    For the last 2 years i have been using 85mm lens, now i started using the same 50mm f1.4 and it is great. Wished i used it sooner. My travel lens along with 24-105 for events. But 50mm f1.4 is just pure heaven! Light and great bokeh!

    I like the 100mm F/2. Also not an L series. I like the 100 because I don't like being too close to people. I'll step back and use the 135 F/2L as well. I keep the 24-70 2.8 ii on there 99% of the time though. I don't like to blowout the background as much as I used to either. I also do video and I used to blow the background out way too much. In video I'd have people walking in and out of focus. I'll set a full frame camera on F/7 now. Background is still fairly blown out if you're close to the person.

    Hey Jessica, really enjoyed your thoughts on the 1.4. Wonderful photos you took, as well.
    I just wanted to leave my two cents on the 1.8 lens; I am not sure if Canon re-constructed the build of the lens, or if other people are more harsh on their reviews of the product (although I seldom meet anyone who is as critical as myself), but I have been using the 1.8 for a few months now (hoping to upgrade to the 1.4 soon), and my initial impression was that the build quality is excellent for how small the lens is.
    It doesn't feel cheap and plastic-y like my kit lens, it has a fair amount of weight to it, and the picture quality is rather good. My only real complaint about it is the annoying amount of time it takes to focus, which is why I want to upgrade to the 1.4, as I have heard it performs much better in terms of speed. So I just kind of want to put it out there that the 1.8 is still a great lens, especially for someone on a tight budget, and that I don't think it would break very easily. I think it would have to be dropped a few times to suffer any damage.
    Anyway, again I really enjoyed the video, first video on your channel that I have watched, and I am happy to be a new subscriber.

    Good review. The motor was bad for my 1.4 and eventually I gave it up. But I really miss the 50's color and everything and now I am getting a new one, with the hood on. I read somewhere the hood was important as the aluminum lens frame could deform and make the motor break down.

    That's definitely one of my favorite lenses. It's affordable and you can get amazing shots out of it! I don't see any problems with sharpness if you shoot outdoor and it's way easier then the 1.2 to replace it in case something happens. It's a very good investment.

    I don't have a 1.2 and never really wanted one. They have very limited use a ff camera due to the distortion and shallow depth of field. I have have the Sigma Art 1.4 which I would put up against almost any lens for sharpness and as all Sigmas built like a tank. My favourite two lenses are my Tamron 25-70 (unfortunately I can't recommend because of some very reliable re views around some duds, I think I struck very lucky) and both my 70-200, I use the 2.8 IS in the studio but more often I have the f4 on one of my cameras due to its weight and size. There is no right and wrong with lenses, just preferences and thankfully photographers tend to be an individual bunch and it's unlikely you will get two with the same preferences. I think with your view of the world you'd make an amazing travel photographer. Try taking a few more photos of the things you see, but take them as you see them not as everyone else does. If you can photograph people successfully you can definitely shoot 'things'

    Heyy Jess. I love your work so much. Your comparison between the 1.2 l and the 1.4 is great deal of help for beginners like me. I just had a question which you said at the end of the video about the 1.8 Lens. I have been using 1.8 lens on a canon entry level camera and I feel that the focusing is great at a pretty cheap price but I am really interested in the 1.4 lens as I ll be upgrading my camera body to a 80D. So my real question is that should I buy the 1.4 lens because I am getting great results from 1.8?
    Also lots of love from India ❤️

    • @NEMANJAFF5
      @NEMANJAFF5 8 лет назад +1

      30mm is too wide for portraits, 50 is a minimum. I don't know why she uses 50 so much, 85mm or 70-200mm are much better focal lengths.
      Also if u're doing portraits, with 30mm you have to be in people's face, literally.

    • @EdgarsDrusts
      @EdgarsDrusts 8 лет назад +6

      50mm is not really a minimum. You can get pretty good portraits with minimal distortion with a 35mm. 50mm is super good, because you can shoot almost anywhere. 85mm is sometimes too close indoors etc., but nevertheless 85mm is the best focal length for fashion. 70-200 makes the background juicy af, but it has limitations as well. 50mm is just more versatile, but obviously anyone would use a 85 or 70-200 if it wasn't limited to open spaces or super close portraits in tight spaces.

    Hello Jess, you said you like to shoot at f/2.8, So how is the new Canon 1.8 STM lens ?? Its build quality and STM lens is a grt upgrade to the old niftfifty.
    I also saw videos where the photographers said shooting at f/1.4 also causes softness in the photos.
    So if i would be shooting at f/1.8, which lens would be better, Canon 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8 ??

    • @brandonj8018

    Would it be worth upgrading from the 1.8?

      Bought both and returned 1.4 because 1.8 is noticeably sharper.

    Yow. Thanks for sharing your go to. I'm a total noob at this stuff but would this lens also do well in video? Shout out from Leb.

    How are you guys doing? I am going to get 35mm lens but I am so confused between choosing Sigma 35 art, which had a percent of defect concerning focus and a Tamron SP 35mm, which has VC. What do you think about these two lenses?
