and did so more digging up on it. I ruminate and have repetitive thoughts and constantly seek reassurance and lose sleep over ruminating. Not sure how that's not OCD. Not getting help is killing me though.

I've lived with pure OCD since age 10. I used to be under the impression that OCD's symptoms only had to do with wanting to keep things clean and organized, meanwhile wondering, "Why do I have all these horrid thoughts running through my head all the time?" It resulted in stronger facial tics at age 19.

OCD comes in all forms, a lot of the most common forms are never what you represented in mainstream media, which is a shame. Although I deal with contamination issues which I suppose are "stereotypical", I also deal with intrusive and obsessive thoughts that do not include rituals.. still trying to find a way that I can present that to the world.

Or "you're not OCD. Your handwriting's not that neat and you're bed rooms untidy," whilst my main thoughts are when is the next time and bleach and scald my hands? OCD is truly debilitating. The way it's portrayed as an adjective to describe a preference to being neat is so pathetic and ignorant.

I have severe OCD to which I had to stop continuing my studies because most of my rituals consumed most of My time and I couldn't catch up with my class work! I am now at home dealing with OCD/depression trying to find a way out, I am constantly crying and sometimes just want to commit suicide but I am trying to beat it. It's so difficult to deal with everyday, I get intrusive thoughts that bother me so much I start screaming and crying my eyes out.

CallmeHass I believe in you and I am happy that you are trying. My rituals ruined me too. I used to wash my hands compulsively until they bled...keep breathing, keep waking up. Try to envision a positive future even though it's torture and pain now. Keep going!!!

I don't tell anyone about it, because they either don't believe it, think I just want attention, or don't understand what it is. I'll try to explain, and they just disagree and yell that they're right and I'm wrong. They don't understand and I want people to know why I do weird stuff sometimes. And they think it's just being neat or being a perfectionist. I wish I could show this to everyone in the world.

Finally i have found someone who understands. Literally I hate it when people say this shit, when people say "haha....sorry it's just my OCD..." OH SHUT THE FUCK UP! It's like me crying at a film and saying "oh I'm sorry it's just my depression". So before people who don't have OCD or who just dismiss obsessive compulsive disorder, please think about what your saying because what you are saying is sooooooo wrong.

+Morgan Lynn i know what your saying but i was talking about the everyday people who might randomly moan about not having their books neatly placed on a shelf and then saying "oh..... Hahah its my OCD' thats what makes me angry, people saying the phrase as a describing word, because it isn't a describing word, its a mental illness.

I'm not sure if I have ocd, but, these things are what have me wondering:
If I do something once, I have to do it twice. For example, If I accidentally tap the wall with the index finger on my right hand I have to touch the wall with all my fingers then repeat, I would then do it with my left hand. After I would go to every wall in the room I am in and tap the wall twice with all of my fingers.
If I take one chip, I have to take another, then two more for my other hand.
If I use one pump of lotion I have to do it again then twice with my other hand.
I hate the color red, I'm not even sure why. It stands and it makes me angry.
I have to look both ways before crossing the street, four times looking left then four times looking right.
I can't step on cracks or those little lines on a side walk, if I do I have to go back eight steps and try again.
Before I open the fridge I have to tap on it four times with each hand, then eight with each foot.
When I misspell something, I have to erase it or backspace and start over, I can't use auto correct.
Before I open a door I have to turn it four times left then four times right.
I have to proof read everything I write and fix atleast two things, but I think that's just something I will always do.
If I am asked to stop reading, I have to read until the lines of the paragaph are an even number until I stop.
I have to put my left foot into my shoe first, then my right.
Those are some of the thing's I do, judging by, do I have ocd? Or is it something else?

When people ask me why I do the things I do I tell them I have OCD they say I'm lying and doing it for attention. I'm 14 and I don't know the age people get it but I hate it. I have to spin around when I walk a certain way and I have to check things, open and close doors, and turn on and off lights MULTIPLE TIMES!! And when somebody touches me I have to touch them again so it's an even number but it's so embarrassing. OCD sucks because I realize I'm doing it and I can't stop

    • @ginalombardo1813
      @ginalombardo1813 6 лет назад +1

It's okay MIchelle. You get in a loop , I get those too. As you get older you will develop coping mechanisms, that will help. For example sometimes I get into a checking things loop and of course self doubt comes in, so I take pictures with my phone of the things I check. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes I have to count to a certain number and I would make up and end word. You will learn to cope with it. It must be overwhelming at 14.

I am 14 and I'm thinking I'm showing signs of ocd. My grandma & my mother also have ocd but I don't want to overreact and try and label myself. I do have repeated ritualistic behaviors that I do to relieve irrational anxieties I form. I try to stop but then I will become fixated and I can only relive the anxiety by performing the act, it is very hard to stop myself. However, it isn't exactly hindering my life, in a major way at least. I don't want to make a big deal out of something I might just be overreacting to, but I also fear that with time it could get worse. For example:
Every night I must check every faucet in the bathroom even if I know they aren't running, I don't know why if I try to resist it gets stronger. Tonight I checked 3 times.
I can't let myself sleep without going through my nighttime routine, most consisting of making sure all my stuff is in its place. My room is not necessarily tidy but I have to have it organized in a certain way. I check all the faucets and I check my wardrobe in case something is hiding in there. I don't really believe that there is something hiding in there, at 14 its a bit ridiculous for me to think that. Its just the anxiety consumes me.
When I was younger I used to have a hand washing ritual where every time I washed my hands I HAD to use 3 pumps of soap and lather 15 times or else I had to start again but I've gotten that under control now
I am constantly haunted by the obsessive thought I might kill someone in a violent outburst. I have never had a violent outburst, I'm not a violent person but the anxiety still persists
When my bed is made I have 2 pillows 4 small cushions and 3 plush toys. At the end of my bed I have two blankets folded on top of each other. I have to have these on my bed in the correct way. It angers me a lot to see my bed get messed up or for the things to be in the wrong order.
These are some I counted off the top of my head. I've tried my best on my own but now I'm not sure what to do and I don't want to burden my family.

I’m being treated for OCD, and fortunately haven’t been offended by many comments from people... mostly because no one’s talking about OCD, in any serious sense of the term.
and also it’s not something I identify myself to others by, since it’s not visible thing.
so pretty much only family and girlfriend are aware.

    • @ginalombardo1813

That's sad. I'm a 56 year old woman that has had it for 30 years and it really doesn't ever go away. It may get a little better and then worse but it's always there. Tell your dad, compassion goes along way. I bet when you get anxious your OCD is worse, so his statements aren't helping. I would never do that to my child.
