I followed this three-video series to do my own large format tile kitchen countertop. Lessons learned:
    1. Plywood thicknesses measure less than stated. For this reason, carefully measure the sheets to ensure you really do end up with 1 3/8" thickness.
    2. The videos ignores thinset thickness. Schluter implies that 1/4" profiles are for 1/4" tile... well, yes, if no thinset is used.
    3. Schluter specifies unmodified thinset, but since making these videos, they now make a modified thinset ("All Set") that claims to work as well.
    Side notes:
It was a very expensive project, even doing it myself: $200 on plywood, $300 on tile, and get this, $1,100 for the Schluter profiles plus bits, and another $120 for the Ditra. It was hard not to wonder if simply using tile with bullnose pieces would have been wiser...
It was interesting to see during demolition what the home builders originally did for the countertop. Over wood, they put down tar paper, then 1" of good old cement, then tile. Incredibly cheap and it lasted 40 years just fine. I have a new appreciation of cost containment!

So you would advise the tar method?

I think the 1" cement could be replaced by cement boards then apply raincoat. That will be my approach on my next project.

Is there a consideration for a 1/4" expansion gap along the back wall? or all around, im not using profiles, using oak 1X3 along the front. So the Ditra should or should not come in contact with the wood in front or the wall in back?

      Hi Phillip,
In the tile industry, it is generally not recommended to use wood for the face of the countertop due to expansion and contraction, as well as keeping the wood waterproof in front of the sink, even with multiple layers of waterproofing. If the wood does get wet and expand, the grout could crack, allowing extra water into the assembly which could possibly cause more issues. Tile and/or profiles are the more stable choice.
However, if you would still like to use wood, we would recommend a 1/8" movement zone between the wood and the wall. Thin-set is fine to use to install the KERDI-BAND over the DITRA/gap/wall connection, but a sealant, colored caulk or DILEX-EKE or BWA should be used between the tile and the wall. The DILEX-BWA or a 1/8" gap filled with a sealant or colored caulk should be used between the wood and the DITRA and tile.
We also recommending consulting with the sealant or caulking manufacturer to make sure they approve of the application.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to call us if you have any more questions!

Thank you so much someone told me I can not use tiles on plywood! But I found your video very helpful and informative.

Hi Barbie, thanks so much for that! Just to be clear, this video is only on the installation of tile on a counter top. Installing tile in a wet application like a shower would have a different set of requirements.

I see that this is 10 years old but I'm pretty sure your supposed to use schluter kerdi board 24x92 at 1.5" thick for counter tops. It attach with kerdi fix directly to the cabinets. No ply wood at all.

@@charlescaston2404 Exactly. It's easy to say what "should" be used, but it doesn't matter if you can't find it anywhere. I went with plywood and got on with things. Had I waited on the Kerdi board (which is much more expensive than plywood), I'd still be waiting, what with the supply chain issues.
